Alliant Energy discusses rate increase at public meeting By HILARY FERRAND OST news editor hferrand@osceolaiowa.com

Avenue of flags: American flags wave in the breeze Monday morning at Graceland Cemetery. The flags, which

were installed by Creston firefighters, lined the many roads and walkways at the cemetery and fluttered in the wind during the Memorial Day service.

OSCEOLA — The Iowa Utilities Board held a public comment meeting Wednesday in Osceola regarding a proposed base rate increase by Alliant Energy-Interstate Power and Light Company (Alliant-IPL). The new rates would raise residential bills an average of 12.5 percent, or $14.26 per month, and commercial rates an average of 11.6 percent, or $33.04 per month. Though few people attended, comments were equally split in support and in opposition of the request.

Creston retiree Karen Walter said the increase is too large and comes at a time when many expenses are on the rise. “Our property taxes have gone up, our water and sewer have gone up ... and now this is going up 12.5 percent. Maybe it would be more palatable if it was, say, 4 or 5, but 12.5 is a lot,” said Walter. “I know $14 doesn’t sound like a lot, but Social Security is not going to raise my monthly amount by 12.5 percent.” Woodburn resident Bob Nixon agreed and called Alliant to task on recent RATES | 2A

WASHINGTON (AP) — A top White House communications staffer has resigned as President Donald Trump considers a major staff overhaul. The departure of Michael Dubke, Trump’s communications director, comes as aides say Trump has grown increasingly frustrated by allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 election and revelations of possible ties between his campaign and Moscow. Trump tweeted Tuesday: “Russian officials must be

laughing at the U.S. & how a lame excuse for why the Dems lost the election has taken over the Fake News.” Dubke wrote in a statement that it had been an honor to serve Trump and “my distinct pleasure to work side-by-side, day-byday with the staff of the communications and press departments.” Dubke’s last day has not yet been determined. A Republican consultant, Dubke joined the White TRUMP | 14A
