Southwestern’s Board of Trustees holds May meeting The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of directors met 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, in the SWCC Administration Center for its regular monthly board meeting.

A public hearing was held for the replacement of the gymnasium floor in the Student Center. No oral or written objections or petitions were heard or submitted.

Virginia Kirk, 82, of Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, formerly of rural Lorimor, passed away May 16, 2017, and rejoined her loving husband, Ben. Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 27, at Ochilt r e e Funeral Home, 1823 N. J o h n Kirk Wayne Dr., in Winterset. On Aug. 11, 1951, Virginia was united in marriage to Benjamin Francis Kirk at the Madison County Courthouse, and after Ben served his country honorably in the United States Army Corps, they settled in rural Madison County where they lived on the family farm for the next 50 years. Virginia was a homemaker, farmwife and farmhand depending on the day and

She was an amazing cook and loved to cook, whether it was for five or 50, she was always up for the challenge, never running out of food. She was a great seamstress and enjoyed quilting. She loved her family and loved to hold the little ones. In later years, she and Ben enjoyed watching the Hawkeyes and Cyclones.

She had been a member of the Eastern Star in Lorimor.

Left to cherish Virginia’s memory are her sons, Nelson Craig (Cindy Jo) Kirk of Story City, Michael Benjamin Kirk of Marshalltown and Douglas Eugene (Linda) Kirk of Murray; grandchildren, Kami Kirk (Bill) Thomas, Jennifer Kirk (Bruce) Marsh, Justin (Jackie) Kirk, Kellee Kirk (Ralph Torres) Hernandez, Ragan Kirk Victor, Kinzee Kirk (Matthew) Mashek, Benjamin (Veronica) Kirk and Stefanie (Kevin) Mullins; great-grandchildren, Anna Thomas, Sophie Thomas, Shelbie Marsh, Dalton Marsh, Hope Marsh, Steven Marsh, Ella Marsh, Danielle Mashek, Layla Kirk, Lilly Victor, Eli Victor, Ella Victor, Caleb Kirk, Jose Hernandez and Isiah Hernandez; sister Doris Jackson of Grimes; many nieces, nephews, cousins and all of the Kirk family.

In death, she rejoins her parents, Benjamin and Dola; siblings, Sara Gunter, Eugene Hircock, Marion Ragan, Benjamin Ragan, Delbert Ragan and George Ragan and daughter-in-law Karen Kaye Kirk.

On Nov. 29, 1944, she married Hurley Powell from Redding. After World War II ended, they lived in Brooklyn, New York, for two years until they relocated to rural Redding. It was there, then rural Clearfield and finally, rural Blockton, they worked together on their farm operation.

Virginia is survived by her son Dennis Powell (special friend Susan Padilla) of Sterling, Illinois; daughter Donna (Jim) Pedersen of Mount Ayr; grandson Clint (Courtney) Bowen of Winterset; granddaughter Jennifer Morrison of Midland, Texas; great-grandchildren, Jayden Morrison, Colton Bowen, Tyler Bowen and Tinsley Bowen and sisters-in-law, Shirley Woollums and Pauline Crussell.

Virginia was preceded in death by her father and mother; sister Carolyn (Hurley); sisters-in-law, Leona Bolinger, Lois Austin, Lela Brown, Alice Reimer and Ruth Cavender and brothers-in-law, Dale Powell, Everett Bolinger, George Austin, Howard Brown, Gene Reimer and Pete Cavender.

Judge denies inmate’s request for DNA testing in 2000 death CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) — A judge has rejected an inmate’s request to order new DNA testing in the 2000 slaying of a Cedar Rapids woman, a crime he insists he didn’t commit.

