It was all smiles for Collin Bevins and his family after receiving an undrafted free agent offer from the Arizona Cardinals Saturday afternoon. Shown from left are Collin’s mother, Michelle Bevins of Clarinda, Collin, Collin’s brother Jared Bevins of Harlan and Collin’s father Jeff Bevins, activities director at Creston Community High School. Collin’s sister, Michaela Biggart and her family, were unable to attend.

home, Bevins received the first of many calls from NFL team officials before the final round ended. The first call at 5:05 p.m. from the Arizona Cardinals scouting director turned out to be the one that paved the way for his future. Shortly after the draft concluded, after also talking to officials from the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Redskins, Bevins accepted the offer from the Cardinals to join the team as an undrafted free agent. Financial terms are still being finalized with the team and Bevins’ agent, Kyle Dolan of Priority Sports in Chicago. “They’re still talking about a signing bonus amount, but after that there’s nothing guaranteed,” Bevins said afterward. “I’ll fly down there on May 11 and sign with them before rookie minicamp starts.”

Collin Bevins’ NFL draft dream took a momentary detour late Saturday afternoon, but it ended up in the desired place. Projected as a possible selection in the sixth or seventh rounds as a defensive end prospect after an NCAA Division II All-American career at Northwest Missouri State University, the 2012 graduate of Creston Community High School went undrafted in the event that concluded at 5:45 p.m. But, sitting among family and friends in his Creston

WASHINGTON (AP) — Lawmakers on Monday unveiled a huge $1 trillion-plus spending bill that would fund most government operations through September but would deny President Donald Trump money for a border wall and rejects his proposed cuts to popular domestic programs. The 1,665-page bill agreed to on Sunday is the product of weeks of negotiations. It was made public in the predawn hours Monday and is tentatively scheduled for a House vote on Wednesday. The catchall spending bill would be the first major piece of bipartisan leg-

islation to advance during Trump’s short tenure in the White House. While losing on funding for the wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, Trump won a $15 billion down payment on his request to strengthen the military, though that too fell short of what he requested. Vice President Mike Pence said the administration “couldn’t be more pleased” and noted that it would include a boost in military spending, a “down payment” on border security and provide money for health benefits for coal miners.
