American Legion closed Ted Cruz ends his bid for for business Republican nomination INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Texas Sen. Ted Cruz ended his presidential campaign Tuesday, eliminating the biggest impediment to Donald Trump’s march to the Republican nomination. The conservative tea party firebrand who cast himself as the only viable alternative to Trump announced his exit after a stinging defeat in Indiana’s Republican primary. “It appears that path has been foreclosed,” Cruz told supporters in Indianapolis. “Together, we left it all on the field of Indiana. We gave it everything we’ve got, but the voters chose another path, and so with a heavy heart but with boundless op-

timism for the longterm future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign.” Cruz had Cruz already been mathematically eliminated from clinching the delegate majority in the stateby-state primary process, but hoped to force a contested national convention in July. That possibility ends Tuesday with the Texas senator’s announcement. Had he succeeded in his CRUZ | 2A

n Monday, a change to the face of Creston’s nightlife became official when the former headquarters of the American Legion Post 70 closed its doors for good. The building at 119 N. Walnut St. was home to the Legion for more than three decades and had come to be one of the goto hot spots for Crestonians to gather together and unwind on weekends. The Legion was forced to close not because of a

lack of popularity among patrons, but by economic hardships shared by small businesses across the country over the past several years. Three-time Post Commander and current Post Adjutant Bill Shallenberger said a steep decline in member participation in recent years made upkeep and operation of the building unmanageable. “Over the past several years, you’d have maybe four to five people show up for meetings and usually those would be the officers,” Shallenberger said. “In the past, there were times when we would have 50 or 60 people at meetings.” In addition to handling administrative duties of the American Legion chapter, Shallenberger was also the bar manager. For many Crestonians

young and old, the Legion was a staple of weekend life, giving them the chance to unwind with cold drinks, karaoke and live music without breaking the bank. Despite the hefty expenses that came with all of this, customers were only charged a cover fee a single time. Festivities at the building are not a thing of the past altogether, though. Soon, locals will once again be gathering under the same familiar roof but with a new name and new look. After some remodeling of the building’s interior features are complete, new owners Steve and Rebecca Colburn will be opening Colburn’s Corner Saloon, a western-themed bar. The Saloon plans to carry on the traditions of karaoke and live bands and the addition of a kitchen. The opening of the Saloon is

2016 Iowa’s Best Burger named at The Chuckwagon AMES – The 2016 Iowa’s Best Burger has been found in Adair at The Chuckwagon Restaurant. The Chuckwagon embraces the rich history of Adair through its restaurant and menu offerings. The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association (ICA) and the Iowa Beef Industry Council (IBIC) announced the winner Monday during a live broadcast in Adair. The two organizations have teamed up to sponsor Iowa’s Best Burger contest seven times. This year, Iowans submitted more than 6,000 votes nom-

inating 311 restaurants in February and March. Those votes were used to select the top 10 restaurants. The top 10 were then independently visited and judged based on the hamburger’s taste, appearance and proper serving temperature of 160 degrees. “The judges found that the burgers at the Chuckwagon were juicy and full of flavor,” said Brooke German, director of marketing for IBIC. “They use a toasted bun on every burger, and their ADAIR | 2A
