HCI Hospice Care Services of Creston is hosting its first-annual Bucket Bash 6:30 p.m. Thursday at The Lobby, 301 W. Adams St. in Creston, to raise funds for its quality of life program. The quality of life program helps hospice care patients fulfill their end-of-life bucket list wishes. “All the money we raise will go back into the Creston area community to help people fulfill things on their bucket list,” said Mary Jo Borcherding, cochair of the Bucket Bash comm i t t e e . Borcherding “A lot of

times, you’ve got a caregiver that maybe has to quit work so money is tight. Some of the things we’ve done in the past have been providing gas cards. We’ve helped pay some utility bills.” Other wishes granted have included art supplies for a patient who wanted to paint pictures for her grandchildren, a photography session for family portraits, and planning and putting together of a wedding. This is the first year for the Bucket Bash event. “We’ve always been able to do these bucket wishes, but we’ve always used foundation money,” Borcherding said. “Since HCI has taken over the hospice house, our advisory board, we decided it’s time we did a fundraiser and paid it back. This is something we’re hoping to BASH | 2A

Man’s body recovered from pond in Urbandale

WINTERSET – On a quiet gravel road northeast of Winterset, a steady stream of locals and visitors took time out of their Easter weekend to stop and see the charred, skeletal remains of one of the area’s iconic covered bridges. Madison County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a potential fire just before 6 a.m. Saturday morning. By the time emergency crews arrived on the scene, the Cedar Covered Bridge was engulfed in flames. “It is just awful, I could not believe it happened for a second time,” said Heather Riley, director of the Madison County Chamber of Commerce. “We are such a small town and the covered bridges are a big

part of our brand. They weren’t just bridges, it was like six additional family members for the community.”

The bridge did not have electricity or lighting source and there were no storms in the area Saturday morning for potential lightning

URBANDALE (AP) — A dive team has recovered the body of a man from a pond in the Des Moines suburb of Urbandale. Police were first called to the Extended Stay America hotel around 9 p.m. Saturday, where a man reported that his brother and another man had been swimming in the

pond near the hotel when one of them went missing. Officers couldn’t find him Saturday night. The Polk City dive team was called in early Sunday morning, and divers found the body a little before 2 p.m. Police haven’t released the man’s name. An autopsy was ordered.
