An excavator works to return Jean Minor’s Keystone Challenger camper to its correct position Saturday morning at Windmill Lake County Park in Taylor County after straight-line winds up to 90 mph flipped it upside down Friday night. Minor and her husband were inside the camper when it was flipped upside down, but escaped without any injuries.

BEDFORD – Father’s Day weekend took an unexpected turn for campers at Windmill Lake County Park in rural Taylor County Friday night. Straight-line winds between 80 and 90 mph ripped through southwest Iowa Friday night, causing a scary scene at Windmill Lake, 9 1/2 miles northwest of Bedford. Multiple campers were blown into the lake, some were turned on their sides and some were even flipped STORM | 2A

This year’s Creston Half Marathon and 5K will feature new routes. The fourth annual road races are scheduled for Sunday, July 2, with the half marathon beginning at 7:30 a.m. and the 5K starting at 8:30 a.m. Entry fees are $35 for the half marathon and $25 for the 5K. Entrants who register by Wednesday will be guaranteed their shirt size and a finisher’s medal. Registration can be done online at www.crestonhalfmarathon.com. Finisher’s medals, seen above, are once again being made locally by Creston: Arts. “Both routes are a little bit different,” said Mindy Stalker, race organizer. “The half marathon route is more of a direct point to point. We start a little bit Stalker further north of Green Valley so we don’t have quite as many detours. I’d like to say I removed all the hills, but that didn’t happen.” The 5K route will be centered around McKinley Park and McKinley Lake. This year’s race will fea-
ture live music in at least one spot along the half marathon route, along with water and Gatorade stations at approximately every mile. There will also be at least one Gu station for the half marathon. Hy-Vee is the post-race sponsor and will be providing refreshments afterward for participants. With ongoing construction around McKinley Park, Stalker suggests participants take Highway 34 and turn at the Freedom Rock and enter McKinley Park from the south through the underpass, then turn west on Stone Street and park in the Creston Municipal Pool parking lot. The start and finish line will once again be located up the hill from the pool parking lot near the bear carving. Half marathon participants can also park at the pool and Carey Lynam is providing transportation to the starting line with the Party Lizard bus. The bus will leave McKinley Park around 7 a.m. The top male and top female finishers in the half marathon each receive $200 in prize money, while the second-place male and second-place female each receive $100. Top male and female finishers in the 5K receive $50 in prize money and second-place finishers RACE | 2A
