Taxi service set up for July 4
Decades after devastating fire, Iowa warily allows fireworks ADEL (AP) — On a scorching day 86 years ago, a dropped sparkler ignited an inferno that roared through much of the small city of Spencer, Iowa, and led to a statewide fireworks ban that endured for generations. Fireworks have since become legal in most of the country and Iowa legislators voted this year to end the bans. But with the Fourth of July approaching, officials in many cities are resisting fireworks sales and prohibiting people from setting off newly legal bottle rockets, firecrackers and roman candles. “They’ve made it really tough,” said Todd Wallace,

Shuttle will run from Tractor Supply Company to McKinley Park ■

Looking to avoid traffic around McKinley Park during the Fourth of July? The Creston Lions Club has put together a shuttle service in hopes to divert some traffic away from the festivities this Independence Day. Those who wish to take advantage of the service should park at the Tractor Supply Company parking lot located at 612 New York Ave. The service will start 1 p.m. Tuesday and will take those interested to McKin-
ley Park. The shuttle will also bring spectators back to their cars until 10 p.m. The shuttle is scheduled to run every 30 minutes, but could run more often if there is a higher demand. Signs signaling where to park will be posted in the parking lot. The taxi will not charge, but will be accepting donations with the money going back to the Lions Club. The idea came about because West Adams Street and the West Adams Street bridge will not be open. “Just the fact that West Adams Street is not open,” said Ron Duphy, who is a part of the Lions Club publicity committee. “There may be problems with traffic.” The idea also stemmed from the shuttle service set up by the Clearfield Lions
Club transporting Iowa State Fair attendees from their cars to the fair. The taxi service was a last-minute idea, but that doesn’t mean it has gone unnoticed. Ellen Gerharz, executive director of the Creston Chamber of Commerce, was pleased with the idea and believes it should be taken advantage of. “I think its a great idea,” said Gerharz. “If they park 50 or 100 cars that’s better t h a n them try- Gerharz ing to get into the area around the park.” Gerharz was also impressed with the individuals
willing to volunteer their time to the shuttle. “It’s going to take individuals to drive those cars so the fact that these folks are willing to give up an hour or two hours of their day to drive others to the park,” said Gerharz. “It’s a great testament to the volunteer group we have in the community.” This will be the first taxi service of its kind in Creston and the Lions Club hopes it could become an annual benefit. “I think, if it’s useful to the public,” said Dunphy, “that would be something that would encourage us to do it year after year.” McKinley Park will host the annual 10,000 Crestonians Fourth of July celebration on Tuesday. who gave up on plans to sell fireworks from a tent in a grassy field on the edge of Des Moines. “There would be no impact on anybody, but the city said, ‘no can do.’” Many Iowa officials remain keenly aware of the blaze that engulfed about 100 buildings in Spencer on a 97-degree, windy June day in 1931, when a fire started by a sparkler at Bjornstad’s drugstore quickly spread. Iowa lawmakers were prodded to end the ban by polls showing support for legalizing fireworks, the prospect of $1.5 million annually IOWA | 2A
Trump, SKorea’s leader returning to talks on trade, NKorea WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Friday will discuss North Korea and trade with South Korea’s new leader, whose pro-engagement stance toward the North could clash with the U.S. administration’s intent to crank up sanctions. Trump welcomed South Korean President Moon Jae-in for formal talks at the White House. The two leaders had their first meeting over dinner Thursday, shortly after the Treasury Department blacklisted a Chinese bank accused of conducting millions in illicit
business with North Korea. The South Korean leader has sought to make clear to the U.S. that he is serious about dealing with his neighbor’s threat, despite his inclination to restart dialogue with the North to address its nuclear weapons development. Trump and Moon are meeting one-on-one in the Oval Office, then will hold talks involving other officials. Afterward, the two leaders will make statements to reporters.