Bill Taylor, SWCC vice president of instruction, spoke to the board about the college entering into a new agreement for a joint construction project between the college and Sonntag Development, LLC. This would be the second year the college has partnered with Sonntag Development. With this agreement in place, the carpentry and building trades program would build a duplex on property owned

by Sonntag Development, and located in Cottonwood Estates in Creston. With the details of this contract, Sonntag Development carries expenses of the project during the construction pe-

riod, again allowing students to complete required lab experience without the college incurring the expenses and risk associated with building. The board approved the building partnership contract with Sonntag Development, LLC. During the president’s report, Dr. Barb Crittenden, SWCC president, reminded the board of spring commencement 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 12, and informed the board summer commencement will be held 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 30. Both ceremonies will be held in the Student Center gymnasium.

Crittenden also told the board the athletic department’s annual golf fundraiser will be held Saturday, May 27, at Crestmoor Golf Club in Creston.

Following the president’s report, Jerry Smith, SWCC board member from Osceola and also SWCC’s Iowa Association of Community College Trustees (IACCT) representative, reported on the recent IACCT board meeting. Smith reminded the board of the summer IACCT Conference, to be held July 19-21, in Davenport.

At the request of diplomats from the U.S., Japan and South Korea, a United Nations’ Security Council consultation on the missile test is to take place Tuesday.

North Korea a week earlier successfully tested a new midrange missile — the Hwasong 12 — that it said could carry a heavy nuclear warhead.

Experts said that rocket flew higher and for a longer time than any other missile previously tested by North Korea and represents another big advance toward a viable ICBM. David Wright, an expert on North Korea’s missiles and nuclear program with the Union of Concerned Scientists, said the latest missile could have flown farther but was fired on a “lofted” trajectory, which sends the missile high up so that it will land in the open seas rather than flying over or splashing down near neighboring countries.

He noted the Pukguksong-2’s solid fuel is of particular concern.

Solid-fuel missiles have their fuel loaded in them before being moved into place, allowing them to be launched faster and with more secrecy. Liquid-fuel missiles, on the other hand, are generally fueled at the launch site in a process that can last an hour and requires fueling and other vehicles. That makes them easier to spot and easier to destroy.

38, 313 N. Walnut St. was charged with possession of a controlled substance 3 a.m. today at Wal-Mart.

According to a Creston Police report, Goodson was the passenger in a vehicle that the odor of marijuana was detected. Goodson was found in possession of marijuana and a metal pipe.

Goodson was being held on $1,000 bond.

—————— Michael Vincent Cihak, 35, of Afton was charged with third offense operating while intoxicated and possession of a concealed weapon.

According to a Creston Police report, a traffic stop was conducted on a vehicle being driven by Cihak. Cihak had an odor of alcohol coming from his person and admitted to drinking at the East Montgomery Street Pub. Cihak consented to standard field sobriety tests which indicated impairment. Cihak refused a preliminary breath test and DataMaster Testing. Cihak was charged with third offense operating while intoxicated or subsequent offense, a Class D felony. Cihak was in possession of a loaded firearm found in his pants pocket. Cihak was charged with carrying a concealed firearm while under the influence of alcohol. Cihak was also cited for an open container found inside the vehicle.

Justice Guy Myers, 19, of Villisca was charged with possession of a controlled substance 9:35 p.m., May 15 in Adams County.

According to an Adams County Sheriff report, deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle operated by Myers. Upon further investigation Myers was being held on $1,000 bond.

DES MOINES — When Spencer shot putter Brandi Botcher threw her sixth throw short of 42 feet, Creston’s Hannah Hood knew she had won.

The Creston senior thrower turned toward assistant coach Maggie Arnold with a look of pure joy and amazement. She knew with the two best shot putters having completed their last attempt, her launch of 42-4, on her fifth attempt, would stand the test of the rest of the field.

After throwing her sixth and final time, she ran over to Arnold and hugged her as tears came to both of their eyes.

Hood could hardly believe it afterward.

Her best throw helped her to capture the Class 3A crown Friday at Drake Stadium.

“Honestly it’s an amazing feeling. I didn’t ever know

if this was possible,” Hood said, still red in the face from tears she shed hugging family, teammates and coaches. “I’ve been through so much with my shoulder.

