Creston Community School District will soon be looking for the public’s input on which major projects it would like to see done. During the June CCSD Board of Directors meeting, Superintendent Steve McDermott presented the board with a list of potential major projects under a capital improvement plan. During last week’s July meeting, the board approved McDermott to pursue cost estimates for those projects so the board can begin prioritizing them. After receiving cost estimates, McDermott would like to conduct a public survey to see how the school district’s taxpayers feel about the projects. “A lot of it has to do with

timing, looking at which project may be most affordable first,” McDermott said. “I also think it’s really important to our school board to know what the public standing is out McDermott there for some of these things. The taxpayers are footing the bill for these. The board wants to make sure it has a good read on what the community thinks.” McDermott said the public survey will likely go out sometime in late August or September. The list of potential projects ranges from repairing the storm sewer under the gym at the Early Child-

hood Center and Burton R. Jones complex to additional parking at the elementary/middle school to potentially building a new, larger competition gym. McDermott described some of the projects as safety maintenance items that still have a large dollar amount attached to them, while others are more exciting projects.

Projects Some of the larger projects McDermott presented to the board included an adaptive playground accessible to students of all abilities and/or an adaptive ball field with a surface conducive to wheelchairs. “When you look at this adaptive playground area, they have them in Des Moines and Ankeny and populated areas, why not have one here?” McDer-

Death toll reaches 10 in smuggling case in Texas SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The death toll climbed to 10 in the case of a broiling tractor-trailer found packed with immigrants, federal authorities said Monday as a suspect in the smuggling case awaited a court appearance. Federal prosecutors said they planned to bring charges against James Mathew Bradley Jr., 60, of Clearwater, Florida. They would not immediately confirm he was the driver of the rig, though local authorities said over the weekend that the driver was arrested. Authorities discovered eight bodies inside the crowded 18-wheeler parked outside a Walmart in the summer heat, and two more victims died at the hospital. Officials feared the death toll could rise because nearly 20 others rescued from the truck were in dire con-

dition, many suffering from extreme dehydration and heatstroke. “We’re looking at a human-trafficking crime,” San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said Sunday, calling it “a horrific tragedy.” It was not immediately known whether Bradley had an attorney who could speak on his behalf. Authorities would not say whether the trailer was locked when they arrived, but they said it had no working air conditioning. The victims “were very hot to the touch. So these people were in this trailer without any signs of any type of water,” Fire Chief Charles Hood said. It was the latest smuggling-by-truck operation to end in tragedy. In one of the TRUCK | 2A
