After a biennial assessment done on property valuation in Union County, the results are in that residential property did not increase overall, while commercial properties did.

“Real estate assessment rolls have been recently mailed to property owners of Union County,” said

Union County Assessor Theresa Pudenz. “Many property owners can expect to see a few changes on their assessments due to each odd-numbered year being a revaluation year.

“Overall, an increase in valuation means that the property values are increasing in the county,” Pudenz continued. “Depending on what the overall levy does decides what happens to your actual price that you have to pay in taxes. That’s a big variable.”

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump made a very long distance phone call to the International Space Station, to congratulate its commander on breaking the record for the most time spent in space of any American astronaut.

The president spoke Monday with Peggy Whitson, commander of the International Space Station, and fellow astronaut Jack Fischer.

Whitson, the first woman to command the International Space Station, sur-

passed the record of 534 days, two hours and 48 minutes for most accumulated time Whitson in orbit by an American. That record was set last year by Jeffrey Williams.

Cynthia McCloud, 65, of Creston died Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Cynthia Lorraine McCloud, daughter of Harold Leroy McCloud and Emma Mae (Sandveit) McCloud, was born Dec. 13, 1951, in Baudette, Minnesota. Cynthia was educated at Lake of the Woods School in Baudette, Minnesota, and graduated in 1970. After graduation, Cynthia resided in Sharpsburg, moving to Creston in 2010. Cyndi took classes at Southwestern Commu-

nity College for CNA and obtained her certificate. She was employed at Lenox Care Center where she worked for many years as a CNA and in the dietary department. She was a caregiver for many people in their homes while they were sick.

While recovering at a rehab center in Des Moines, Cyndi met Michael Smith.

Michael and Cyndi were to be married, but her health declined and the wedding had to be postponed.

Cyndi is survived by her fiancé Michael Smith of Des Moines; mother Emma McCloud of Creston; brothers, Jeff (Judy) McCloud of St. Joseph, Missouri, Greg (Belinda) McCloud of Denton, Texas, and Mark McCloud of Rocky Mound, North Carolina; sisters, Belinda (Kevin) Lindley of Creston, Sherry (Lee) Newport of Grand Island, Nebraska, Patty (Ken) Mottin of Grand Island, Nebraska, Kitty (Randy) Peterman of Gravity and Sandra Donaldson (Jere Ferguson) of Lenox; along with many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Cynthia was preceded in death by her father Harold McCloud, brother-in-law John Donaldson, nephew Clinton McCloud and great-nephews, Carter and Kaleb Zellmer.

Whitson already was the world’s most experienced spacewoman and female spacewalker and, at 57, the oldest woman in space. By the time she returns to Earth in September, she’ll have logged 666 days in orbit over three flights.

The world record — 879 days — is held by Russian Gennady Padalka.

College student research on display Wednesday at SWCC The academic work of Southwestern Community College (SWCC) students will be on display during Spring 2017 Poster Day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, in the SWCC Student Center gymnasium.

During poster day, approximately 100 students’ research projects will be displayed and students will be available to answer questions about their projects.

Student research will focus on topics including biology, environmental issues and sustainability, nutrition, human anatomy and physiology, business, history, psychology and sociology.

The event is free and the public is invited to attend.

DES MOINES (AP) — Fresh off their success in pushing through a conservative agenda in the session that ended Saturday, Iowa Republicans say they’re already looking ahead to next year.

Lawmakers adjourned the 2017 session Saturday morning after passing GOP-led legislation that reduced public unions’ power, added abortion restrictions and expanded gun rights.

They said they’ll return to unfinished business next year that includes tax cuts, immigration enforcement and the use of public education money for private instruction.

“We’ve made tremend o u s strides this year,” said Sen. J a k e Chapm a n , R-Adel. “ T h a t ’ s Chapman just the beginning.”

