AP Exclusive: Amid cuts, new Iowa building gets pricey redo
‘Stole my heart’
DES MOINES (AP) — A plan to spend nearly a half-million dollars remodeling the interior of the newest state office building in Des Moines is moving ahead despite budget cuts that are slicing an array of state programs and services, documents obtained by The Associated Press show. The Iowa Utilities Board is planning to demolish and redo much of the customer service area in its award-winning, six-year-old building. Planning documents obtained under the open records law call for extensive renovations, including new glass walls and doors, ceilings, woodwork, CNA photo by SCOTT VICKER

Some people wear their hearts on their sleeve. Lindsay Gaunt of Creston wears a puzzle piece on her leg. The puzzle piece in permanent ink holds special meaning for Lindsay. Written in a circle around the outer edges of the yet-tobe-completed puzzle piece tattoo are the words “A little girl with autism stole my heart.” Lindsay raises aware-
ness for autism every day through the tattoo. Saturday, Lindsay and her family will walk in the Autism Society of Iowa’s fifth-annual Autism Awareness 5K Run, Walk and Resource Fair at Creston Community High School. Obreigh, the 4-year-old daughter of Lindsay and Cory Gaunt, is autistic. And, though, life hasn’t been what Lindsay and Cory expected when their first child was born, Lindsay said she wouldn’t change anything. “It hurts me to see Obreigh struggle with all the things she does, but I wouldn’t change Obreigh for the world,” Lindsay

paint and even a 75-inch Samsung television. A transaction counter would be demolished and replaced with a customer greeting desk. A conference room and two smaller meeting rooms would be added. The two-story, $10 million building is considered among the nicest in the Capitol Complex, where many date to the 1970s or earlier. It opened in 2011 to much fanfare on the site of a former landfill, winning praise for its energy-efficiency and elegant design. As lawmakers finished a $7.2 billion budget that cuts REDO | 2A
‘Bachelor’ star Chris Soules jailed after deadly Iowa crash IOWA CITY (AP) — Iowa authorities have arrested former “The Bachelor” star Chris Soules, alleging that he fled the scene of a deadly traffic accident. The Iowa State Patrol reports that a pickup truck rear-ended a tractor on a highway in Buchanan County on Monday night, sending both vehicles into a ditch and killing the tractor driver, whose name wasn’t released. The crash happened on County Highway 45, about
15 miles south of Soules’ farm in Arlington, which is about 75 miles (120 kilometers) north of Iowa City. The county jail says the 35-year-old Soules was booked early Tuesday on a charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Court records show that Soules was convicted of operating a vehicle while intoxicated in 2006. He starred on season 19 of the ABC reality show in 2015.
15 indicted in eagle trafficking case; more charges expected RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Federal officials in South Dakota said Monday that 15 people have been indicted for illegally trafficking eagles and other migratory birds after a two-year undercover operation potentially involving hundreds of birds. U.S. Attorney Randy Seiler said that officials expect “significant” additional federal charges in the case, which focused on trafficking of eagles and eagle parts and feathers for profit. Author-
ities said the case involves more than 100 eagles, a number that could climb as high as 250. Seiler described one operation as basically a “chopshop for eagles” in which eagle feathers were stuffed into garbage bags. He said it was clear that it was a moneymaking operation and that the feathers and eagle parts such as talons and beaks were treated as EAGLES | 2A
