people viewed the monuments was silent gratitude. It wasn’t big displays of emotion or anything, but you could see how touched each of the members was as they could see the monuments erected for those wars.” Saturday proved to be a long day for the Union County veterans who made the trip, boarding their flight in Fort Dodge at 5 a.m., touring nonstop through Washington, D.C., flying back to Fort Dodge and then returning to Creston about 4 a.m. Sunday. Upon arriving at Dulles
International Airport in Washington, D.C., veterans on the Honor Flight were greeted at the airport by a crowd of supporters. “For me, the most impressive experience was when we got off the plane and going through the airport and being greeted by the large groups of people,” said Gary O’Daniels of Creston, a Vietnam War veteran. “There were adults and kids clapping and cheering. They had signs that said ‘Welcome home veterans.’ It brought tears to my eyes.” That was a new experience for many of the

in Washington. The congressional testimony Monday from Yates, an Obama administration holdover fired soon after for other reasons, marked her first public comments about the concerns she raised and filled in basic details about the chain of events that led YATES | 2A

being asked whether he accepts donations from outside his district. He said before leaving the room, “I mean, he’s going to sit here and just, and just badger me. Unbelievable.” The question about donations followed reporter Josh Scheinblum asking Blum why he requires audience members at his town hall meetings for identification. Blum said audience members are vetted to ensure they are from his district. Blum was met by an angry crowd at his town hall meeting later Monday.
