Union County Engineer Zach Gunsolley brought forth a communications issue during the Union County Board of Supervisors meeting held Monday at the boardroom in the courthouse. Gunsolley said there are several pieces of equipment that need replacing. According to Graham Jaksich, communications consultant with Electronic Engineering, there are

After getting permission — and $0 in funding for the work — Reynolds enlisted the help of family and friends in removing the wall, subsequently improving department efficiency and expanding the services available to the people of Clarke County.

“It’s crazy the things you can do in rural Iowa where people take care of you,” said Reynolds, and in Osceola, she has an overabundance. Local Republican Mary Ellen Kimball has been a longtime supporter of Reynolds, serving as her representative on the County Compensation Board and then in various capacities as she advanced in politics. “We admired each other; we worked well together,”

Jennifer Jean Hartley, 43, of Thayer was sentenced to up to 47 years in prison in her sentencing h e a r i n g Hartley Thursday at the Union County courthouse. Hartley pleaded guilty to seven various charges to avoid a first-degree murder charge. The sentences of the seven charges will run consecutively on suggestion of the state. The charges stem from Hartley’s involvement in the murders of Loretta Dillinger and Michael Robinson, as well as an arson charge and subsequent fraudulent insurance claim charge. Union County Attorney Tim Kenyon was satisfied with the judge’s final deci-

sion. “The state’s feeling is that the sentence was appropriate and, really, the court laid out the entire circumstance,” said Kenyon. “This was not merely one event. This was a series of events, which ultimately culminated in (Loretta’s) death.” The series of events dates back to about September 22, 2015, when, according to court documents, Jerry Ray Dillinger shot and killed Loretta and Michael Robinson. The state argued that a murder may not have occurred if Hartley did not provide Jerry with a weapon. Jerry was a convicted criminal; therefore, he could not legally purchase a firearm. According to court documents, Hartley provided Jerry with her pistol knowing his intent to kill. The judge addressed Hartley’s version of the acts of the crime and showed little compassion for her story. “Quite honestly, when I began reading your version

OSCEOLA — The atmosphere at the Clarke County 4-H Fairgrounds Event Center Thursday night was nothing short of electric as Gov. Kim Reynolds’ friends, family and neighbors waited for Iowa’s first female governor to arrive. “The enthusiasm is real,” said Ray Gasser of Adams County, who ventured out with his wife Elaine to congratulate Reynolds. “She’s the right one to be the first.” The majority of people packing the event center knew Reynolds from school or during the 14 years she worked in the Clarke County Treasurer’s Office. Gasser know Reynolds from her time as a Senator. “She’s great to work with,” he said. One look around the event center was enough to drive the point home. Lines formed as people waited for a chance to give Reynolds a hug or a handshake, to wish her well and let her know how proud her community is to see her succeed. Many of those in attendance had first-hand experience working with Reynolds at one time or another. “We were in Republican Women with her together for years,” said Sharon Dunfee. “She always had that wonderful bubbly personality. We pretty much knew she would do any-