After my second one (surgery), I didn’t know how throwing was going to go.

Honestly I’m just on top of the world. It’s insane to me, state champ. It’s what I’ve wanted for four years.”

Hood led the field going into the finals, with seven other throwers vying to pass her toss of 40-3.

She bested her farthest attempt on her fourth throw, launching the shot 41-0.5.

At that point, Hood possessed the two best throws, as soft sprinkling rain and a light wind continued to blow through the field directly outside of Drake Stadium.

Botcher came back and hurled a throw 41-4.25 to take the lead on her fifth attempt.

But it was Hood’s day.

Hood came right back and launched her best throw ever in state competition at

Drake Stadium. She threw the shot 42-4, besting her sixth and fifth-place finishes in her sophomore and junior years, respectively.

She didn’t even have to watch the ball come down.

Hood knew it was her best.

“I know it’s a couple inches and I can throw a couple inches,” Hood said. “I personally wanted a 42 out of today. That was my goal.

Especially in this weather.

That was it. I was going to throw 42 no matter what.

I did and I’m so glad I did when I did and like I said, it’s an amazing feeling.”

DES MOINES — For the second time in the race, Emma Harper found herself boxed in.

While it wasn’t ideal for the time, the East Union 800 runner knew she could close out a mid-distance race as well as anyone in the state.

So when Harper made her move to the outside with around 300 meters to go, she felt the effects of her years of training kick in.

“Going into that straightaway after that second lap I got boxed in again, which hurt me because that’s usually where I kick it in,” Harper said. “Mostly what I ended up having to do was get out almost to (lane) three to get out, which is a bummer, I hate getting out that far, but have to do it sometimes.”

Coming down the final 200 after passing the Drake Stadium video board in the far corner of the stadium, Harper kicked into gear.

“I remember running down to the 200 and saying ‘Emma, this is the last 200 you’re ever going to run in a race. You better get going.

Give it everything you’ve got.’ So right here I started kicking as hard as I could,”

Harper said. “One hundred (meters), I just found that second gear. Every runner has a second gear. You just have to find it.”

Harper ran a personal best time of 2:22.40 as she took home the Eagles’ best finish at the meet. Harper also anchored East Union’s fourth-place distance medley relay team.

Creston’s intensity was solid for most of the 80 minutes during Friday’s Hawkeye 10 boys soccer match against Glenwood.

But a late goal before intermission deflated the Panthers’ spirits.

Creston never could find the rhythm it needed in the second 40 minutes and Glenwood found enough gaps in the Panther defense to secure a 3-1 win.

The Panthers took the early lead in the first 20 minutes. Creston had a quality

possession down the right wing and sent a nice cross in on goal. The initial shot was blocked by Glenwood’s keeper, but Evan Jacobson was there to bury the rebound.

“We had the right tempo,” said Creston coach Lucian Diaconu.

Glenwood, though, took advantage of a Creston mistake shortly before halftime.

The Rams netted the tying goal in the 35th minute from Ignacio Vadillo.

The Rams’ goal deflated the Panthers.

“Once we committed that mistake and got punished for it, we lost the tempo,” Diaconu said.

Glenwood’s goal changed Creston’s mindset going into halftime.

“I was planning to have a

different speech at halftime and we had to change it,” Diaconu said.

Creston had some quality possession in the second half, but could not put many solid shots on net.

“They were countering,” Diaconu said.

Glenwood’s defense was a big reason for that.

“We were not able to adapt to their defense in time to tie the game,” Diaconu said.

Somers’ season comes to an end Panther senior now set to take game to next level

ATLANTIC — Creston/ Orient-Macksburg’s Kyle Somers sat in the clubhouse of the Atlantic Golf & Country Club.

Somers anxiously awaited to see what the scores would be, as family and friends sitting around the table wanting to know as well.

