Eckl joins CNA newsroom staff

Structure fire: Union County Sheriff Deputy Brian Burkhalter assesses the situation Saturday afternoon at a structure fire

located 306 N. Elm St. in Creston. According to a Creston Fire report, firefighters were paged for a fully engulfed garage at 11:42 a.m. Saturday. After arriving on scene, firefighters confined and extinguished the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Estimated loss to the building owned by Dale Kessler and occupied by Ian Adamson was $15,000. According to a Creston Police report, Ian Michael Keith Adamson, 30, and Ronnee Colleen Abel, 37, both of Creston, were charged with trespassing, injury or damage greater than $200, 11:30 a.m. Saturday at 306 N. Elm St. According to the Creston Police report, Adamson and Abel were at the property without permission and, during that time, the property caught on fire. Both Adamson and Abel were being held in Union County Jail on $1,000 bond.

Carter Eckl has joined the Creston News Advertiser staff as staff reporter, covering the city beat and writing features. Eckl, 23, is from Asheville, North Carolina. “I’m really excited to be here, and excited to really explore the Midwest,” Eckl said. Eckl attended the journalism program at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. He previously worked for five Eckl months as videographer for high school football for Storied Rivals in Zanesville, Ohio. In his spare time, Eckl

enjoys watching baseball and college football, hiking, reading nonfiction about sports and history, watching TV shows like “Suits” and watching standup comedy. Eckl has a younger sister attending the University of Missouri in Columbia. His mother lives in North Carolina and his father lives in Tennessee. Eckl started as staff reporter Friday. He is single and living in Creston. “I’m excited to get to work at a local newspaper and write about the homey, small-town life of Creston,” Eckl said. Quilt of Valor Korean War veteran receives surprise Quilt of Valor

that,” said Woods. “He’s such a big part of our building and has been for so long – we wanted to do that for him.” Woods’ daughter read “A Quilt for Mr. Mac,” a short story written by Woods’ mother, Phyllis Kaldenberg. The story is about a young girl who helps her grandmother make a Quilt of Valor for her friend, Mr. Mac. Clark was presented with the Quilt of Valor following the short story. Clark couldn’t hold back his emotions once presented with the quilt. The surprise was such that Clark couldn’t fully express his gratitude following the commemoration. Before classes let out Friday afternoon, Creston Community Early Childhood Center held an assembly to honor Bob Clark, a substitute teacher in the building. However, Clark was unaware of this fact. Before he knew it, Clark was surprised with a Quilt of Valor for his service in the Korean War. Amanda Woods, secretary of ECC, was behind the surprise setup. “We thought he deserved
