The 11th annual Party in the Park will be held Saturday, June 24, and features three popular tribute bands.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the gate and can be purchased at Creston News Advertiser, Hy-Vee, Stalker Chevrolet, A & G Restaurant and Lounge, Jane Brown PT, Osceola Sentinel-Tribune, and Rumors in Mount Ayr. Gates open 6 p.m. June 24, with music beginning at 7 p.m., which is a later start than in years past.

“We’re starting later this year and going to finish later,” said Creston Parks and Recreation Board Member John Kawa. “We’re going to try to stay away from the

heat as much as we can.

It seems like in y e a r s p a s t , people w e r e n ’ t Kawa ready to go home when the bands were done, so we’re going to start a little later and stay a little later.”

Iowa’s new governor intends to run in 2018, release says DES MOINES (AP) — Kim Reynolds has made it semiofficial: She intends to run for governor of Iowa next year.

Reynolds ascended to the governor’s c h a i r from her post as lieutenant governor last m o n t h , Reynolds replacing Terry Branstad after his confirmation as U.S. ambassador to China. She’d been widely expected to run but had yet to make a formal announcement.

campaign organization said this Thursday: “The Governor and Lt. Governor intend to be candidates for Governor and Lt. Governor in 2018. A final decision and formal announcement will be made in the coming months.”

Her running mate would be the state’s acting lieutenant governor, Adam Gregg. She named him to replace her but only in an “acting” capacity in order to avoid any legal fight over her power.

Reynolds is originally from Clarke County, having attended Interstate 35 Schools and working in the Clarke County Treasurer’s Office.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump appeared to confirm Friday that he is under investigation for obstruction of justice, claiming that he is being investigated for firing FBI Director James Comey by the man who told him to do it.

In another tweet earlier Friday, Trump writes, “After 7 months of investigations & committee hearings about my ‘collusion with the Russians,’ nobody has been able to show any proof. Sad!” Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein submitted a widely circulated memo to the president last month raising concerns over Comey’s performance, but Trump later asserted that he had already made the decision himself to fire Comey.

The White House confirmed that Mueller was among the candidates Trump interviewed to replace Comey. A day later, Rosenstein appointed Mueller, who was at the helm of the FBI during the Sept. 11 attacks, as special counsel.

Friday’s tweets are the latest in a week of angry social media responses by the president over a report by The Washington Post that Mueller was looking into whether Trump obstructed justice.

In a series of statements on Twitter Thursday, Trump repeated his assertion that Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 campaign is a “WITCH HUNT” based on the “phony” premise of possible collusion between Russia and a cadre of Trump campaign associates.

The president complained the probe is unfair and wondered why his defeated Democratic opponent wasn’t getting the same scrutiny.

“Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russia are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?” he asked.

“They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story. Nice,” Trump wrote in his first tweet. “You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in Ameri-

can political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people! #MAGA.” The Twitter attacks came as Vice President Mike Pence hired a personal lawyer to represent him in the intensifying investigation.

Pence’s office confirmed he had retained Richard Cullen, a former Virginia attorney general and U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, to assist “in responding to inquiries” from Mueller.

Mueller’s investigation appeared to be reaching a broadening circle of current and former officials.

The Washington Post reported W e d n e s - Mueller day that the investigators were looking into possible obstruction of justice.

The newspaper noted Mueller had requested interviews with CIA Director Dan Coats, National Security Agency chief Michael Rogers and Richard Ledgett, the former NSA deputy director.

Recent news reports have suggested Trump sought all three officials’ help in pressuring FBI Director James Comey to drop his investigation into former National Security Adviser Mike Flynn.

Comey testified last week that he also felt pressured to drop the Flynn probe.

Comey said he believes Trump ultimately fired him Comey “because of the Russia investigation.”

Coats met behind closed doors for more than three hours Thursday with the Senate intelligence committee, which is conducting a separate investigation into Russian interference in the election.

Trump’s Twitter response followed days of intensifying criticism of Mueller from some conservatives who have charged the former FBI director and his team with political bias and have claimed his relationship to Comey and an earlier meeting with Trump amount to conflicts of interest.