As the scores trickled in, the result for the day was not going to be what Somers, coaches Jon Thomson and Ryan McKim and Panther backers were hoping for.

Somers finished with an 81 and did not advance to this week’s state tournament.

Jayden Brady of Bondurant-Farrar claimed the final individual qualifying spot with a 77.

The frustration and disappointment after several hours playing on a cold, wet and soggy track at Atlantic showed on Somers’ face.

“He’s been wanting this for a long time and to not shoot the way he wanted to shoot, it’s going to hurt,” said Creston/Orient-Macks-

burg coach Jon Thomson. “I feel his pain for that.”

Somers had played the course recently and done well.

The shots that were on point in the practice round evaded him Friday.

“I went here not too long ago and shot a 70 with a dad and my brother,” Somers said.

Somers’ putts were off by the smallest fraction of margins.

Those misses ended up being the difference.

“None of my putts would fall,” Somers said. “All my lines were off, just couldn’t make any putts.”

Somers showed signs, but putting it all together was a challenge.

“It was just a few misses,” Thomson said. “He wasn’t shooting bad, he was just missing a little bit on his iron shots, on his putts. He didn’t get off the tee box as well as he normally does.

Hood was a state champion at the state middle school meet that she competed in years ago. Being at the top of her game that early led to incredible expectations for herself and from others.

Coach Clay Arnold said it had been “five years in the making.”

He always had the confidence in her to achieve this.

Arnold was able to reflect on what the experience was like afterward. With Hood being Creston’s first state champion since Audrey Bolinger in the 400 hurdles in 2012, Arnold was in awe.

“When the Spencer girl and the second girl in the finals went ahead of her for the first time, so for the first time she wasn’t leading, when she came right back and two throws after her, her very next throw, and unloaded, that was a big moment,” Arnold said. “Because in the past, she would not have been able to go ahead and take an opportunity like that and finish it. That was pretty special. That’s when I really started thinking about all the setbacks and stuff.”

Friday afternoon’s performance was the culmination of years of work. Hood hit the weights hard last offseason, tacking on loads of hours, including on the weekend.

After the completion of the finals, she shared a special moment with Creston educator and coach Casey Tanner, who leads lifting sessions at the school.

Hood was not focused on the less than ideal elements around her Friday. She was worried about what she

could control.

“Everyone has to compete in the same weather.

You just gotta go out there and compete,” Hood said. “I think I needed to take more time in the ring this time instead of just calming myself down it was just, needed to take more time and more of what I needed to do rather than worry about the weather conditions.”

nity High School commons over the years. She has fantasized about adding to the hardware, honoring the best athletes to ever perform for the Panthers.

Now, she will be immortalized alongside the Creston legends.

“I did everything that I could to get here,” Hood stated. “This is what I wanted.”

Not up to standards Creston’s relay season came to an end early Friday, as none of the relay events Creston qualified for state performed near their season’s best times.

The 4x800 relay finished 17th in senior Rachel Shepherd’s final race. That was documented in Friday’s News Advertiser.

In the 4x200, the Panthers finished 22nd in a time of 1:52.57.

More was needed from the Panthers in the 4x400 to qualify for Saturday’s finals, as Creston took 20th in a time of 4:17.69.

Baker’s leg in the 4x400 was a season’s best. Otherwise, none of the Panthers ran bests or personal records.

“You come up here to run and jump PRs and we had one out of all the relays and field events,” Arnold said.

Going the distance Raiders finish well Wolverines end with best area boys finish ■

DES MOINES —Jared Corder wasn’t exactly content with his third-place finish in the 800 at the final day of the state track meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines Saturday.

However, his first-heat winning time of 1:57.98 earned him his third topthree medal at state, and second third-place finish in the last three years in the event.

Corder shot out to the lead in heat one, kept his distance from the pack the e n t i r e Corder time, and took heat one by more than two seconds.

“I ran my hardest and I came in third,” Corder said, “It’s okay. I’m not going to cry about it.”

