WEST DES MOINES – DEKKO Foundation has awarded the Creston Public Library $18,510 for the purchase of technology to create two “discovery and learning centers” within the library. The special grant request, titled “a little love for libraries,” had a June 1 deadline. S u e Teutsch, acting director of the lib r a r y , Teutsch sought help with researching and writing the grant application from Mandy (Kolesik) Houk H o u k of Marketing Kinetics, West Des Moines, and library board president Ann Coulter. The grant proposal requested funding for developing two discovery and learning centers. Each will focus on integrating technology, interactive discovery and literacy programming. Each of the two centers will consist of a large LCD TV and 10 iPads. The televisions will be equipped with Apple TV so that up to 10 children or adults can interact with the TV presentation. A MacBook Pro for programming facilitators will be provided for each area. The “Love Your Library” grant also covers literacy software and charging

WINTERSET - Under a shade tree in the middle of the Madison County Historical Complex in Winterset Saturday evening, former first lady and secretary of state Hillary Clinton laid out her vision for the presidency. Clinton, the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination, visited Winterset to speak to voters at the Iowa Democratic Party 3rd District’s “Summer Wine Down.” Another Democratic presidential hopeful, former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, spoke prior to Clinton’s arrival. During her speech, Clinton spoke in favor of affordable college, her new climate change policy and increased attention for those suffering from substance abuse and mental health problems. She said she would work to defend and improve the Affordable Care Act and would take on a tax system that favors the wealthy. Clinton ended her speech by talking about how her granddaughter, Charlotte, has affected her passion for the future of the country. “With all said and done, my campaign is really about my granddaughter, and all the kids in our country,” she said. “I want, at the end of my eight years, to be able to

Educators and other mentors will soon be invited to use the centers to improve academic outcomes among Union County K-12 students and school-aged children. More information about training and scheduling will be forthcoming. The mission of the Creston Public Library is to provide vital information and other services that help area residents of all ages discover, learn and succeed.
