Creston Community High School prom update Melissa Driskell of the Creston Community High School prom committee released the following information regarding Saturday’s prom. Pictures will be taken from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Maple Street Memories in Creston. Those pictures will include prom servers and all juniors and seniors attending prom. New this year, the grand march will not take place inside the CCHS gym, but will take place at the main entrance of the
school. The grand march begins at 6 p.m., when the first car will be unloaded at the high school. “We will have a minimal number of bleachers, but we will have bleachers there,” Driskell said. “People can bring their own chairs if they want. We are calling the outside where they walk up the red carpet the grand march. Kids will be interviewed on the red carpet before they go
into the high school. There will be lots of photo opportunities. We are encouraging kids to take their time walking up the red carpet.” The public will not be allowed entry into the high school under any circumstances. Restrooms will be available at the football field for the public during the grand march. The grand march is expected to end around 7:30 or 7:45 p.m., with dinner for the prom attendees beginning at 8 p.m.
The dance runs from 9 to 11:30 p.m., with Crestubilee running from midnight to 5 a.m. “For the grand march, we are asking people to park at the church across the street or on the side streets as Townline will be blocked off between Spruce and Sycamore streets,” Driskell said. “The times are exactly as they have always been. The biggest change is it’s an outside grand march and no public will be allowed inside the school under any circumstances.”

Veteran NASA spacewoman getting 3 extra months in orbit CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — The world’s oldest and most experienced spacewoman is getting three extra months in orbit. NASA announced Wednesday that astronaut Peggy Whitson will remain
on the International Space Station until September. The 57-year-old astronaut arrived last November and was supposed to return to Earth in June. But under an agreement between NASA and the Russian Space Agency, she’ll stay another
three months and take advantage of an empty seat on a Soyuz capsule in the fall. This mission — her third — will now last close to 10 months. Scientists are eager to monitor any changes to her body, to add to the knowledge gained from re-
tired astronaut Scott Kelly’s recent one-year flight. The two men she flew up with in November — France’s Thomas Pesquet and Russia’s Oleg Novitskiy — will return in June WHITSON | 16A

Iowa GOP lawmakers call for cuts in state spending DES MOINES (AP) — Iowa government spending would be stagnant in its next state budget under a plan released Wednesday by Republican lawmakers, a proposal they acknowledged could mean cuts for some departments in order to meet promised spending in other areas such as K-12 education. The joint spending targets, which total roughly $7.2 billion, would go into effect for the budget year that begins in July. It’s about $14 million less than the current budget.
Republicans earlier this year slashed the current budget by more than $110 million to plug a budget shortfall, in part by cutting spending for state agencies, community colleges and public universities. They also agreed to use more than $130 million from a rainy day fund to plug a second shortfall. GOP lawmakers have vowed to repay the dip in cash reserves within two years and keep a commitment to spend about $40 IOWA | 16A
