Streams of blue and yellow rain down from the sky after a firework explosion Tuesday night during the 10,000 Crestonians Fourth of July fireworks show in McKinley Park in Creston.

Two condominiums have been constructed — and one sold already — by a partnership between Southwestern Community College’s (SWCC) carpentry and building trades program, and Sonntag Development of Atlantic. Roughly 20 carpentry and electrical students, enrolled in a variety of trade courses offered by SWCC, combined efforts to complete the project. Building began for the students in early September when they assisted with putting in the foundation, and concluded in mid-May. “Students have basically the option of taking one or two years of the carpentry program at SWCC,” said Dennis Downing, carpentry and building trades instructor for SWCC. “So there were both firstyear and second-year stu-

dents from the carpentry program working on it,” said Downing, “and then also students from SWCC’s electrical program did all the wiring. And of course the carpentry students did pretty much all of the carpentry tasks. They helped with the concrete, the stone in the garage — they set up all the cabinets.” The two condominiums, located at 408 and 410 S. Maple St. in Creston, are one-story ranches with 877 above grade square feet. Each features a 10-by-10 foot patio, and a 21-by-10by-14 foot attached garage. The SWCC carpentry and trades program has been constructing residential buildings and instructing students in the process for more than 10 years. “We had various levels of experience in the group this year,” said Downing. “I had some students that had taken some high school building classes, I had some students with no experience whatsoever and then there were some students who had taken a year of their college program already. We also had a few students this year SWCC | 2A

Paul Eugene McKinney, 77, of Mount Ayr died after an accident 6:46 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of 165th Street and Highway 169. According to a Union County Sheriff report, McKinney, driving a 2017 Harley-Davidson south on Highway 169, began gradually veering to the right across the shoulder and into the west ditch. The vehicle continued down the ditch, traveling through an evergreen tree approximately 6 inches in diameter, and continued through a barb-wire fence into a hay field. The vehicle then came to rest on its side facing northwest. McKinney was not wear-

ing a helmet and driving distractions are currently unknown. Damage estimate is $35,000 to McKinney’s vehicle and $500 to the fence owned by Jerry Abel of Creston. Mary Elaine Williamson, 70, of Mount Ayr, a passenger of McKinney’s motorcycle, was injured during the accident and transported by air ambulance to a Des Moines hospital, where her condition is currently unknown. Williamson was wearing a helmet. McKinney died at the scene and was transported by ground ambulance to Greater Regional Medical Center.