The performance was a long time coming from Harper, who experienced persistent issues from anemia going back past last fall.

The issues carried throughout much of cross country season before the condition was diagnosed.

To be back at full-strength and to run the best race of her career at the grandest stage was an incredible accomplishment.

“I remember as a freshman looking at all the medalists and thinking I could never do that,” Harper said. “To actually be one is absolutely amazing feeling. I feel very accomplished and proud of myself and all of my supporters I’ve had. I couldn’t do

ish the last 200 meters, but his completion of the race was quite a bit stronger than his finish to the race at the Drake Relays.

He figured he may have ran even harder with race winner Gable Sieperda of Central Lyon and Boyer Valley’s Zach Ambrose in his heat, but didn’t believe that he could have offered up much more than what he had.

“They ran their hardest.

I ran my hardest. They just came out on top,” Corder said.

The 1,600 meter run brought the Wolverines’ state run to an end, as Shane Breheny ended his storied distance running career 12th-place in Class 1A in a time of 4:39.56.

Finishing half of a second in front of Breheny was fellow cross country state-championship winning teammate Brayten Funke, who ran the race in a personal record time of 4:39.00.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m really happy with that,” Breheny said.

“Me and Brayten have been running together since seventh grade. It’s a really nice way to end our high school career.”

Breheny coasted among the top five in the race before the pace got to him enough to slow him down in

the final lap.

Funke went from too fast, to dropping several spots in the third lap, to sprinting to the end of the race.

“I started out pretty fast, but then I slowed myself down and then toward the end I started to kick it more to catch back up,” Funke said.

For Funke, merely crossing the 4:50 threshold was a goal at the beginning of the season. Saturday, he bested his own record time by more than five seconds.

“I was like, it’s my last race, why not go for it? I wanted to get in the 30’s, which I did,” Funke said.

The distance medley unit finished in 22nd in a time of 3:50.43.

Nodaway Valley ended the season with a 25th-place finish at the state meet with nine team points.

Ending it right At the completion of Saturday’s Class 1A state 4x400 finale, the Mount Ayr boys relay unit casually walked across the infield of the Drake Stadium track.

The Raiders’ best event this season finished with the program’s best placing at state this past weekend boys or girls, with sixth-place finish.

Cal Daughton race his last event of his high school career with a quick 300 before

becoming gassed at the end.

“Cal’s a gutty guy. He doesn’t leave a lot left in the tank,” Mount Ayr coach Brad Elliott said.

Daughton and fellow senior Mitchell Jennett were able to end their careers on the famed blue oval.

“The kids fought hard, ran a nice race,” Elliott said.

“Not the best conditions, but when you start the relays off with two nice seniors we’ve had in Cal Daughton and Mitch Jennett, what a way for them to go out.”

The Hunter duo of sophomores Hunter Arends and Hunter Haveman ran the last two legs to end the weekend on a high note for the Raiders.

“I was right behind Earlham just trying to stay with them but it was close coming down the last straightway,” Arends said. “I knew I had to get around him to give Hunter (Haveman) a chance.”

Haveman’s split was good enough to fend off two squads within two seconds of the Raiders at the end, finishing in a time of 3:31.75.

“I’m real happy with my race. I feel like I ran hard and pushed my self,” Haveman said.

The Raiders finished eighth in Friday’s prelim for the event, barely gaining entry into the finals by way of

their time in the second section of the prelim.

The other finishes for the Raiders came as Mount Ayr finished 16th in the 4x200 relay prelims on Friday, and a 15th-place spot in the sprint medley relay with its time of 1:38.81.

Mount Ayr also had one of its records shattered on Saturday. Lisbon’s track and field squad posted a new Class 1A meet record 89 points in dominating the team race in the class for the state title.

Elliott was impressed that Lisbon accomplished the feat in crummy weather, noting that the Raider record was completed in excellent weather in Des Moines in 2014.

