BEDFORD — Taylor County Sheriff’s Deputy Tyler Couch tosses a pen into an open grassy area. He grips the leather lead in his hand, at the end of which is a Slovakian shepherd drooling with excitement. Couch yells a command in Czech and releases the lead and the dog jets off into the grass, nose down and feet clipping along. Suddenly, the dog turns to face Couch and, in his excitement of finding the pen, only lies down part of the way. Couch yells another command and the shepherd comes to his side, awaiting his prize of a rubber toy being flung for him to fetch. Couch is the handler of the latest addition to Taylor County Sheriff’s Office, a Slovakian shepherd named Ciba, who can smell various narcotics and sniff out evidence and people. “He’s just an added tool to give us access to vehicles and places we may not otherwise get access to,” said

The duo primarily work the night shift, so when it’s time to work, Ciba is ready. “I do a lot of patrol stuff.
