White House aides defend Trump’s wiretapping claim WASHINGTON (AP) — White House officials on Monday defended President Donald Trump’s explosive claim that Barack Obama tapped Trump’s telephones during last year’s election, although they won’t say where that information came from and left open the possibility that it isn’t true.

In televised interviews, Kellyanne Conway and Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump firmly believes the allegations he made on Twitter over the weekend.

DEATHS Lenox

Charles F. Palma, 90, of Lenox, formerly of Prescott, passed away Friday, March 3, 2017, at Afton Care Center in Afton.

Celebration of life services will be 1:30 p.m.

Wednesday, March 8, at Pearson Family Funeral Service and Cremation Center, 809 W. M o n t - Palma gomery St., in Creston with Masonic services by Prescott Circle Lodge No. 555. Rev. Tim Maxa of Lenox Presbyterian Church will officiate.

Open visitation is from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Bohemian National Cemetery in rural Prescott. Memorials may be directed to Williamson American Legion Hall, Prescott Circle Lodge No. 555 or Vintage Park Assisted Living. Online condolences may be left at www.pearsonfuneralhomes.com.

A baby boy was born Sept. 24, 1926, on the Palma homestead, one mile west of Williamson to Charles L. Palma and Mae J. (Patera) Palma. They named their only son, Charles “Chuck” Frank Palma.

At the age of 6, the Williamson Country School teacher paid a visit to Charles and Mae and informed them that Chuck would have to learn English because she had no intention of learning Bohemian. He had many fond memories of his school days. At the end of his eighth-grade year, it was decided Chuck was needed to work full-time on the family farm. He remained on the farm until his health required him to retire in 1988. Chuck was proud of his custom combining, growing corn and beans and his black Angus cattle.

He was given his first accordion at approximately 3 years old. Chuck never learned to read music and only needed to hear a song once to play it. He earned extra money playing at dances and winning talent shows.

In the fall of 1947, he met Melba Marie Graby on a blind date and fell head over heels in love

with her. They were united in marriage on May 1, 1948, and lived on the Palma family farm. To this union were born four children, Linda Marie, Paul Douglas, Judith Mae and David John. The children’s mother passed away in November 2014.

Chuck had great pride being a 50-year Masonic member of Circle Lodge No. 555 in Prescott, where he once served as Worshipful Master and also, a 50-year member of Prescott Eastern Star. He was a 32nd Degree Master Mason, member of the Scottish Rite and ZaGa-Zig Shriners. Much time was spent fundraising for the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, dressing up as a clown and riding a three-wheeler and helping run the karousel in parades throughout the state.

After retiring, Chuck enjoyed entertaining at nursing homes and participating in musical jams.

He continued playing the accordion until his final days.

At the 2010 Iowa State Fair, Chuck was honored to receive the Century Farm Award with all of his family present. The farm remains in the family to this day.

Throughout his lifetime, Chuck made many friends, loved to visit, share a cup of coffee and a good joke. Most of all, he loved watching his children grow up and was proud of their accomplishments. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he always referred to his great-granddaughters as “our babies.”

Chuck is survived by his children, Linda Carmichael (Larry Antisdel), Paul Palma, David Palma and Judy Cross (Forrest). Also surviving are his grandchildren, Jason Cross (Angie), Jared Cross (Monique) and Clinton Carmichael (Tammy); great-grandchildren, Kally Carmichael, Chloe Cross and Gracie Cross; and step-grandchildren, Luke Samo (Kayla), Benji Samo (Katy), Rylan Jackson, Gage Samo and Liam Samo. Special cousins from Chicago and Iowa City also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Nicole Carmichael and step-grandson Matt Samo.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Vintage Park Assisted Living Complex in Lenox for their attentive care the past three years.

Woman’s body found inside car spotted upside down in creek DES MOINES (AP) — Authorities say a woman’s body was found inside a car that had crashed into a Polk County creek.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says a bicyclist spotted the car in Fourmile Creek a little before 8 a.m.