A close Trump associate said this week the president was considering firing Mueller, although the White House later denied it.

Man dies after falling from houseboat at Burlington marina BURLINGTON (AP) — Authorities say a man has died after falling from his houseboat at a southeast Iowa river marina.

The Hawk Eye reports that 63-year-old Thomas Hoschek was pronounced dead at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington late Wednesday. He’d been taken there from Bluff Harbor Marina, which sits along the Mississippi River

in Burlington.

The cause of death has not been released. Authorities aren’t sure whether Hoschek accidentally fell or suffered a medical problem that caused him to fall into the water.

A witness reported seeing Hoschek fall about 2:20 p.m.

Wednesday and said he was pulled from the river by two firefighters between five and seven minutes later.

“It’s a bunch of seasoned musicians that have been together in several other projects,” Worden said.

“Because of the sound we achieve over different projects, it was suggested to us we do Bad Company.

It was a fan suggestion. It wasn’t something that was on our radar.”

Rock Steady is in its first year as a tribute band, but many of the band members have been playing together since the late ‘80s.

Worden said he’s spent hours and hours combing through of live performance videos of Bad Company, working to recreate not only the vocals, but also all of the band’s little nuances. That helps him and his band provide an authentic experience for the audience.

Women of Rock features sisters Barbara and Lisa Bowman recreating artists such as Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar and Heart. Women of Rock is backed by four Kansas City musicians.

“The venue is incredible, when you have a natural amphitheater like that with the setting,” Worden said.

“A real close second is the people. They’ve always treated us like royalty and went out of their way to make us feel welcome and enjoy the music put together. It’s been a great fanbase to deal with it. The people who run the event have been top notch.”

Money raised from the event will go towards several ongoing projects at Creston’s parks. One of the major projects is the McKinley Lake project, where park board members are trying to clean the water that goes into McKinley Lake.

Kawa said the project is now just 500 feet from Adams Street and, once completed, the water going into McKinley Lake will be much cleaner.

Other projects include improvements to shelter houses, installing more playground equipment at Taylor Park, improvements to VFW Field and improvements to the swimming pool.

“The park and rec board and the park committee, which is 20 wonderful people – all volunteers, nobody makes a nickle out of this deal – they work hard and we’re over $2.5 million into that park now,” Kawa said.

“Always want to thank the sponsors,” Kawa continued. “We couldn’t do anything without our sponsors. Some of the people have been there every year and are faithful to what we do. We’re trying to make the park a better place and I think we’ve shown that. If you like music, it’s a good time out.”

Adair County Sheriff

Hanna Rose Mauldin, 26, of Des Moines was charged with driving while barred, operating without a registration plate and inability to provide proof of financial liability 6 a.m. June 7 in Adair County.

According to an Adair County Sheriff’s report, officers were called to the 88-mile marker of Interstate 80 for a car in a ditch.

When officers arrived on scene, they observed a silver two-door car in the ditch on the east side of the off ramp of I-80 at the 88-mile marker. There were two people in the ditch looking for something. Officers made contact and the male advised Mauldin had swerved to miss a deer causing her to go into the ditch. Mauldin was identified as the driver. Officers ran Mauldin through the Springbrook state radio and were advised Mauldin was barred through Iowa for being a habitual violator. Mauldin admitted

she did not have a valid license.

Mauldin was charged for driving while barred. Mauldin was cited for failure to maintain control of her vehicle, operation without registration and no insurance.

Mauldin was being held on $2,000 bond.

CLUB NEWS Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, at the Windrow meeting room with 21 members and one guest. President Chris Eaton presided, Karen Norton gave the prayer and Chuck Taylor was the finemaster.

The program was given

by David Hargrove, Gibson Memorial Library director.

He discussed the new uses for the library, platforms for digital services and the children’s literacy programs.

The library is planning a capital campaign activity this fall at Graceland Cemetery. It will be a walk, which will highlight the history of past citizens laid to rest there.

The club presented the library with a $250 donation to help its programs in the community.

