The staff at That Bar in Afton is rallying the community for an evening of entertainment to raise money for a good cause. That Bar Co-owners Kevin Lisk, Christine Meadows, Dwayne Price and Manager Josh Henry are hosting Afton’s first bike night 4 p.m. Aug. 8. Henry said the management team at That Bar liked the idea of gathering the community on the square and attracting more visitors to the area. “We are doing this to help build Afton’s community,” said Henry. “We wanted to create another event for the area.” Henry said the idea of a bike night was inspired by the amount of locals who ride their motorcycles to That Bar.

Organizers hope the annual event will also raise money for worthwhile causes in the Afton community. “This year the proceeds will benefit the (Afton) Splash Pad,” Henry said. For the whole family That Bar is planning carnival-style activities and games which will take place 4 to 7 p.m. in Afton’s City Park on the square. “There will be a bouncing castle, ...ring toss, games with footballs and other kids activities,” Henry said. To cool down, an ice cream stand in the park will sell frozen treats, pop and water. Additionally, Up in Smoke in Afton will be catering the event with pulled pork, brisket and barbecued nachos. Instructors and students from Henry’s Martial Arts in Creston will perform a martial arts demonstration 6 to 7 p.m. The demonstration, which Henry describes as a “mock class,” will showcase a variety of hand and leg techniques, leg kicks, judo and grappling moves, and a few forms,

hard-won internationally brokered truce between Israel and Palestinian militants was threatened Friday by a new outbreak of fighting only hours after it took effect. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stopped short of declaring the 72-hour cease-fire dead, but accused Hamas of “flagrantly violating” the truce.

Battles between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants in the southern Gaza Strip left at least 38 people dead, according to Palestinian officials. Israeli media reports said Israeli forces were fired upon by militants with grenades, and responded by calling in helicopter gunships and artillery fire. In addition, Israeli military says one of its soldiers may have been abducted. Meanwhile, Palestinians sent fresh barrages of rockets and mortars into Israel, with the military reporting at least one projectile intercepted and seven falling into open areas. Hostilities between the two sides had continued almost until the last minute before the lull took effect.

Overnight, airstrikes pounded eastern and northern Gaza, close to the fence surrounding the enclave, and militants fired off more barrages of rockets into Israel. But with word having spread quickly overnight of a cessation of hostilities, Palestinians quickly seized upon the respite, trekking to devastated neighborhoods that had been no-go zones due to heavy bombardment. Fishermen put out to sea in their small boats, slipping out of Gaza City’s small harbor for the first time in days. Hamas policemen, out of sight for the past three weeks, took up trafficcop duties, directing the cascade of cars and donkey carts that quickly

formed bottlenecks on major arteries in Gaza City. And as always, there were dead to be buried and injured to be tended to. Israel announced overnight that five soldiers had been killed a day earlier in a mortar strike just outside Gaza, where thousands of Israeli troops gather in staging areas not far from the fence surrounding the coastal strip. That brought the Israeli military death toll to 61. The 24-day-old conflict has claimed more than 1,400 Palestinian lives, with 17 reported killed in overnight strikes, according to Palestinian

School registration slated for Monday By BAILEY POOLMAN

CNA staff reporter bpoolman@crestonnews.com

With the first day of school creeping up, Monday is designated for Creston School District registration. Registration is from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Creston elementary and middle schools. “People can just come in the main entry and they will be directed from there,” said Creston Superintendent Steve McDermott. The first day of school for Creston students is Aug. 20. According to Callie Anderson, principal of Early Childhood Center through second grade, all registration needs will be in one location for easy access and less hassle. McDermott “You don’t have to run from building to building, which is really why we did it,” Anderson said. “They can come and update their student records and pay their registration fees.” The transportation director, nurse, food service employees, counselors and administrators will also be at the schools for any questions. Creston Booster Club will also be at Anderson registration with fall merchandise for sale, and activities department staff will have activity tickets available for purchase. “We really wanted to make it user friendly for our families,” Anderson said. “We tried to streamline it for everybody, so they only had to make one stop if they had multiple children, or multiple people to speak with.” If parents are unable to make Monday’s registration, they can go to each school where they have a child enrolled and register them individually.
