Iowans have seen firsthand how impaired driving can affect a community, namely when Benjamin Beary of Knoxville crashed head-on into a police vehicle in Des Moines, killing himself, two police officers and a prisoner in April. Impaired driving is one of the leading causes of fatal traffic accidents, according to the Iowa Department of Public Safety. “Drunk driving, most people assimilate that with alcohol, but it can be other things,” said Creston Police Officer Shannon Arends. “You can be impaired from numerous other illegal or prescription-type drugs.”
Impairment “I think (impairment) is a problem in any county,” said Adams County Sheriff Alan Johannes. “I don’t think it’s limited to Adams County. I think it’s everywhere.” According to the United State Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 2003 and 2012, 968 people were killed in accidents involving a drunk driver in Iowa. And, in 2012, the majority of people who were killed by a drunk driver in Iowa were between the ages of 21 and 34.
“A LOT of people have the misconception that impaired or drunk driving just applies to alcohol and it does not.”

However, there are other ways to drive impaired. “A lot of people have the misconception that impaired or drunk driving just applies to alcohol and it does not,” Arends said. “In Creston, unfortunately, it is one of the things that we deal with quite frequently.” A common impairment substance is a prescription drug. “Another thing we see commonly is people using alcohol with prescription drugs. Prescription drugs can intensify the effects of alcohol,” Arends said. “If one consumes alcohol with a prescription drug that may intensify the effects, you could exhibit the greater impairment state than if you were consuming just straight alcohol.” Arends said in Creston, between 20 and 30 percent of those charged with operating while intoxicated are IMPAIR | 2A
