Creston native organizes Iowa Barnstormers fundraiser to honor Mick Landers By SCOTT VICKER
CNA managing editor svicker@crestonnews.com
DES MOINES – The first time Logan Angelo met the late Mick Landers, Angelo was a 2-year-old in need of emergency care. Landers was the first responder who showed up at the Angelo home, providing assistance to Angelo. As Angelo grew older, he grew up around Landers’ children and around the Landers family. So, when Landers died of cancer April 13, Angelo began brainstorming ways he could honor Landers’ life through his role as director of game operations and presentation for the Iowa Barnstormers arena football team. The Barnstormers already had their “First Responders Game” scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Saturday against the Colorado Crush at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. “Since it was so close, we decided not to do a benefit that night,” Angelo said. “But, we’re going to honor Mick that night. We’ll put a graphic up and do a PA read about him. So, Mick will be part of that.” Before Landers’ death, he selected two local organizations he wanted donations for his memorial fund to go toward – Creston Fire Department, as well as the Cancer Support Ministry at Crest Baptist Church. With that in mind, Angelo has set up a fundraising effort in conjunction with the Barnstormers May 13 game against Cedar Rapids. Special tickets are being sold for $10, with 50 percent
of the proceeds from those tickets going directly toward the two organizations Landers selected. During the game, the Barnstormers will present a check to the Landers family on the field. “There’s an entire section reserved for Creston residents,” Angelo said. “We’ll bring the Landers family out to the field and we’ll present them a check from the proceeds. If people from out of town want tickets as well, they can call and we’ll mail them out to them.” The special tickets are available in Creston at Powers Funeral Home, Creston Fire Department and both Kilgore’s RV locations in town. “We’re trying to make sure that people order from the actual fundraiser, that way the proceeds go back to Creston,” Angelo said. “There’s currently 200 tickets in Creston. If we sell 200 tickets, I’m more than willing to bring more tickets down to Creston.” Creston Fire Chief Todd Jackson said he was surprised when Debbie Angelo, Logan’s mother, contacted him to tell him about the fundraiser. “Throughout our career, we touch different people’s lives and are seemingly unaware of it,” Jackson said. “Mick h a d touched t h e i r lives, attributed to helping save their son’s life.
