With Iowa’s new law allowing the sale and purchase of consumer-grade fireworks, one local is taking advantage by opening a fireworks shop in town.

Brandon Vonk of Creston has plenty of experience with fireworks and now will put that expertise to use as owner of Top Notch Fireworks.

Top Notch Fireworks, at least for this first season of selling fireworks, will be located at 900 S. Division St. in Creston. It will be located in a tent on the north side of the Big Boyz Toyz parking lot.

Vonk previously worked the fireworks tents in Eag-

leville, Missouri, while he was in high school. He’s spent the past five years with the Creston Shooters and currently serves as vice president of the organization that puts on Creston’s Fourth of July show and various other shows throughout the area.

“I know about all the inner workings you need to know of (fireworks),” Vonk s a i d .

“We actually have an inspection scheduled for Monday morning,” said Creston Fire Chief Todd Jackson. “He’s very familiar with all the rules and regulations. He’s met with us a couple of times. Monday, we’ll just go through it with him and make sure he has all his exit signs in place and fire extinguishers in place.”

His plan is to begin selling fireworks Tuesday and sell through July 8. The new Iowa law also allows for fireworks sales in December leading up to Christmas and New Year’s Eve, but Vonk said he does not plan to sell during that time frame.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Friday broke his silence on Twitter following explosive testimony by fired FBI Director James Comey, declaring “total and complete vindication.”

Trump’s Twitter account had been quiet throughout Comey’s testimony accusing the administration of spreading “lies.” But a day after the closely watched hearing, Trump struck back with an early morning tweet: “Wow, Comey is a leaker.”

While state law allows for the sale and purchase of fireworks, the current Creston ordinance on fireworks does not allow for the shooting of fireworks within city limits. Fireworks can be shot outside of city limits with the permission of property owners.

Residents must be 18 or older in order to purchase fireworks, according to state law. However, children under 18 are allowed to shoot fireworks with the supervision of an adult.

According to fire code, tent structures selling fireworks require a minimum of two exits, 35 feet from any corner of the tent with illuminated emergency exit signs.

Hours will be noon to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. On July 1, 2 and 3, the tent will be open from 9 a.m. until approximately 9:30 or 10:30 p.m., or “as long as people are coming through the door, we’ll stay open,” Vonk said.

On July 4, the tent will be open from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Vonk said no products will be left in the tent overnight for safety reasons and, instead, will be locked in a container.

According to Jackson, Vonk’s experience with fireworks will make the process easier on the fire department.

“We don’t have to go through as much of an education process,” Jackson said. “He certainly has a head start on other people.

“I found him to be credible, candid and thorough,” Collins said of Comey on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” Also in his testimony, Comey revealed that he’d orchestrated the public release of information about his private conversations with the president in an effort to further the investigation.

Vonk said there will still be several employees available throughout the tent to assist customers with any questions or safety concerns.

Employees will also be able to help customers set up their fireworks shows and label the products with numbers for how to shoot the show.

Prices for 500-gram cakes will likely run between $5060, while artillery shells will be priced at $70-80. Packages for children will mostly be $20 or less.

According to Vonk, the

tent will accept all major credit cards – chipped or slide – and cash. The tent will be locally owned and operated and the money will stay in Creston.

Vonk said he was pleased to see the bill signed into law by former Gov. Terry Branstad.

“Everybody has been purchasing them anyway,” he said. “The ban was initially started from a thing of sparklers. I don’t think it was right you could walk into Wal-Mart and buy sparklers, which is what started the ban anyway. It’s all about being responsible.

As long as you’re safe with them, there should be no reason we can’t make this work. I think it’s a good opportunity for up-and-comers and for people to be able to legally celebrate the Fourth again.”

Trump’s private attorney, Marc Kasowitz, seized on Comey’s admission that he had told Trump on multiple occasions that he was not personally under investigation and maintained the testimony made clear that Trump “never, in form or substance, directed or suggested that Mr. Comey stop investigating anyone.”

Kasowitz also jumped on Comey’s revelation that he had released details of his private conversations with the president, casting the former FBI director as one of the “leakers” set on undermining the Trump administration.

Still, there was no doubt the veteran lawman made for a challenging adversary.

“It’s my judgment that I was fired because of the Russia investigation,” Comey said toward the end of

more than two hours of testimony before the Senate intelligence committee.

“I was fired in some way to change, or the endeavor was to change, the way the Russia investigation was being conducted.

“That is a very big deal, and not just because it involves me.”

At one point he practically dared Trump to release any recordings of their conversations, a prospect the president once alluded to in a tweet.

“Lordy, I hope there are tapes,” Comey said, suggesting such evidence would back up his account over the president’s.

