A Creston woman has been charged with arson after a string of fires at a residence located at 805 1/2 W. Jefferson St. in Creston. Shelia Renae Shoults, 42, 802 W. Adams St., was charged with three counts of arson 11:30 p.m. Sunday at Shoults Creston Law Enforcement Center. Shoults was being held in Ringgold County Jail for Union County awaiting
bond hearing. According to a Creston Police report, officers and Creston Fire Department were dispatched to 805 1/2 W. Jefferson St. in response to a house on fire. When officers and the fire department arrived, the house was fully engaged with flames breaching the roof of the house. It marked the fourth time the house had caught fire, with other attempts indicating the house was deliberately set on fire. A camera was placed in the house in an attempt to capture any illegal activity within the residence. Creston Fire Department successfully removed the camera from the house and images captured on the camera showed the
suspect. “We saw her walk through the house and back toward the e n t r y point,” Creston Fire Chief T o d d Jackson said. “She Jackson admitted at that point she had ignited some material in the house with a lighter. That was consistent with the images we had.” Jackson said Shoults admitted to using a stack of magazines and a bag of charcoal in the two other incidents Shoults confessed to. Sunday’s fire started just inside the back door

of the residence, owned by Chris Rehmeyer. There was about an hour delay between the time the fire was ignited and when the call was placed to Creston Fire Department, during which time the fire spread throughout the house. Firefighters were on scene from approximately 8 p.m. until midnight containing the fire, while a crew stayed overnight to watch for hot spots and exposure issues. “Those are half lots, so they’re about 10-12 feet between that house and neighboring houses,” Jackson said. “That was our biggest concern. We decided early on it was too fully involved to mount an interior attack, so we protected exterior exposures
and let it burn down.”
Investigation Creston Police Chief Paul Ver Meer said the investigation began in June when Creston Fire Department alerted the police department about suspicious activity at the house. “We had another incident that occurred a week ago, two weeks ago, so we had the fire department install a camera in the house to see if we could get some video of whoever might be doing it,” Ver Meer s a i d . “ L a s t Ver Meer night, when the fire call came in,
the first thing the fire department did was go and get the camera out and lo and behold, we had a suspect on it.” According to Ver Meer, officers identified Shoults and were familiar with her. Shoults was located and was asked to come to the Law Enforcement Center for questioning, which she agreed to do. Shoults was read her rights and confessed to setting the house on fire. She said she was tired of all the strange people going in and out of the the house and staying in it. She was also concerned because children went into the house, as well.