Members were thanked for helping install the Ron Levine memorial bench at Bill Sears Ballfields. There will be a presentation to Creston Little League at the bench at a later date in June.

A sign up sheet was sent out for members to help June 27 with Open Table.

CARSPA

Creston Area Retired School Personnel Association (CARSPA) held its meeting June 13 at the Del Richardson Conference Room at Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston.

Fifteen members were present.

Following breakfast, members enjoyed a presentation by Kennady Fry, a recent graduate of East Union Community School. Interesting facts and pictures from her 2015 and 2016 trips to Haiti were shared. She and other students spent their 10 days of each trip at an orphanage. While there, they helped construct an adapted Sukup bin that became a residence for some of the many orphans. Some of her stories were sad, some were happy and most were heartwarming.

A business meeting followed. The same officers were re-elected to serve for the next business year which starts in September.

The highlights of the May 17 District 4 meeting in Osceola were presented. The next meeting will be July 11.

The Book Club’s movie night showing “The Secret Garden,” met 6 p.m. May 1 at Retta Ripperger. Dorothy McNaught called the meeting to order and roll call was taken by saying a book members had read.

Officers were elected for next year that begins Sept.

Two visitors, Deb Richardson’s mother and daughter, were present. All but two members were present.

Ripperger served a large selection of refreshments including rhubarb pie.

The movie followed the main theme of the book, but there wasn’t time for some of the details. It was well done and enjoyed by all.

day evening, June 6, at the Pizza Ranch. Mike Duckworth, president, opened the meeting by leading the Pledge of Allegiance. The invocation was given by Delmer Brown.

Following the meal, Jerry Katzer introduced Chad Rieck, who is a member of the fundraising committee for the Union County Fair.

Rieck first made a report on the very successful tractor ride which took place June 3, sponsored by Creston Radio and other entities.

Then Rieck told about the capital campaign which is in progress to raise money for many improvements to Union County Fairgrounds in Afton. The buildings have been in use since about 1955. The fundraising committee has been planning two new buildings and organizing the capital campaign for 18 months. The proposed buildings will be (1) for swine and sheep with a show arena and will be 110 ft. by 240 ft. and (2) a cattle barn with show arena and will measure 100 ft. by 160 ft. They will provide a safe environment for both exhibitors and spectators. The fair board has received a DEKKO pledge of $500,000 towards new buildings on the fairgrounds and will assist in other ways with funds from their foundation. Individuals and organizations are also encouraged to donate funds. More information can be obtained from Rieck or go to the website www.unioncountyfairiowa. com.

Duckworth presided over the business meeting. He presented a pin to Stew Stewart for sponsoring a new member. A thank-you note was received from a person who received help getting hearing aids. The treasurer’s report was presented by Tom Braymen.

The secretary’s report was read by Jo Duckworth. Several members had taken down the old ceiling tiles in the church at the Historical Complex in preparation for new tiles. Volunteers signed up to help with bingo July 4 at McKinley Park. A meeting schedule for the board of directors was announced.

Delmer and Alice Brown reported they took care of the candy route. Dean Brant made some announcements.

Duckworths were thanked for their help with the club.

The next meeting of Creston Lions will be Aug. 1 at the Pizza Ranch. There will be no meeting in July.

There was a brief discussion of a possible service project for July. The president read a selection on Beta Sigma Phi traditions from the Book of Beta Sigma Phi and the business meeting adjourned.

Adams drafted IOWA CITY (AP) — The Houston Astros organization chose hard-hitting Iowa first baseman Jake Adams Tuesday in the sixth round of baseball’s freeagent draft.

The NCAA leader who smacked a Big Ten-record 29 homers while batting .335 for the Hawkeyes this spring is ready to start his professional baseball career.

“The plan is to get signed, get to rookie ball and get going,’’ Adams said.

Adams was one of two Hawkeyes to be drafted on Tuesday, selected by Houston with the 181st pick of the draft.

The position has a slot value of $249,600 and the junior who rewrote the record book during his only season at Iowa said he chose to forego his senior season of eligibility after discussing dollars with the Astros before he was selected on Tuesday afternoon.