Throughout the last days of session, GOP lawmakers repeatedly said cutting taxes would be a priority when they return in January. Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds, who will succeed Gov. Terry Branstad if he’s confirmed as the next U.S. ambassador to China, said “comprehensive tax reform” is on her to-do list.

She emphasized the goal of making Iowa competitive by lowering corporate tax rates and p o s s i b l y Reynolds reducing individual income taxes, though she didn’t offer specifics.

“I want it to be significant but I want it to be sustainable,” she said.

Another issue that gained attention this year but failed to advance was immigration enforcement. Bills proposed banning so-called sanctuary cities, which are self-designated communities that focus on ensuring immigrants in the country without legal status understand their rights. There are no sanctuary cities in Iowa.

A bill that passed in the Senate but wasn’t taken up in the House would have added penalties to communities that didn’t comply with federal immigration enforcement. Advocacy groups said the measure could have faced legal challenges.

Sen. Julian Garrett, R-Indianola, said he’s hopeful they’ll tackle the issue again in 2018. He added, “We don’t want to see people taking advantage of their fellow Iowans by disobeying the law.”

Republicans may also push legislation that uses public education money for expenses like private tuition. House Education Committee Chairman Walt Rogers, R-Cedar Falls, said he plans to further study education savings accounts, which would give individual students flexibility to spend education-designated dollars. Critics said such effort would hurt public schools by redirecting state funding.

“I still get a lot of emails and input about that issue,” he said. “It’s something that our caucus wants to pursue.”

The increase in commercial property valuation comes after an overall increase in sales and a boosted economy in Union County. Also, Pudenz said the increase of 19.5 percent on commercial property valuation was to prevent a possible equalization order in the fall of 23 percent.

“We’ve had a lot of economic activity in commercial sales over the last couple of years that have called for that increase,” Pudenz said. “We haven’t had an increase in commercial

step in Iowa. It included a stand-your-ground provision, which permits the use of deadly force anywhere if someone feels a risk to their life or safety, even if that assessment of danger is incorrect. The next priority, Windschitl said, is an addition to the Iowa Constitution to reaffirm gun rights.

“We absolutely need to make sure that our constitution has the protections in it that will protect Iowans’ Second Amendment rights now and for generations to come,” he said.

After a failed effort to advance the most restrictive abortion legislation in the country, Republicans passed a ban on most abortions at 20 weeks of preg-

nancy. Next session, some hope to at least revisit a socalled heartbeat bill, which would ban abortion around six weeks of pregnancy, likely leading to legal challenges.

Rep. Shannon Lundgren, R-Peosta, said she anticipates legislation that further limits abortion, but is unsure which restrictions her caucus will unite on.

“I think a logical next step is to look at legislation that continues to restrict abortions after we know a baby is formed and it’s a viable human being,” she said. “There’s a certain point when that baby has a beating heart.”

In 2007, there was an increase of 22 percent.

Pudenz explained that when the state looks at the equalization of all jurisdictions in the state of Iowa, they have to equal out to 100 percent, but there is a cushion of 5 percent more and less.

Equalization, she said, means the Iowa Department of Revenue takes into consideration all the good business sales. The department the looks at the sales, what the property sold for and what it assessed at.

“There’s a little bit of room, but if it’s beyond that (5 percent cushion), there’s potential of equalization to equalize values countywide in that class,” Pudenz said.

She said some people will see an increase more than likely, but there is a business property tax credit available for any commercial property owner in Union County.

There was no change in valuation for industrial properties.

Taxes include a levy applied to them based on valuation of property and tax levies from various entities within the county, such as Greater Regional Medical Center and Creston Community Schools.

Taxes already completed and paid were based on the 2015 valuation. This assessment is based on 2016 valuations, which Pudenz explained is “why valuations seem so off, it’s because of budgetary purposes: the 2017 value will be applied in the fall of 2018.”

In a nutshell and according to the Iowa Department of Revenue website, the value of property is established, assessments of all taxable properties are added together and the state revenue department examines total assessed values

and equalizes them to 100 percent. This equalized percent allows property values to be comparable among jurisdictions.