“I know what kind of team it took to do what we did,” Elliott said. “And they (Lisbon) had an outstanding team up here.”

SWV and Lenox content to run on blue Southwest Valley did not see the results it wanted in the state meet, but did travel three events to state.

The Timberwolves’ 4x200 relay of Wyatt McAlpin, Chance Cobb, Grant Maurer and Aaron Armstrong picked up 13th in 1:33.66.

Southwest Valley’s 4x100 also struggled some in the prelims, with the group finishing 22nd overall in 46.46

seconds.

The Timberwolves were still excited to be at state, as Southwest Valley has been sparsely represented on the blue oval in recent years.

Maurer carried that optimistic attitude with him from Friday’s 400 meter hurdles through Saturday.

Maurer ran the race in 59.23 seconds for 20th place.

He was joined by POI counterpart Dawson Tullberg who bested Maurer’s time with a 58.40 to take 16th.

“I wasn’t jumping with the right foot,” Tullberg said about leaping with his left. “I think a lot of it had to do with the weather and just being tight. It is what it is. Can’t change it.”

As for Maurer, he was proud to head into the relays later having already gotten on to the track representing in a number of ways.

“Not only to represent the Pride (of Iowa) but represent our own school,” Maurer said. “Our names, yourself. Great feeling coming out here. First time ever coming out here, not a feeling like it. Can’t get much better than this.”

Harper also represented the Eagles in the fourthplace winning distance medley unit.

Olivia Eckels and Mara Weis started off strong in the first two legs.

The handoff itself was flawless.

“It was perfect. We’ve done it so many times,” Weis said. “I knew she was coming in hot so I took out a lot quicker than I was used to.

It’s the fastest I’ve ever come off that first turn I think because of all the adrenaline and everything.”

Sidney McFee took the third leg handoff for the 400 meter portion better than most of her attempts this season. Typically, McFee leaves a step or two to early.

“Normally Liv always is on this turn so when I get tired she always yells ‘You’re not tired’ and normally I just look at her like, ‘yeah I am,’ but today I was like ‘you’re right, I’m not tired,’ although

I got tired,” McFee said with a laugh.

Harper brought home the relay, passing several runners in the 800 meter portion of the race, including Nodaway Valley’s Reagan Weinheimer to finish in a time of 4:21.65.

The Eagles earned 22nd place at the meet with 11 points as a squad.

The Eagles also posted a 19th-place finish from Eckels in the 100 hurdle prelims Friday.

Wolverines succeed in distance medley Nodaway Valley took sixth in the distance medley, with the group of Paige McElfish, Sadie Marnin, Rachel Scheel and Weinheimer.

McElfish was held in her blocks in the first leg for what felt like an eternity to the Wolverine senior. But she got out quick and handed off to Marnin with both in stride. Marnin shot out of the turn, sprinting like a rocket down the home stretch to

Rachel Scheel, who ran a 60-second flat 400.

“I felt fast. I gave it my all.

It felt really comfortable being back,” Marnin said.

Weinheimer took the last leg, and despite being overtaken by Harper, ran well.

“It was a great experience for my first time and I went really hard my first lap and I kind of lost it in my last 200 but I think I did pretty well,” Weinheimer said.

The Wolverine girls also took 18th in the sprint medley Saturday in a time of 1:56.88 and 23rd in the 4x200 relay.

The Nodaway Valley girls took 49th as a team with three team points.

Raiderettes medal three Alyssa Johnson in the 100 hurdles and Bailey Anderson in the 400 meter dash and MacKenzie Shields in the high jump were the Mount Ayr girls to bring home team points, as the Raiderettes earned 3.5 team points from the three.

Johnson’s time of 16.60 in the finals was good for seventh place. It wasn’t a personal best, but the junior was happy to place.

“It’s not necessarily my best, but I feel like considering the weather, I competed to the best of my abilities.

It’s better than last year,” Johnson said.