Seven picks later, the Baltimore Orioles selected Iowa shortstop Mason McCoy. The senior from Washington, Illinois, batted .328 as part of a team which finished 39-22 and won the program’s first Big Ten tourney championship since the event started in 1981. His slot has a value of $235,700.

Adams is the Hawkeyes’ highest draft pick since Kansas City selected pitcher Wes Obermueller in the second round of the 1999 draft.

Before transferring to Iowa, Adams had a junior-college all-American career at Des Moines Area Community College.

Determined to work with an early lead, the Creston baseball team swung hot bats in the first two innings of its 7-4 win over Denison-Schleswig Thursday.

The win was Creston’s fourth in Hawkeye 10 play, and showcased what the top of the Panther lineup is capable of in short bursts.

Thursday’s twin billing was supposed to be played consecutively, but after the lightning postponement, the two teams agreed to play today (Friday) in Creston at 1:30 p.m.

Creston surged ahead in the first, cracking the scoreboard first when Kadon Hulett rewarded Cody Crawford’s triple by fishing low below his knees to knock a ball into center field for an RBI-single.

After Dustin Merritt walked, Beau Barncastle hit an infield single that was thrown away twice for two errors, allowing Hulett’s courtesy runner Rylan Luther to score, as did Merritt, for a 3-0 Panther lead.

“You always want to get out with that complete start and we did talk about that a little bit,” Creston coach Steve Birchard said. “But I don’t think that necessarily motivated everybody, but got some timely hits there and ran the bases well, ag-

gressively. I like to see that.”

After Hulett struck out two more of his six batters fanned in four innings of work on the mound, he came up with another big

hit at the plate again in the second.

With two runners on in the top of the ninth, pinch-hitter Kailey Pick struck the big blow of the game for Denison-Schleswig when she reached up for a high offering from LaMasters and sent it over the left field fence for a three-run homer and an 8-0 lead.

“I told our girls afterward, you never know what’s going to happen later in a game and that’s why you have to stay with it,” Creston coach Mike McCabe said. “We had two outs at 0-0 and they get a couple on that soft liner to first, and then that pinch-hitter comes in and tomahawks that high, inside pitch over the fence. I would have liked to have it kept at 5-0 going into that last inning because I liked how our offense responded and scored four runs there.

In the top of the third, Hulett found himself in trouble after walking one, allowing a single and hitting another batter.

He came out of the third having allowed only run when Crawford, trying to make a decision where to go with a groundball, dropped it.

Hulett got out of the frame with a 6-4-3 double play ball, with Brenden McDowell flipping to Luke Latham at second and on to first to end the threat.

Thursday marked the fourth time Hulett has pitched in a game this summer, and after rehabbing his throwing shoulder in the spring, he is still trying to find his comfort zone on the mound.

McKim says farewell to Creston, hello to Omaha

It’s not often that so many positive things emerge from a team’s 12th straight defeat, but such was the case after Creston’s 8-4 softball loss to Class 4A 14thranked Denison-Schleswig Thursday night.

The second game was postponed after multiple lightning delays and a thunderstorm warning for the area. It will be made up at 6 p.m. June 30 at Panther Field.

The Monarchs improved to 19-2 overall in winning their 11th straight game, and remain atop the Hawkeye 10 Conference at 10-1.

Atlantic also has one conference setback.

Creston fell to 4-15 and 3-8, and is playing without senior pitcher Cali Foglesong and junior catcher Chloe Hagle, both out indefinitely with injuries. Yet, the young Panther lineup was lodged in a 0-0 deadlock as freshman Kylee LaMasters was battling on even teams with Monarch sophomore hurler Sarah Heilesen in a 0-0 deadlock through four innings.

Denison-Schleswig got on the board in the fifth inning. With two outs and two runners on base, Kambrie Dau, the No. 9 batter in the order, hit a spinning looping liner toward first base. Creston’s Brielle Baker charged and leaned forward to make the catch, but the ball squirted out as Ana Rogers and Whitney Weiss raced home for the 2-0 lead.

After hearing news of Creston native educator and coach Ryan McKim’s coming departure, a sullen disposition was the norm for several of his colleagues over the past two days.