Then, budgets are established, followed by a tax rate, and credits are subtracted.

Ringgold County Sheriff taking unwanted prescriptions April 29 MOUNT AYR – From l0 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 29, Ringgold County Sheriff’s Office and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its 13th opportunity in seven years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your pills for disposal to the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Office lobby, 801 W. South St., in Mount Ayr. The DEA cannot accept liquids, needles or sharps, only pills or patches.

The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Last October, Americans turned in 366 tons (more than 730,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at almost 5,200 sites operated by the DEA and more than 4,000 of its state and local law enforcement partners. Overall, in its 12 previous take back events, DEA and its partners have taken in more than 7.1 million pounds (more than 3,500 tons) of pills.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse.

Janice, I’m with you on this! Yes, they do sell mattress protectors, which you buy, then put OVER the mattress. Here is the Heloise Hint: Buy a fabric/ leather protector spray and use this on your mattress. It’s best to do several light coats, rather than one heavy.

The handles are supposed to be used when placing the mattress on the box spring, not really to “flip” the mattress. However, most of us do use them when it’s time to flip or rotate the mattress.

Also, today MOST new mattresses have “pillow” tops, and unless the pillow is on both top and bottom, you can’t flip it!

Orient-Macksburg Community School District Board of Directors Budget Public Hearing April 10, 2017 - 6:15pm Board of Directors of Orient-Macksburg Community School District held a Public Hearing concerning proposed district's budget for Fiscal Year 2017-18 at 6:15pm, April 10, 2017, in Superintendent's Office. Board members present were Wendi Eslinger, Ryan Frederick, Eldon Ray and Jana Scott. Absent - Tricia Gardner. Also present were Superintendent Clark Wicks, Principal Teresa Thompson, Secretary Julie Frederick and Chase Stohr.

President Eldon Ray called meeting to order at 6:15pm.

Motion by Scott, second by Eslinger, to approve Agenda. Motion carried unanimously.

Visitors were welcome.

Superintendent Wicks and Business Manager Frederick gave an extensive power point presentation covering all aspects of 2017-18 proposed budget which was published with total requirements of $5,034,972 and a property tax rate of 11.36557 per $1,000 taxable valuation. A question and answer discussion followed.

There were no written or oral comments received from public regarding the budget for the 2017-18 school year.

Motion by Frederick, second by Eslinger, to adjourn meeting. Motion carried unanimously. Meeting closed at 6:35pm.

Motion by Eslinger, second by Frederick, to approve budget and itinerary for 2017 Prom April 22, 2017. Motion carried unanimously Motion by Frederick, second by Eslinger, to approve 2017-18 proposed budget as presented with total requirements of $5,034,972 and a property tax rate of 11.36557 per $1,000 taxable valuation.

Motion by Frederick, second by Scott, to approve 2017-18 School Calendar with a few changes and meeting all state requirements. Motion carried unanimously.

Motion by Scott, second by Frederick, to approve Southwestern Community College Educational Services Contracts for 2017-18 school year. Motion carried unanimously.

Motion by Ray, second by Frederick, to approve bid of Schafer Roofing in the amount of $208,620 and further motion to finance the new gym roof project as follows: Pay $50,000 down funded by sales tax revenue and finance the balance of $166,620 (including attorney fees) against the sales tax fund with Farmers & Merchants State Bank for five years at 3.25% interest. Superintendent Wicks will clarify the bid with Schafer Roofing and conversations with the district's bonding attorney and Farmers & Merchants State Bank will begin. Motion carried unanimously.

Motion by Eslinger, second by Frederick, to increase adult school meal price from $3.45 to $3.55 as mandated by State of Iowa. Motion carried unanimously.

Motion by Eslinger, second by Frederick, to approve contracts of Sarah Mathiews and Jennifer Ray as Co-Jr. Class Sponsors for 2017-18 school year. Motion carried unanimously.