The disclosures that followed Comey’s firing have raised questions about why Comey, known in government for an indep e n d e n t Comey streak and a willingness to buck protocol, did not speak out publicly while on the job, or at least make his objections directly known to the president.

Discussing the meeting in which Comey says Trump asked him to back off Flynn, Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California asked, “Why didn’t you stop and say, ‘Mr. President, this is wrong,’?”

“It’s a great question,” Comey replied. “Maybe if I were stronger I would have.

versation, I just took it in.”

Comey also made clear that political entanglement in law enforcement has cut across party lines.

During a discussion of the Hillary Clinton email investigation, Comey disclosed that then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch, an Obama administration appointee, instructed him to refer to the issue as a “matter,” not an “investigation.”

“That concerned me because that language tracked how the campaign was talking about the FBI’s work and that’s concerning,” he said. “We had an investigation open at the time so that gave me a queasy feeling.”

Many Democrats still blame Comey for Clinton’s loss, leading Trump to apparently believe they would applaud him for firing Comey. The opposite occurred, as the firing created a political firestorm that has stalled Trump’s legislative agenda and taken over Washington.

Under questioning Thursday, Comey reaffirmed the intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia meddled in the election.

“There should be no fuzz on this. The Russians interfered,” Comey stated firmly. “That happened. It’s about as un-fake as you can possibly get.”

Trump has begrudgingly accepted that assessment.

But he has also suggested he doesn’t believe it, saying Russia is a “ruse” and calling the investigation into the matter a “witch hunt.”

Cortni Lynn White, 31, of Creston, was charged with fourth-degree theft 5:37 p.m.

Thursday, at Laurel Street.

According to a Creston Police report, White did enter Wal-Mart and place merchandise in a shopping cart while in the store. The merchandise was not paid for and the defendant went to her car after she had instructed her son to push the cart out to the vehicle she was in. The son was stopped in the entryway of the store by an employee, and officers were contacted. Upon arrival, officers

spoke with the son who said he had been instructed by his mother to take the cart full of merchandise to her car, at which point White was charged and transported to Union County Law Enforcement Center. The items in the cart were valued at approximately $296.46.

White was released on $1,000 bond.

CLUB NEWS Salem Lutheran Women

Salem Lutheran Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America met June 4 following worship. Carolyn Biere presided at the meeting.

Claudia Peppers read the minutes from the March 5 meeting.

The treasurer’s report was given by Cari Jack. The spring sale did very well. Money from the sale will be dispersed in the fall to various local charities as well to other mission groups.

Dorothy McNaught gave a short account of the cluster meeting in April at Bethlehem Lutheran in Red Oak which she, Judy Woods, Peppers and Biere attended. Salem will be hosting the Lydia Cluster in spring 2018. Other old business included the need for carafes and water pitchers to be purchased for the kitchen.

New business discussed was the Western Iowa Southern Women’s Organization convention will be held June 24 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Webster City. Biere will be attending as our delegate.

Money will be sent for offering and an in-kind donation to the Hamilton County Public Health. A quilt (80� X 90�) made by Helen Herzberg will be used in the silent auction basket.

Triennial Convention of the Women of the ELCA will be held July 11-13 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, followed by the gathering July 13-16.

Mission statement of the Women of the ELCA: To mobilize women to act boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ. The meeting adjourned. ——————

Catholic Daughters

Court Joan of Arc No. 428 met May 9. Following Mass, dinner was served by the committee of chairman Carol McKee, Iris Smith, Teresa Pudenz, Sharon Skarda and Dora Coen. Vice-regent, Anita Studer called the meeting to order by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and an Easter prayer.

Alice Reed gave the treasurer’s report. Virginia Aguilar made the motion to approve. Pat Pokorny seconded it and motion carried. Teresa Weis presented a bill for convention expenses, Pudenz

made the motion to pay it and Aguilar seconded. Motion carried.

The minutes of the last meeting were read. Betty Baker made the motion to approve them, Lois Nelson seconded and they were approved.

Baker reported she sent one card to Father Pins. Pokorny reported the LC Clinic fundraiser was well attended. They have more than 500 contacts with clientele.

Studer told members about the Right to Life workshop they attended at state convention.

Under new business, members discussed Priest Appreciation day. Weis made the motion the group give Father Halbur a gift, Pokorny seconded and motion carried.

Plans were made for the graduation reception after Mass May 21. Weis will get the food.

The next meeting will be “Our Night Out� June 13 with Kathy Tapken as chairman.

Arlene Carlson won the door prize. Members recited the membership prayer to close the meeting. Aguilar made the motion to adjourn, Joanne Gibson seconded and meeting adjourned. ——————

Connie Purdum, alternate delegate from Chapter AZ and Susan Weight, delegate from Chapter LG, attended the 125th annual Convention of lowa State Chapter P.E.O. Sisterhood June 3-4 in Des Moines. With the theme “Carry P.E.O. In Your Heart,�

Catherine Fouts, Chapter AO, of Newton, presided over 700 delegates and visitors.

