Lois Monday remembered AG: New Iowa governor won’t as ‘colorful personality’ have power to pick lieutenant DES MOINES (AP) — Iowa’s attorney general has concluded that Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds will not have the power to appoint a lieutenant governor when she replaces Gov. Terry Branstad, a Reynolds surprise reversal that infuriated Republicans and set up a potential consti-
tutional showdown. Reynolds is preparing to become governor when Branstad resigns to become U.S. ambassador to China, which is expected to happen once he’s confirmed by the U.S. Senate. In a legal opinion released Monday, Democratic Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller said Reynolds will have the title and powers of governor through January 2019 but not the authority to choose IOWA | 2A

In the supervisor’s room at the Union County Courthouse, a variety of county officials and employees sit and stand in a circle, commenting how Lois Monday impacted each and every one of them. “Lois was a very colorful personality with a wonderful sense of humor,” said Union County Board of Supervisors Chair Dennis Brown. “She worked hard all her life, never had anything handed to her and she had to work and scrap and fight for everything she got.” Monday, a prominent voice in the Creston and Union County communi-
ties, was 74 when she died April 25. Monday was born Dec. 17, 1942, to Henry Paul McNichols and Gladys Lucille (Conklin) McNich- Monday ols in Creston, graduating from Creston High School in 1961. She found her niche in selling real estate and insurance and completing income taxes. She owned and operated Monday Realty Income Tax and Accounting Services for many years in Creston. She married Jerry Allen Monday in 1978 and spent

Iowa inmate captured after killing deputy during escape COUNCIL BLUFFS (AP) — An inmate shot two sheriff’s deputies, killing one of them, and escaped from an Iowa jail on Monday before he was recaptured a short time later following a high-speed chase across the state border in Nebraska. Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker said Wesley Williams Correa-Carmenaty, 23, managed to steal a sheriff’s dep-
uty’s gun after he returned from court and shot the two deputies around 11 a.m. Then Correa-Carmenaty stole the transport van and crashed through a garage door at the Pottawattamie County Jail in Council Bluffs, which is just across the Missouri River from Omaha, Nebraska. Man charged with burning covered bridge pleads not guilty WINTERSET (AP) — An 18-year-old accused in the burning of a covered bridge featured in the best-selling novel “The Bridges of Madison County” has pleaded not guilty. Court records say Joel D a v i s entered the pleas Monday to arson and related charges. His trial is Davis scheduled
to begin July 18. The bridge destroyed April 15 near Winterset also was featured in the 1995 movie adaptation starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep. The novel was written by Robert James Waller, who died in March. Prosecutors say 17-yearold Alexander Hoff of West Des Moines will be facing an arson charge as well. Hoff was seen on surveillance video purchasing a gas can, which was later found in a ditch near the bridge.

Ralston finished eighth overall and second in the female 12-and-under division with her time of 27:16, while Strunk was ninth overall and third in the female 12-and-under division, also running 27:16. Jacob Kinyon was the overall winner in 21:42, while Christa Cass was the top female finisher in 23:30.