Motion by Frederick, second by Scott, to keep the current three school buses and enter into a new 5-year lease at $10,840 per bus per year to own at the end of 5 years. Motion carried unanimously.

Owen Hensley and Jennifer Ray present to review itinerary for the Class of 2017 Senior Trip to Lead, South Dakota, with board. Will leave 4:00pm on May 4 and will return on May 7. Motion by Frederick, second by Eslinger, to approve itinerary and budget outlined. Motion carried unanimously.

Motion by Frederick, second by Eslinger, to approve following contracts as presented: Michael Cooley as 2016-17 Head Softball Coach, Jim Corkrean as Food Service Worker for 2016-17, Drew Dornack as 2016-17 Head Baseball Coach, Trevor Luther as 2016-17 Assistant Baseball Coach, Dawna Mitchell as 2016-17 Assistant Softball Coach, Laura Stearns as 2016-17 Bookkeeper for Softball and Chase Stohr as 2016-17 Junior High Track Coach. Motion carried unanimously.

Motion by Eslinger, second by Scott, to approve Nolte, Cornman & Johnson, PC as the district's auditing firm for next three years ending June 30, 2019. Motion carried unanimously.

Motion by Eslinger, second by Frederick, to approve proposed 2017-18 salary schedules for both certified and classified staff as presented. Administration salary schedules will be approved next month.

Created in 2005, the program has designated 41 Iowa Great Places and recognizes communities that enhance local places while maintaining their unique character.

New Orleans takes down 1st of 4 Confederate statues NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Workers in New Orleans removed the first of four prominent Confederate monuments Monday morning, making the city the latest Southern institution to sever itself from symbols viewed by many as a representation of racism and white supremacy.

The Liberty Place monument, which commemorates whites who tried to topple a biracial post-Civil War government in New Orleans, was taken away on a truck in pieces around 5:35 a.m. after a few hours of work.

At a news conference hours after the statue was dismantled, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu vowed that “we will no longer allow the Confederacy to literally be put on a pedestal in the heart of our city.”

The removal happened early in the morning in an attempt to avoid disruption from supporters who want the monuments to stay, some of whom city officials said have made death threats.

Course challenges Creston/O-M girls golf

OSCEOLA — The layout of the Osceola Country Club posed a nice test for the Creston/Orient-Macksburg girls golf team Friday.

The Panthers fared well, taking home the top two individual spots.

Sophia Groumoutis was the medalist, with a 41, while Ashton Carter was the runner-up with a 46 on a cold and windy day for golf in Clarke County.

The smallish greens at the course gave the golfers a challenge, one Creston/Orient-Macksburg coach Jon Thomson was glad his team could see.

“One of the things I love coming over here is they have such small greens and

we don’t have many courses that have small greens, which tests the girls and even the boys to come out here and play a little different golf,” Thomson said.

The shots into the holes were different for the girls than normal.

“For the girls, it’s hard to hold the greens, so you’ve got to play a little more bump and run,” Thomson said. “It’s a good experience for them.”

The hilly terrain also posed a challenge.

“You never get a flat lie out here, so you constantly have to adjust where the ball is in your stance,” Thomson said. “It’s a good test for the girls to come out here and play this course.”

The Panther girls also saw the importance of setting up the hole from the tee.

“It’s one of those deals where you want to assess the hole, where you want to be,” Thomson said.

Clarke was the only one to field a complete team, while Creston/Orient-Macksburg and Interstate 35 did not field full squads.

Clarke was led by Sadie Marker’s round of 49. Interstate 35 was led by Addie Smith’s round of 60.

Sophomore day, split emotions Spartans celebrate sophomores with win over Bears as Briley returns ■

Coming away with even one win against two of NJCAA Division II’s topranked teams is something to look positively upon.

So after two losses to topranked Region 11 foe Kirkwood on Saturday by scores of 12-1 and 15-0, Sunday’s Sophomore Day festivities celebrating the careers of seven sophomores came with an added plus.