Sunday while passing by on a bike trail.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Brandon Bracelin says the car was on its top in 3 feet of water and couldn’t be seen from the nearby roadway. He couldn’t say how long the car had been in the creek. A recovery crew removed the vehicle from the water.

The woman’s name hasn’t been released.

William Ray Creston

William Gordon Ray of Creston was lovingly welcomed by his Savior to his heavenly home, on Feb. 25, 2017, leaving this life at the Creston N u r s - Ray ing and Rehab Care Center in Creston. A celebration of life memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 18, at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25, in Creston. Rev. Jim Morris will officiate. Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery south of Creston with military graveside rites by the Theodore J Martens Post 1797, Creston VFW. Open visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 17, with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Jerusalem United Methodist Church of Creston or Creston Animal Rescue Effort. Online condolences can be made at www.powersfh.com.

William Gordon Ray was born Sept. 8, 1927, at his maternal grandparents’ home in Adams County to Grace Roseletta (Hoskinson) Ray and William Albert Ray. He was the oldest of three children. He grew up in Adams County in the rural family home which

his father built. After graduating early from Creston High School, Bill served in the U.S. Army and then was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy. In 1951, he graduated with a degree in animal husbandry from Iowa State University.

On June 17, 1951, he married the love of his life, Loretta Mabel Agan in Dallas, Iowa. They shared 65 wonderful devoted years together. Following his graduation and marriage, he and Loretta lived just west of Kent where he farmed with his father.

A daughter, Martha, was born in 1952 and a son, William Jr., was born in 1954. The family moved to Ames in 1955 when Bill began employment with Doane Agricultural Services Company as a farm manager and rural appraiser for several counties. A daughter, Margaret, was born in 1955. In 1957, the family moved to a new home in Nevada. In 1962, a son, Wesley, was born.

Bill continued to work for the company until he accepted a position in 1965 as farm manager with First Trust and Savings Bank in Kankakee, Illinois, where he worked until 1970. He then returned to the family farm for about a year before moving into Creston where he lived the remainder of his life.

After moving to Creston, Bill worked as a real estate agent/broker and then later, as an insurance agent for Farm Bureau Insurance Agency. He and

Loretta also owned and operated the Dairy Sweet in Creston from 1971-74 before deciding to move the building to Afton as the newly named Stars and Stripes drive-in restaurant from 1974-81. Bill began his own appraisal business – Ray Appraisal in 1981, and retired from the business in June 2011. His son, Wes, was his partner during that time. During those years, Bill taught real estate pre-licensing at Southwestern Community College and Indian Hills Community College. He was also a member and past president of the Iowa Chapter of the National Association of Master Appraisers and the Bluegrass Board of Realtors. He had also actively participated in Toastmasters, Lions and Kiwanis, serving as president in each.

Bill had a strong Christian faith and was active in the United Methodist Church in Ames, Nevada, Kankakee and Creston.

During those years, he served as Sunday school teacher, worked with youth, served on many committees and was a lay speaker for the United Methodist Church. He and Loretta had a deep love for their church family at Jerusalem United Methodist Church. Bill had a great variety of interests such as gardening, reading, carpentry, music, camping, traveling, a love of dogs and watching the Army-Navy football game. His greatest love was spending time

Separately, an Indiana newspaper reported that Vice President Mike Pence used personal email to conduct state business when he was governor of Indiana. The revelation recalled the use of personal email by Trump’s 2016 opponent, Hillary Clinton, when she was secretary of state. The issue dogged Clinton for most of the presidential campaign.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., said in a statement that the panel “will follow the evidence where it leads, and we will continue to be guided by the intelligence and facts as we compile our findings.”

Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said in a statement that the committee “will make inquiries into whether the government was conducting surveillance activities on any political party’s campaign officials or surrogates.”