McKim announced in a post on Facebook he would be moving to Omaha, Nebraska for a variety of reasons, but spoke with the News Advertiser about what emotions and thinking he was going through during and after the decision-making process.

McKim, an environment and spatial technology teacher at Creston Community High School, head girls varsity basketball coach, co-head football coach and an assistant golf coach, will be someone whose McKim missing presence will be immediately felt.

The decision did not come easy.

“I’m extremely excited about the future and what’s going on but this being home and the individual kids, I’d leave somebody out if I started listing names,” McKim said. “Just the individual kids that I’ve had the opportunity to develop relationships with, they will continue, those relationships. The kids, they make it challenging.”

He finished his third year at Creston, his alma mater from the class of 2004, as a professional for three years after spending time coaching college football in various roles at Iowa State and Oklahoma.

He was a graduate assistant for the Cyclones, a special teams quality control coach for coach Bob Stoops and the Oklahoma Sooners. McKim has put in countless hours with young athletes, and his impact was felt by many in a short time.

of different ways but at the core of it I think coaching is coaching,” McKim said. “I love doing it here and obviously with this being home there’s an added dimension of purpose because you want to be proud of where you’re from.”

McKim noted he believed the timing was right for him, and thinking about the impact of his decision still weighed on his mind.

“At the end of the day I think you have to do what’s right for you and that’s what I’m doing,” McKim said.

“I’m really excited about what lies ahead, and the people here have been great and I knew they would be because that’s how they have been since I was just a little kid. Creston is just a great place.”

McKim was the relationships he has built once more while back in his hometown over the last few years are not the type to fizzle away.

“I’ll miss seeing those guys every day, but kids are resilient,” said McKim. “The kids that I have had success building relationships with know that just because I won’t be in town doesn’t mean that our relationship won’t continue.”

The News Advertiser will have updates concerning the next person to step into McKim’s coaching roles for Creston Community School District, as well as McKim’s next step in Omaha at a future date.

“When you get production like that and guys are getting on base that’s a good thing,” Birchard said. “We just need to start getting more of that at the bottom of the lineup and I think we are.”

Mara Weis receives prestigious international internship Students from Iowa and across the country will travel abroad this summer to gain real-world experience in STEM fields at international research centers, working to alleviate global hunger. n

AFTON – The World Food Prize Foundation announced it will send 24 high school students abroad for the Borlaug-Ruan internship program at renowned international research centers and NGOs this summer. The students hail from Iowa and 11 other states and will delve into issues related to global hunger and poverty during an eight-week, all-expenses-paid internship in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

ipate in the program. She is the daughter of Mark Weis and Gale Vert. Weis will spend her eight weeks working at the International Rice Research Institute in Los BaĂąos, Philippines.

The unique program, which was created by Dr. Norman Borlaug and John Ruan, Sr. in 1998, allows student interns to participate in projects with distinguished researchers at leading agricultural research centers around the globe. While getting a firsthand view of real and pressing food-security issues and nutrition problems in poverty-stricken areas, the students become an integral part of a project, spending time in the lab as well as days or weeks at a time in the field

conducting research and interviews and gathering data.

Interns are involved in a myriad of global projects dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger such as: fisheries and aquaculture studies; plant biotechnology research; micro-credit and the women’s self-help concept; the influence of education on household food security; livestock value chains and the calculation of vitamin C concentration in numerous potato varieties.

A prerequisite for the Borlaug-Ruan International Internship is attending the three-day World Food Prize Global Youth Institute which occurs each October. Youth Institute participants present research papers and interact with World Food Prize laureates and renowned experts to discuss issues relating to food security throughout the world.

Chris Soules has waived his right to a speedy trial and has requested that his trial be postponed.

Soules is charged with leaving the scene of a deadly crash and faces up to five years in prison if he’s convicted of

causing the April 24 crash that killed 66-year-old farmer Kenneth Mosher.

The Des Moines Register reports that attorneys for Soules said Wednesday they need at least a 90-day extension to obtain items from prosecutors and schedule depositions.