How does a win over the fifth-ranked Des Moines Area College Bears sound?

Southwestern pulled out a 6-2 win in game one before being defeated 10-0 in five short innings in game two.

“I’m excited. They played really well in the first game,’” said Southwestern coach Paige Cassady said.

“Came out very focused.

Wish we could have come out and done the same in the second game. Would have been nice to have a sweep, but I have a lot more confidence going into the weekend knowing that we played close games against DMACC and Kirkwood.”

Southwestern entered the third inning of game one trailing 1-0 before posting a three-spot on the board.

Big week set for Drake Relays

DES MOINES — New Drake Relays Director Blake Boldon has kept quite busy the past few months assembling an outstanding field of track and field athletes for the 108th annual event this week at Drake Stadium.

Final preparations are being put to the meet that started with the Beautiful Bulldog Contest Sunday.

Track and field events officially begin Tuesday with the Grand Blue Mile race Tuesday at 6 p.m. in downtown Des Moines.

Boldon has made a few minor tweaks to the schedule this year.

“From my perspective as a former athlete, as a former coach, thinking that with some of the best athletes, we want to make sure this is the world’s best track meet,” Boldon said. “People love the Drake Relays, people love track and field. It’s

not dramatic changes, but we evaluate all little components of the meet to create the best possible meet.”

The high school girls 3,000-meter race and boys 3,200-meter race have been moved from Thursday afternoon to part of a distance running carnival Thursday

night.

“We had the state’s best high school runners in the 3,000 and 3,200 running in the middle of the day in an empty stadium. It meant a couple of things — the student athletes were going to have to miss school and parents would have to miss

work to be here,” Boldon said. “We looked a couple simple little things that make a big difference. Moving it after 6 p.m. allows parents, coaches, family, track and field fans here in central Iowa, people who love track and field distance events to be here Thursday night to watch the best high school distance runners, where previously they had to take half a day off work.”

Big day for Panther tennis doubles duo

NORWALK — Jacob Cook and Jaden Driskell took big steps forward Saturday.

The top Creston/Orient-Macksburg boys tennis doubles team bested three other squads to claim first place at the Saydel Tournament Saturday at Norwalk Middle School.

The duo beat Mark Mosher and Brody Echer of Ballard 11-10 in the final, 10-5 in the tiebreaker.

The Ballard pair was a state qualifier last year and placed eighth.

“It was a great day,” said Creston/Orient-Macksburg coach Kevin Cooper. “They proved what

they do is right.

They can play with those kids.”

Cook and Driskell had chances to put the Bombers pair away, and finally came Cook through in the tiebreaker.

“Tiebreakers are all about momentum.

They got momentum and ran away with it,” Driskell Cooper said.

Serving powered the Creston pair.

“The way they served and returned second serves was the dif-

ference in the day,” Cooper said.

“Cook and Jaden both served really well. They’re both competitive.

They knew they could do it.”

With the second half of the season looming, the future looks good for Cook and Driskell.

“We’re looking for big things from them the next three weeks,” Cooper said.

Dustin Merritt placed third in singles.

“Dustin, he can hit with anybody,” Cooper said. “His strokes are as good as anybody’s. His consistency is where sometimes he needs a little work. He’s been doing great on that the last couple of weeks.”

The top of Creston/Orient-Macksburg’s lineup showed what they can do.

“It was good for the top of the lineup,” Cooper said. “We have kids who have been there. The top three have been there before.

They knew what to expect.”

The second Panthers doubles team of Emilien Florentin and Ethan Anderson dropped both of their matches. Walker Patterson lost both of his matches in singles.

“It (the tournament) takes getting used too,” Cooper said.

Young Panther girls tennis team gains experience Eckels sets East Union

KNOXVILLE — Two of Creston/Orient-Macksburg’s more inexperienced varsity girls tennis players stepped up in a big spot at Friday’s Knoxville Tournament.

