Free fishing for all residents this weekend
Despite Trump, cleaner energy growth expected to carry on WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump may abandon U.S. pledges to reduce carbon emissions that contribute to global warming, but that step seems unlikely to stall the push to adopt cleaner forms of energy. Around the world, coalfired power plants are being shuttered as governments and private companies invest billions in wind turbines and solar farms. Even in regions of the U.S. where coal is plentiful, electric utilities are increasingly shifting to cheaper,

This weekend is free fishing weekend across the state of Iowa. The event, put on by Iowa’s Department of Natural Resources, will run Friday through Sunday and allows Iowa residents of all ages to fish without a license. The goal of the weekend is to build support and interest in the sport. Anglers typically need a fishing license in order to fish. “The idea is that you’re going to take somebody out there who may not want to buy a license yet but is willing to try it,” said Union County C o n s e r - Carlton
vation Officer Corey Carlton. Carlton welcomes the idea of a weekend to potentially get more residents a chance to find a new hobby or passion. “Get them kind of hooked, get them to catch a couple fish and have a good time, and at some point they might turn into license buyers.” The profit from fishing licenses goes towards Iowa’s DNR Fisheries Bureau to produce and stock more than 160 million fish annually, construct fish habitats, improve water quality and restore lakes with a history of poor fishing and improve access for anglers. Union County is home to a number of lakes, some of which already have boat trailers lined up in anticipation. “Twelve Mile today, FISHING | 2A
Local anglers qualify for regional tournament By CARTER ECKL CNA staff reporter ceckl@crestonnews.com
Two local anglers qualified for a regional tournament after placing in the Nebraska Federation Tournament at the Lake of the Ozarks. Tyler Wolf and Dr. John Thomsen both qualified for the regional tournament, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. The tournament consisteted of approximately 130 other anglers. Wolf and Thomsen have been competing in fishing tournaments since the early 1990’s. The details of the regional tournament have not been announced so anglers can’t get a leg up on the competition. This keeps competitors from being able to scout out the best places to find and catch fish before the tournament begins. “The next one will be next spring, don’t even know the date of it yet, don’t know the location, only know that its out of 19 states,” said Wolf. “We assume it will be somewhere between Minnesota, Iowa, Texas and Kentucky,” said Thomsen. Not only did they qualify, but they will be paid for ANGLERS | 2A

Audit: Leader of Iowa school meals group embezzled for years DAVENPORT (AP) — The former executive director of an Iowa nonprofit that promotes healthy, affordable school meals allegedly embezzled at least $169,000 over a 5-year period. A state audit report released Thursday says Norma LaMantia admitted to depositing checks meant for the School Nutrition Association of Iowa in personal bank accounts. LaMantia told auditors and a Davenport police detective last month that the money helped pay her
personal expenses and support her addiction to casino gambling. The checks came from school districts and food companies to pay fees associated with association events. Scott County Attorney Mike Walton said Thursday his office is reviewing the report to determine “what the appropriate action is as far as criminal charges.” LaMantia had been the association’s executive director for a decade before resigning under pressure last year.
