Additions and alterations are in order for this year’s Union County Fair. While historically a Saturday through Thursday fair, this year’s event will be held Thursday, July 20, through Wednesday, July 26, at the Union County Fairgrounds in Afton. According to Union County Fair Board President Dannie Stephens, the changes were a long time coming. “For quite a while,” said Stephens, “we’ve been kind of crunched — swine, sheep, everything was all the same day. The horse show, small animals — they were all on the same day. So this will give us a little more time

to spread those out, hopefully, and get those in (the fair) a little bit better than we Stephens have in the past.” On top of adding a day to the fair’s length, the meat of the fair’s schedule will now be held over the weekend. “By going over the weekend,” Stephens said, “we’re hoping it’ll help some of the working parents be able to be at the fair a little bit more, without having to take off work quite as much. “Before,” Stephens continued, “the livestock came in Sunday afternoon and was there through Thurs-

Total solar eclipse 1st in 99 years to sweep width of US CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — This August, the U.S. will experience its first coast-to-coast total solar eclipse in 99 years. Total solar eclipses occur every year or two or three, often in the middle of nowhere like the South Pacific or Antarctic. What makes this one so special — at least for Americans — is that it will cut diagonally across the entire United States. The path of totality on Aug. 21 — where day brief-

ly becomes night — will pass over Oregon, continuing through the heartland all the way to Charleston, South Carolina. Those on the outskirts — all the way into Canada, Central America and even the upper part of South America — will be treated to a partial eclipse. The last time a total solar eclipse swept the whole width of the U.S. was in 1918.

day. So parents had to be mostly showing during the week, which wasn’t good.” A Saturday concert is also planned as the fair readjusts its schedule. Jake Worthington, country artist and runner-up on season six of NBC TV show “The Voice,” will headline the night’s entertainment. And the fair’s parade, previously held on Sunday evening, is moved to Saturday evening directly preceding the concert. But for those interested in the fair’s free night of entertainment, the fair’s opening day may be ideal. “We’ll have the queen’s crowning at 6 p.m. (on Thursday),” said Stephens. “It will be followed by the mounted shooting in the rodeo arena, and the Bill Riley talent show in the

church and the community. I try to write music every so often. The kids are a hobby. I do grilling and cooking and smoking and baking, anything I can eat.

And that grant is for $262,533. “Building on Tradition” is the fundraising campaign launched Feb. 1 to raise $1.5 million for a renovation project on the Union County Fairgrounds in Afton. The renovation project includes a new 110-feet-by240-feet building that will house the sheep and hogs and also have a restroom facility and show arena. The project also includes a 110-feet-by-160-feet building that will house the cattle. Union County Fair Board Member Ben Adamson hopes the building project will be completed in time for next year’s fair. “Our plans,” said Adamson, “are — as long as everything k e e p s going as planned — to sometime in the first few weeks in August Adamson start seeing some work being done in terms of disconnecting utilities and starting the demolition process of the existing buildings and dirtwork. “We’re hoping,” Adamson continued, “that by the