Twenty-four chapters from north central Iowa served as the hostess group for the convention. This committee was headed by Debbie Gray, MD, of Fort Dodge; Carrie Omans, FB, of Garner; and Marsha Newton, GF, of Britt.

Attendees participated in workshops and heard from recipients of P.E.O.’s six philanthropies and the Iowa P.E.O. Project Fund. The convention concluded with the installation of the 2017-18 executive board officers headed by president Pat Shipley, CH, of Villisca; vice president, Kate Raun, OR, of Norwalk; organizer, Bev Templeton, FN, of Garner; treasurer, Sue Aanes, EV, of New London; and secretary, Carol Goldsmith, CB, of Ida Grove.

New business included officers were assigned for installation 2 p.m. June 15 at the church. Coffee Sunday will be June 11 due to Father’s Day on June 18. There will be no circle meetings in July and August.

Crest Area for Life met 7 p.m. May 23 at the Holy Spirit Parish Hall. President Terry Madison opened the meeting with the Right to Life Prayer.

June Huewe gave the treasurer’s report. Bills paid were for the yearly safe deposit box rental and for the Crises Pregnancy Center ads in the Hanson Directory. Motion was made by Betty Baker, second

by Velma Riegel to approve the report, and motion passed.

Velma Riegel gave the new baby report. She has sent five letters since the April meeting.

Political issues were discussed. Recent federal legislation included removal of funding for Planned Parenthood.

Iowa legislation included bans on abortion after 20 weeks, 72 hour waiting periods and Planned Parenthood funding ban.

Old Business included ads for Mother’s Day were run in Creston and Afton papers.

Terry will get ads for Father’s Day to both papers. It was noted that the LC Clinic banquets, which were held on May 4 in Creston and May 11 in Stuart were well attended.

The guest speaker was Pastor Larry Low of New Virginia. Rich mentioned that a number of baby quilts have been donated and a fundrais-

er called Baby Bottle Boomerang is underway with a number of church groups participating. There was some discussion about the billboard sign on North Cherry Street Road. Meg has contacted Margaret Turk who asked us to decide on replacement signs. A committee of Meg, Betty and Velma will decide on the signs based on preferences noted by others at the meeting. Members hope to have new signs installed soon.

New business discussed were plans for the July 4 parade and Union County Fair parade and booth were discussed. Members will order additional pencils and stickers to hand out. Union County Fair will be July 20-26 with the parade Saturday, July 22.

The senior citizen day will be Tuesday instead of Wednesday. The group needs people to help with both parades and the booth. Next meeting will be 7 p.m. June 27. The meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m. ——————

Iowa Alpha Sigma Master Chapter No. 1632 of Beta Sigma Phi met May 25 at the home of Martha McAuley with Patricia Fils as hostess.

Prior to the meeting, new officers for the 2017-18 year were installed and new president, Loretta Kelly, presided over the meeting. Other officers are Vice President, Marilyn Larimore; Treasurer, Fils; and Secretary, Norma Putnam.

Minutes of the May 11 meeting were read and corrected and arrangements made for transferring access to banking to the new treasurer. Following committee reports, with no further business to discuss, the president read from the Book of Beta Sigma Phi regarding the order of meetings and the meeting was adjourned.

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, at the Windrow meeting room with 20 members and two guests. President Chris Eaton presided, Roger Lanning gave the prayer and Bill Kunert was the finemaster.

The program was given

by Joe Owens with the local Cancer Support Ministry. He discussed the founding of the group after his own cancer diagnosis and wanting to offer others support with time and funds to help them and their families in their medical journey. There are several that help with this non-denominational ministry.

A sign up sheet was sent out for club members to help June 27 with Open Table.

The way indicated here is really the only good way to get here.

Children’s Cancer Connection to hold oncology camp DES MOINES – Children’s Cancer Connection, a nonprofit organization based in Des Moines with offices in Iowa City and Cedar Falls, was founded in 1988. They strive to help pediatric cancer patients and their families in Iowa and surrounding states, regardless of treatment outcome or years off treatment. They support the entire family through the entire journey by providing

Iowa woman gets 10 years in prison for neglecting ailing son DAVENPORT (AP) — An eastern Iowa woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for neglecting her ailing son.

Online court records say 30-year-old Valarie Clark also was fined $7,500 at her hearing Thursday in Scott County District Court. The judge suspended the fine.

The Eldridge woman had

pleaded guilty to neglect or abandonment of a dependent person.

Police say Clark’s son suffers from a medical disorder characterized by the inability of the body to process proteins.

The boy, then 6, was admitted to a hospital in February 2016 for low blood sugar and starvation.