Shields was pleasntly surprised to find out her best leap of 5-0 on Friday earned her eighth place. She felt far different in her second appearance at state, back from a year ago.

“Last year I came up here really super nervous,” Shields said. “This year I was more excited than nervous.”

Going forward, Shields will continue to work on extending her vertical and improving her kick to reach closer to the school record of 5-4.

Anderson’s eighth-place finish in the 400 meter dash in a time of 1:01.00 was several tenths of a second better

than the year prior, as the junior improved upon her 10th-place finish from a year ago. Her goal coming in was to place.

“I know that everybody is going to really push and it’s going to be a really fast track here,” Anderson said. “I just have the same mindset, I’m just going to have to push like everybody else here and so I did that and I was pretty happy with what I got.”

Anderson also competed as the anchor leg in the Raiderettes’ 13th-place finish in the 4x400 prelims Friday and 10th-place sprint medley relay ran Saturday.

The Raiderettes took 24th in the 4x200 relay.

While the young Raiders team took a step forward, it was not quite enough to keep their season going.

Mount Ayrâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s season came to an end with a seventh-place finish on a cold, soggy and wet day for golf.

The Raiders finished with a 364.

Coon Rapids-Bayard won with a 329. North Mahaska claimed the other team qualifying spot to this weekendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s state tournament at Marshalltownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s American Legion Golf Course with a 332. Exira-Elk Horn-Kimbalton was third with a 343. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was real happy,â&#x20AC;? said Mount Ayr coach Scott Giles. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was proud of the way our kids played. That was a positive for us.â&#x20AC;?

The 45-stroke difference between Mount Ayr and Coon Rapids-Bayard showed the team what they need to do. â&#x20AC;&#x153;On the way home, I said Coon Rapids had a 329 and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re at 364. Myles Greene tied for seventh with an 81 to lead Mount Ayr, carding a 40 on the outward nine and a 41 on the outward nine. â&#x20AC;&#x153; H e played pretty well.

An area Giles wants to see from the team this summer and going forward is focusing more on playing the course. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One thing I tell the kids is donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go compete against the people in your group, compete against the golf course, what the golf course is playing, try to score your best against the golf course,â&#x20AC;?

Giles said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sometimes people think theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re playing the people in their group.

They get thinking Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got gram there,â&#x20AC;? Somers said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got some really, really nice facilities. I really like the coach and the campus.â&#x20AC;?

Somers did not know if he wanted to be at a smaller school like Doane, but the school sold him. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t opposed to a small school, but when I got there, it was a good fit for me,â&#x20AC;? Somers said.

He noted he is not sure of a major yet, but plans to decide in a year or two.

Having the choice made eased his mind. â&#x20AC;&#x153;After the first visit, I was like this is probably where Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going to spend my next four years,â&#x20AC;? Somers said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m glad I got out of the way. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m definitely looking forward to it.â&#x20AC;?

Playing at the NAIA level and in the Great Plains Athletic Conference, with schools such as Northwestern in Orange City, and Briar Cliff and Morningside, both based in Sioux City, will test Somers.

Eagles coach Dave Campbell and the team returned to Union County excited about their chances, the opportunity that stood in front of them to reach the state tournament heading into the district meet.

2 men sentenced for bilking Iowa woman in IRS scam MASON CITY (AP) — Men from Texas and Alabama have been sentenced for posing as Internal Revenue Service agents and bilking a northern Iowa woman.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports that 41-yearold Eduardo Cruz, of Grapevine, Texas, last week was sentenced to four days in jail.

A $625 fine was suspended, and he was ordered to pay

nearly $5,000 in restitution.

He’d pleaded guilty to theft.

Co-defendant Coty Phillips, of Eufaula, Alabama, last month was sentenced to 85 days in jail and ordered to pay $69 in restitution.

Police say Phillips and Cruz had called the woman and threatened her with arrest if she didn’t pay them money they said she owed the government.
