Shown above is a bar graph indicating the age of construction of available housing stock within Creston city limits. Nearly 60 percent of the current housing stock was built prior to 1960 or is at least 60 years old.

As the local area continues to see historically low unemployment rates, area demand for labor and housing continues to increase. “Our employers are having trouble finding enough workforce to fulfill available jobs in the area,” said Wayne Pantini, Union County Development Association (UCDA) executive director. “ A n d we’re not Pantini alone in that — this is a statewide issue. “And our manufacturers,” said Pantini, “our hospital, the college, the school

district — those are all our major employers and our focus areas. And they need workers. But that workforce need is still prevalent in the other service and retail industries as well. And if that need is not fulfilled, it’s hard for them (the businesses) to grow and expand and make additional investments.” Pantini stresses both a high demand for housing, and a need for more diverse workforce education as challenges the county faces in continuing to grow.

Housing Per the recently completed July 2017 Creston Housing Study, 1,579 units of Creston’s 3,671 units of available housing stock were built in or before the year 1939. What’s more, Creston has the lowest medi-

Parent company of former Iowa casino owner added to lawsuit SIOUX CITY (AP) — The parent company of a former Iowa riverboat casino has been added to a lawsuit seeking nearly $2 million in unpaid revenue-sharing funds. The Sioux City Journal reports that attorneys for Community Action Agency of Siouxland added Penn National Gaming Inc. to its lawsuit against the Belle of Sioux City, which operated the for-

mer Argosy Sioux City. Doing so serves to debunk arguments made by the former casino’s lawyers that the Belle of Sioux City and Iowa Gaming Company do not have the money to make payments. Attorney Terry Giebelstein, who represents Community Action Agency of Siouxland, argues in a court filing that Belle transferred nearly $13 million to its parent company.

an home value ($83,900) when compared to the similar-sized communities of Atlantic ($88,800) and Carroll ($124,700). The state of Iowa’s median home value is $129,200. “It (the housing study), definitely validated what we felt was the case,” said Pantini. “There’s clearly a lot of demand for housing. So we’re trying to work with builders and developers to try and meet that demand. And right now we have the builders, but just not the developers that want to come in. “The demand is such,” said Pantini, “right now, that we already know we’re losing people to come here because we don’t have the housing. We know there’s a lot of folks that aren’t able to find anything (any housing) and move on to another community. And then we

everyone how a solar eclipse works and how the solar system and our planets intertwine.” People have been planning for this solar event for months, with many hotels across the path of totality having sold out months in advance. Demand for the special solar glasses needed to be able to safely view the solar eclipse without damaging one’s eyes has been through the roof. “We did have some, just got bought out,” said Jaymie Taylor of Creston Super Wal-Mart’s customer service department. “There was a lot of demand for them. We sold out really quickly.” As of press time, only Studio 101 had any solar glasses left for sale in Creston. Studio 101’s Angie Wimber said she is now offering two free pairs of glasses to any customer who purchases a tanning or hair package. “Yesterday, people started going haywire over them. I heard I was the only person in town who had them,” Wimber said. “My phone has been ringing off the hook. It’s been exciting.” ECLIPSE | 12A

A rare solar event is set to take place Monday, and it has created a buzz among people across the country. Monday’s solar eclipse is the first solar eclipse since 1918 to cross the entire United States from the west coast to the east coast. Its path of totality crosses just south of the Creston News Advertiser coverage area, but stargazers in Creston will still have a grand view of the eclipse, weather permitting. In Creston, the moon is expected to cover 97.5 percent of the sun. The moon will be in the sun’s path starting at 11:41 a.m. Monday and the eclipse will continue for about 2 hours, 52 minutes. Peak eclipse as viewed in Creston will be 1:07 p.m. “I would say it is a really unique thing to be able to see a solar eclipse of any kind, but especially one that is so close to totality,” said Emilee Richardson, director of marketing and public relations for Science Center of Iowa in Des Moines. “It helps show school kids and