The doubles combination of senior Leah Stow and freshman Heylee Shields answered the challenge effectively in placing fifth, one of two Creston/Orient-Macksburg groups to place.

Shields and Stow placed fifth, stepping up from their normal role on the junior varsity.

The two stepped in after regular number one Megan Haley was held out with an injury and Chloe Hagle had another conflict.

“It was a very successful day for the new duo,” said Creston/Orient-Macksburg assistant coach Amanda Plymale.

Shields and Stow found chemistry quickly on the court.

“They quickly figured

out each others strengths and weaknesses to be able to work together,” Plymale said.

Shields controlled the action up close throughout their matches in helping her team- Shields mate.

“Shields was very dominant at the net and ended points quickly for the duo,” Plymale said. “Their fifthplace finish was an exciting win for them.”

Mattie Wheeler was sixth in singles.

“Wheeler had a nice comeback in the consolation bracket,” Plymale said.

“Wheeler had strong serves and attacked the net against Bailey (from Centerville) and Miller (from Knoxville) to earn quick wins. I am proud of how relentless Wheeler was playing against tough opponents.”

The doubles team of Sara Williamson and Livi Hartman went 1-2 on the day,

learning much from the three matches.

“Williamson and Hartman struggled with being aware of their position on the court and left open space for opponents to attack,” Plymale said. “We can only get better from this experience.”

Madison Callahan went 0-2.

“Callahan played tough opponents and just couldn’t get into a rhythm with her groundstrokes,” Plymale said. “It was a learning experience and will only make her better and it was good for her to get some extra matches in.”

UP NEXT — Creston/ Orient-Macksburg is Ballard today (Monday) in non-conference play.

“We know Ballard is always a dominant team, but we will compete to the best of our ability,” Plymale said.

AFTON — East Union’s Olivia Eckels is putting together a fine junior season.

She took another big step forward Thursday at the East Union Co-Ed Invitational.

Eckels broke the school record in the 100-meter

hurdles in a time of 16.49 seconds to place second.

She also anchored the shuttle hurdle relay team to a sea- Eckels son’s-best time in placing first.

“She has been improving with each and every meet,” said East Union coach Rich Bryson.

knew that Chuong was capable of such feats when the aggressor and not acting timid on the pitch.

“She played a much better game in terms of being willing to body up next to somebody and win the ball,” Lauffer said.

Chuong was one of two Panthers, Bre Ross the other, who scored in penalty kicks.

The Panthers defense got them through two overtimes having allowed just a single goal, but it was evident that the Panthers lagged.

“Our defense was strong the entire game,” Lauffer said. “The last 20 minutes it was so hard for them.”

Creston keeper Leah Shuler recorded 15 stops for the Panthers. Several came in overtime to help force the game to PK’s, but the game ended with the Monarchs victorious.

Much of the success rested on the shoulders of sophomore pitcher Schiefen, who changed pitch speeds, locations and induced plenty of groundouts and popouts throughout game one to frustrate the Bears. DMACC managed six hits against Schiefen.

“I was hoping that she would let us do a lot of work and she did in the first game, Cassady said. “The second game she got a bit off-kilter but in the first game she did a great job and got us ground balls and pop flies that we needed.

Not only did Schiefen seem to step up her game as the game moved along, so did the defense.

Phelps impressed Cassady with how she has come along behind the plate.

“She did a great job today,” Cassady said.

“He really emerged in Rio,” Boldon said.

In the Grand Blue Mile, both defending champions will be back. Chad Noelle was the men’s winner last year and a two-time Drake Relays champion and 2015 NCAA champion in the 1,500. Heather Camp is a three-time Grand Blue Mile champion and has won the U.S. Road Mile three years in a row.

“She’s definitely a fan favorite,” Boldon said.

Another change is moving the popular college sprint medley relay to Friday evening, moving it from Saturday morning.