A drive to remember Barncastle’s homer helps Panthers to split with Kuemper

Creston sophomore Beau Barnstacle saw a pitch he liked with two outs and a runner on in game one of the seventh inning of Thursday’s Hawkeye 10 Conference doubleheader against Kuemper Catholic.

Barnstacle gave a good swing, the ball connected with the bat.

Barncastle’s hit kept carrying, carrying and carrying.

Finally it landed far past the left center field fence.

Barncastle’s walkoff home run gave Creston a 4-3 win in game one.

Once the ball cleared the fence, Barnstacle let loose a swarm of positive emotions, celebrating his first walk-off hit.

“It was crazy,” Barncastle said. “I started getting all hyped up when I got to third.”

He was greeting by a joyous group of Panthers at the plate.

“When I touched the plate, everyone mauled me,” Barncastle said. “It was a lot of fun.”

The roar of the Panther faithful added to the excitement.

“It was crazy how all the people here went wild,” Barncastle said. “It got me amped up. The heart was pounding unlike anything.”

Cody Crawford started the inning with a double.

The swing came at a good time for the senior.

“I had been struggling, but it all comes around,” Crawford set.

The inning was set up well for the Panthers, with the heart of the order following.

From the beginning of Thursday’s Hawkeye 10 softball battle between Kuemper Catholic and Creston at Panther Field, the visiting Knights were on a mission to knock the stuffing out of the ball.

Kuemper Catholic pounded out 26 hits and 22 total runs in sweeping the doubleheader 11-1 and 11-6.

Learning day for Cook and Haley at state co-ed meet Creston pair plays at state coed tennis meet

DES MOINES — Tuesday was a new experience for Creston junior Jacob Cook and sophomore Megan Haley.

What the two experienced in the Class 1A coed doubles tournament will serve them well going forward during the play at the Waveland Tennis Center in Des Moines.

“I felt really good about three, four, five coming up and having a chance to get (Crawford) in,” said Creston coach Steve Birchard.

“I honestly thought someone would get it up, get it out of here because Kadon (Hulett) and Jadon (Driskell) have that ability.”

Barncastle wasn’t the expected hero, but he found himself in that spot.

Driskell struck out swinging and Hulett struck out looking, leaving it up to Barncastle.

“I was expecting a gapper from Beau that would tie it up,” Birchard said.

At first, Barncastle didn’t expect the ball to clear the fence.

Aided by a nice south breeze, the ball pushed farther and farther, until it cleared the fence.

“It was high and it kept going, kept going, kept carrying,” Birchard said. “There was that breeze that carried some balls.”

Kuemper Catholic took the night cap 10-3 to split the twin bill.

In the sixth, the Panthers closed within a run. Dustin Merritt singled, stole second and scored on Eli Loudon’s double.

The pitching tandem of Driskell starting and Jack Fry in relief worked well.

Kuemper Catholic had the hot bats going early in game two.

Tyler Laing crushed a three-run home run in the first for the early lead.

Creston countered in the bottom of the first. Crawford singled and Driskell followed with a drive over the left-center field fence.

Laing kept the hot stick going in the second. After the bases were loaded with two outs, Laing cleared them with a one-hopper to the right centerfield fence for a 6-2 lead.

Creston cut into the lead in the fourth. Luke Latham singled and later scored on a Fitzgerald sacrifice fly.

LaMasters took the game two loss in the circle.

UP NEXT — Creston (49, 2-7) will play four games this weekend as part of its John Stephens Classic. Creston plays Bondurrant-Farrar today (Friday) at 12:30 p.m. and Ankeny at 7:30 p.m.

The Panthers will also play Sioux City East at 4 p.m.

The competition is why Cooper sets up the schedule he does for both the boys and girls.

“I was at the boys state tournament and looking around and half our schedule was there, half the kids that were playing we’d seen, from Boone, Ballard, Atlantic, Clarke, North Polk,” Cooper said. “At that moment, I said this is why we travel and hour and 45 minutes to play Boone, why we don’t mind traveling and hour and 45 minutes to play Ballard.

Now Cook and Haley turn their attention to helping with the summer program, and improving themselves.

“They’ll hit a couple times,” Cooper said. “Megan got better at things.

She’ll work on it this summer. It’s one of those things I’m not worried with either. They put their time in. Cook will put a bunch of time in this summer. They’ll have another month of it, then take a few weeks off, then get right back at it.”

“It’s one of those deals where there’s a lot of kids who are state qualifiers,” said Creston coach Kevin Cooper. “Everywhere you look they are there. The first team we played from Assumption, both the boy and girl are state qualifier. The Waverly girl was second in doubles. The Ballard girl is a two-time qualifier.”

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/ AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. CRESTON WATER SUPPLY is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested.
