When Emily Robinson received word from Purdue University, she cried. It wasn’t out of disappointment but joy – and a little disbelief. The work she had put in at Creston High School, Alpha Omega Academy and Southwestern Community College had paid off in the form of a full ride to study computer engineering at Purdue. At age 17, a year ahead of her classmates, Emily graduated high school this month. At the same time, she graduated with honors

sociate of Science degree. This fall, she will begin her studies at Purdue. “Since I’ve been little, teachers noticed I was a bit more advanced, I guess,” said Emily of Creston. “When I was in first grade, they started me in TAG (Talented and Gifted), and then eventually, I accelerated in math. It was just that I would get bored in classes.”

Skipping seventh grade When Emily was in sixth grade at Creston Middle School, her TAG teacher thought Emily should accelerate, meaning skip a grade.

“They tested her in sixth grade, and she scored a 76 out of 80, and the AEA (American Evaluation Association) said that was the highest score they could remember up to that point,” said Bill Robinson, Emily’s father. “The middle school principal thought she should go ahead and take the ACT test because he thought she could probably go to college.” With her test scores, Emily skipped seventh grade and was encouraged to take the ACT. “(The principal) really wanted Emily to start high school from sixth grade, but we like her,” Bill said. “We figured losing one year was going to be tough enough. Losing two years was going to be not acceptable to us. So, we said she’s not going to college or to high school yet because we still wanted her to be a kid.” Skipping one grade was

pursuit. Officers attempted to block Farlow from exiting the alleyway, which he eluded. Creston Police and Union County Sheriff’s officers began a pursuit to attempt to stop Farlow, who reached speeds in excess of 70 mph in a 25-mph zone within city limits. In the 600 block of North Vine Street, in the east alleyway, Farlow was eluding officers driving south and proceeded to hit the vehicle of a sheriff’s deputy with his own with the intent to continue eluding. Farlow was taken into custody on scene. Farlow was also seen driving recklessly Friday in Creston, according to Creston Police Chief Paul Ver Meer. Farlow was being held awaiting bond hearing.

challenging enough, Emily said. She wouldn’t have been capable of skipping two grades and beginning high school. “I’d already figured out my friend group in my grade before, and then when I jumped a grade ... it took me a while to figure out where I fit,” Emily said. “There was a little bit of adversity to overcome, but it was worth EMILY | 2A
