These pieces of art, created by members of the Southwest Iowa Shutterbugs, are on display throughout April at the Depot Gallery in Creston. “Rainy Afternoon,” shown right, is a photo printed on canvas that was taken by Sheila Sutton near the Madison County Historical Society in Winterset. Also pictured is “Blue Eyed Girl,” a photo of a kitten, taken by Kathy Rohrig.

This month, the Creston Depot Gallery is filled with snapshots of significant moments – a bronco reared up as its rider prepares to hold on for eight seconds, an old building and windmill viewed through a downpour of rain and a man looking out a window of a train with his reflection captured. The Southwest Iowa Shutterbugs camera club has a collection of photos – some framed, some printed on canvas – on display at the Depot Gallery for the month of April. Many of the landscapes, portraits and abstracts on display are also for sale. “It is an incredible variety of photos,” said Brian Zachary, gallery manager. “The

scape photos in this group are really excellent. And, the portraits have great narrative quality.” T h e photography c l u b , which started eight Zachary y e a r s ago, has about 30 members who meet on the first and third Thursdays of each month. The photographers are of a variety of ages and skill levels, and they capture an array of subject matter. The Shutterbugs were one of the first art groups in Creston and one of the first groups to show at the Depot Gallery, Zachary said. “They just want to show

people who are interested in photography to join their club,” he said. “Most of the (photos) are figurative in that they represent something. Others have a more abstract quality that are more about line and shape and less about content.”

Kim Scharfenkamp

Shutterbug member Kim Scharfenkamp of Mount Ayr has been in the club for about three years. For this exhibit, she is showing a few of her photos. Scharfenkamp snapped the bronc riding photo at the Allendale, Missouri, rodeo in 2014. “It tells a whole story of that eight seconds or however long the (rider) was on,” Zachary said. For Scharfenkamp, the photo has a deeper meaning.

“My great-grandparents are all from the Allendale area, and we always go to the rodeo,” Scharfenkamp said. “After I took it, I decided it was good enough to put in the Iowa State Fair. It got an honorable mention up there in 2015. It was just a nice picture, and I really value (Allendale).” Scharfenkamp also took the photo of the man, which is her husband, looking out a train window in 2015. She titled it “Deep in Thought.” “We were on the train to Boone for Valentine’s Day, and I looked over, and he was looking out the window, and there’s kind of his reflection in the window,” Scharfenkamp said. “It also was displayed at

DES MOINES (AP) — Planned Parenthood in Iowa would have no state funding under a budget bill advanced Thursday by some House Republicans, but the proposal is not expected to have enough support in the Democratic-majority Senate. The House Appropriations Committee voted along party lines for language in a health and human services budget bill that would remove Medicaid funding for family

DES MOINES — State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald encourages Iowa taxpayers to make the most of their tax refunds by investing them in College Savings Iowa. “I would also like to remind Iowans that there is still time to contribute for 2015 and claim a tax deduction of up to $3,163 per College Savings Iowa account,” Fitzgerald said. New this year, Iowa taxpayers may elect to contribute to their College Savings Iowa account up through the tax deadline for filing an individual Iowa state income tax return, which is May 2. “This is a great opportunity to use your federal tax return to open a new College Savings Iowa account or contribute to your current accounts, and still receive the 2015 Iowa state tax deduction,” Fitzgerald added. College Savings Iowa is designed to provide families a tax-advantaged way to save money for their children’s higher education. It only takes $25 to open an account, and anyone – parents, grandparents, friends and relatives – can invest in College Savings Iowa on behalf of a child. Participants who are Iowa taxpayers can deduct contributions up to $3,188 per beneficiary from their 2016 adjusted gross income, and there are no income or residency restrictions. Adjusted annually for inflation. If withdrawals are not qualified, the deductions must be added back to Iowa taxable income.
