Creston woman donates hair to cancer patient
Iowa official pitches stopgap health insurance solution DES MOINES (AP) — Iowa’s insurance commissioner is proposing a plan he thinks could keep Iowa from becoming the first state to lose all of its health care insurance carriers offering policies on the Affordable Care Act exchange next year. Doug Ommenn says he traveled to Washington last week with officials from two major Iowa insurance carriers to pitch a proposal to federal officials that would save the Iowa market from collapsing. Minnesota-based Medica is the only remaining statewide insurer on the ex-

When Marcia Stewart of Creston last got her hair cut, she knew exactly what she wanted to do. That was back in April or May of 2015. At the time, Stewart had her hair cut so she could donate it to cancer patients. Stewart’s plan was to let her hair grow again until it was long enough she could donate to cancer patients again. That time finally came Thursday, as Di Miller of 3’s Company in Creston cut 13 inches off Stewart’s hair to donate to Pantene Beautiful Lengths.
Stewart is unable to attend this weekend’s Relay for Life event at Creston Community High School, so donating her hair in the days leading up to the event was just one way she could give back and promote cancer awareness. “This is the second time I’ve done it,” Stewart said. “It’s just sort of my way to help out. Working with early childhood, I had one little girl who had went through the whole treatment, back when it wasn’t as popular to wear scarves and stuff, and so I just started doing it then, years ago.” Stewart said she chose Pantene Beautiful Lengths because the pro-
gram provides wigs made from donated hair to cancer patients for free. Other programs, such as Locks of Love, charge wig recipients for the wigs. According to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths website, its partnership with the American Cancer Society has resulted in 42,000 real-hair wigs being donated to the American Cancer Society’s Wig Bank. Donated hair through Pantene Beautiful Lengths must be at least 8 inches in length and cannot be chemically treated or colored. Stewart has always gone to Miller for hair cuts, although “they’re more like

trims!” she quipped, since it has been more than two years since her last cut. For Miller, a breast cancer survivor, being involved in Stewart’s hair donation was important. “I was fortunate enough I didn’t have to have chemo, so I didn’t lose my hair,” Miller said. “But I have worked, since I became a cosmetologist, with people who have lost hair, including my mother. This is just my way to help out. I know what people have gone through. I’ve had several customers who have (donated). It’s just something I really, really am very fortunate to WIG | 2A
change and has said it will drop out if changes aren’t made. Ommenn’s plan reallocates federal subsidies currently used to lower costs for older participants to entice younger people into the insurance market and uses federal reinsurance dollars to help insurers absorb highcost claims. Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield has committed to selling insurance in all 99 Iowa counties next year if the plan is approved. Without approval, Ommenn says Medica will drop out and 72,000 Iowans will be uninsured next year.
Sessions to testify as Republicans prod Trump on tapes WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Jeff Sessions is preparing to face former Senate colleagues over his role in the controversy around ties between the Trump campaign and Russia, part of an escalating investigation into possible Russian meddling in the 2016 elections.
Sessions is scheduled to testify Tuesday before the Senate Intelligence committee and was due for sharp questioning. It is not yet known whether the hearing will be public or closed. “I urge that the committee hold a hearing with the TAPES | 2A
