What do a pair of Des Moines University (DMU) medical students have in common with a ma and pa pioneer couple out of the mid-19th century? More than meets the eye. Preston Hatch, second-year DMU medical student from Des Moines, and his wife Kiki Hatch found themselves charged with the safekeeping of 11 Iowa Mormon youths and teens this week, as part of a Mormon Trail re-enactment beginning in Murray and concluding nearly 20 miles west at Three Mile Lake, three days later. “It was a really good experience,” said Preston. “Overall, it was really good

Preston Hatch, of Des Moines, watches on as young members of his trekking unit organize the packing of a traditional wooden handcart used by many Mormons more than 150 years ago to cross the Mormon Trail. in the fact that nobody died, nobody got injured — nobody had any traumatic experiences. No dysentery, no one dying of random gunshot wounds or anything like that.” But jokes aside, Preston

wanted his family unit to have the type of experience he’d had when he originally completed the trek as a youth himself. “I really hope that they walk away with an increased faith in God,” Preston said.

“I mean, that’s the whole point of us being here. We’re hoping that they’ll connect with their ancestors. The reason we’re doing this, is as a TREK | 12A

Shenandoah were damaged. Sheldon said he was not aware of any injuries. The tornado dropped as several tornado warnings were issued Wednesday for across Iowa. MLB umpire Tumpane rescues woman on Pittsburgh bridge PITTSBURGH (AP) — John Tumpane can’t explain why he approached the woman as she hopped over the railing of the Roberto Clemente Bridge on Wednesday afternoon. The woman told Tumpane she just wanted to get a better view of the Allegheny River below. The look on her face and the tone of her Tumpane voice suggested otherwise to Tumpane, a major league baseball umpire in town to work the series between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Tampa Bay Rays. So the 34-year-old Tump-

ane reached for the woman even as she urged him to let her go. “It was just pure instinct,” Tumpane said . “You hear kind of stories of this all the time, different scenarios, people aiding and situation where I was lucky enough to be there to help and try to think of everything I could do, hanging on to her. At times she wanted to go the other way. I was like, ‘not on my watch, please.’ We were just hanging on.” And saving a life. Tumpane secured one of her arms. A bystander walked up and grabbed the other while another — Mike Weinman, an employee for the Rays — clutched her legs and pinned them to the RESCUE | 2A

4 protesters arrested at Iowa Air National Guard base DES MOINES, (AP) — Authorities have arrested four people at a protest blocking access to the Iowa Air National Guard base at Des Moines International Airport. Several of the 20 or so protesters left at police request Wednesday morning. The four who remained, connected to concrete barriers, were arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and interference with official acts. Firefighters gave the four masks and other protection from

debris as they were cut from the barriers. A protest organizer who wasn’t arrested, Frank Cordaro, says protesters want the Air Guard unit to end its work of controlling military drone aircraft flying missions overseas. A Guard spokesman, Col. Greg Hapgood, says the 132nd Wing of the Iowa Air National Guard remotely operates MQ-9 Reaper aircraft that mostly fly intelligence-gathering missions.