“College coaches aren’t comfortable with their best sprinters in the sprint medley competing early in the morning,” Boldon said. “Now they have a chance to compete in prime time. Using the combined knowledge, we’ve improved a fan favorite. We can showcase it in the middle

of prime viewing time. It’s the little changes people will take note of.”

In all, there will be 73 Olympians in the field, including 10 gold medalists, 13 silver medalists and nine bronze medalists.

“Some of the best athletes will be here on the blue oval in April,” Boldon said.

“You’re going to see dozens of past Olympians, Drake Relays champions.”

Coming off an Olympic year last year, an athlete’s profile is at its highest.

“When someone wins an Olympic gold medal, their value has never been higher in their mind, the public’s mind,” Boldon said.

Drawing an Olympic-caliber athlete is not always easy for the relays.

“It can be a challenge,” Boldon said. “We’re making sure their idea, for their value fits within our budget,” Boldon said.

For some of the athletes

who have been around awhile, it may be their last hurrah at Drake.

“It’s an interesting balance between the pride and true long term favorites. There’s lots of people that have been cheering them on since 2005 for a number of athletes.

Their days in the sport of track and field are finite.

Every athlete has a finite career. Some of them have been coming to Drake Stadium since 2005 and earlier.

In 2017, they’ve been around more than once. We see the crowd pay homage, or cheer them on one last time.”

The veterans mix in with recent NCAA stars who are now professional, or those who did not qualify for Rio. Boldon noted the World Championships are coming to the United States for the first time in 2021, being held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

DENISON — Both the Creston boys and girls soccer squads traversed the long road to Denison and came away with losses to the Monarchs Friday.

The Panther girls were involved in yet another physical Hawkeye 10 matchup that matched two teams of similar talent levels, but fell 4-2 in penalty kicks after entering overtime tied at 1-1.

Though the Monarchs struck first regulation, Karlmen Chuong responded just as coach Kim Lauffer has been hoping for all season.

A ball played into the box bounced off of a teammate, Chuong targeted the ball and booted it through for the tying goal.

“She just knocked it in there, she looked kind of shocked that it did what she wanted it to do,” Lauffer

Ligouri said. “Really established herself as a solid second baseman after playing shortstop her whole career and pitcher. We couldn’t be happier.”

The determined but pleasant demeanor that Briley approaches the game of softball has Ligouri singing her praises for even more reasons.

“The way she carries herself, she comes to play every day and she’s just a great teammate and so respected by everybody and she’ll probably be a captain next year,” Ligouri said.

Sams, a former all-state softball player in Missouri, found easing back to softball in 2017 as a sophomore none-too-difficult, playing in left field and hitting in the three-hole for much of the season.

“She’s had such a great transition from basketball to softball,” Cassady said.

Cassady believes Sams could easily find another place to play in basketball or softball.

Craig has roamed center and has been an energetic presence in the field, and from the top of the lineup, all season. Craig scored two runs and tallied two hits, two runs and two RBIs Sunday.

“She’s always been our spark plug. We’re going to miss her,” Cassady said.

“She’s done a lot for this program. Two-year starter. I don’t see her doing anything else but being successful.”

JoHana McGuire pitched in limitied fashion in game two. She has taken work off Schiefen’s back as the squad’s number two pitcher.

“JoHana has done a lot for this program. Has put a lot of effort in,” Cassady said.

Eckels has been driven to do well. “It has been a steady progression over the years. She has been working hard since she first started with the hurdles and the times dropping has been the payoff for all of the hard work,� Bryson said. “She is a textbook example of what happens when a talented athlete works hard.�

Eckels can drop even more time, Bryson noted. “She is transitioning from a ‘four-step’ hurdler to a ‘three-step.’ When she masters that, she will be even faster,� Bryson said.

On the girls side, Zoie Lacy picked up a win in the 200-meter dash, while Kylie Shields won the 3,000. Lacy was second in the 400, Shields was second in the 1,500. The 4x100 and 4x800-meter relay teams placed second. Hailey Chew was third in the long jump, while Zadie Hatfield was third in the discus.