Trump’s request carries some risk, particularly if the committees unearth damaging information about him or his associates. Committee Democrats will have access to the information and could wield anything negative

against the president. Asking Congress to conduct a much broader investigation than originally envisioned also ensures the Russia issue will hang over the White House for months.

Obama’s director of national intelligence, James Clapper, said nothing matching Trump’s claims had taken place.

“Absolutely, I can deny it,” said Clapper, who left government when Trump took office. Other Obama representatives also denied Trump’s allegation, which the FBI has asked the Justice Department to dispute, a U.S. official told The Associated Press on Sunday. The official wasn’t authorized to discuss the request by name and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The department, however, has issued no such statement. DOJ spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores declined to comment Sunday, and an FBI spokesman also did not comment.

Josh Earnest, who was Obama’s White House press secretary, said presidents do not have authority to unilaterally order the wiretapping of American citizens, as Trump has alleged was done to him. FBI investigators and Justice Department officials must seek approval from a federal judge for such a step.

Earnest accused Trump of leveling the allegation to distract from the attention being given to the Russia issue.

Likewise, Conway said that “credible news sources” suggested there was politically motivated activity during the campaign. But Conway also said Trump might have access to other information she and others don’t.

“He is the president of the United States,” Conway told Fox N e w s ’ “Fox & Friends.

“He has i n f o r m a - Conway tion and intelligence that the rest of us do not.”

Trump is said to be frustrated by his senior advisers’ inability to tamp down allegations about contacts between his campaign aides and the Russian government. with his wife, Loretta, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

By example, he showed his family how to have fun and how to love, be honest, respect and truly care for others.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the wonderful loving care and friendship that Care Initiative and Hospice has given to Bill and Loretta in the short year they have lived there.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta, of Creston; daughter, Martha Roseletta (Bill) Monroe of Jefferson; son, Wesley James Ray of Ft. Dodge; five grandchildren, Amanda (Mike) Hendrickson of Rochester, Minnesota; Andrea (Andy) Baker of Oskaloosa, Dr. Jared (Heather) Adams, M.D. of Oklahoma; Nathan (Vickie) of Dallas, Texas, and William G. “Liam” Ray III (who was named in honor of his grandfather and Uncle Will) of Ft. Dodge; five great-grandchildren, Katherine and Emily Hendrickson, Annalysa and Daniel Baker, and Jae Adams; three sisters-in-law, Shirley Ray of Lenox, Mary Schrader of Melcher-Dallas and Janet (David) Ritchie of Knoxville; and many nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his son William Gordon Ray Jr. in 1972 and daughter Margaret Mary (Ray) Adams in 2012; sister Lillian Beatty and brother W.D. ‘Doug’ Ray.

Trump said in the tweets that he had “just found out” about being wiretapped. Unclear was whether he was referring to having learned through a briefing, a conversation or a media report.

The president in the past has tweeted about unsubstantiated and provocative reports he reads on blogs or conservative websites.

The tweets stood out, given the gravity of the charge and the sharp personal attack on the former president. Trump spoke as recently as last month about how much he likes Obama and how much they get along, despite their differences.

“How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!” he tweeted, misspelling ‘tap.’

According to a Creston Police report, Charles and his wife, Nancy Ann Blakeslee, were Medicaid service providers through the Iowa Medicaid Consumer Choice Option program providing personal care services to a disabled Medicaid member. Between Sept. 29, 2015, and Jan. 15, 2016, Charles falsified time card records and billing claims in Nancy’s name to show she was providing service to the Medicaid member during the time Nancy was in a hospital or care facility and incapable of providing the service, for a total of $6,783.68. Between Jan. 1, 2015, and Jan. 15, 2016, Charles also submitted transportation reimbursement requests for transporting the Medicaid member to a day habilitation program on dates the member was absent and did not attend the program. The false time cards and transportation reimbursement requests caused Veridian Fiscal Solutions, the fiscal agent for the Consumer Choice Option program, to be deceived into paying for services not provided for a total of $5,132.16.

Blakeslee was released on $10,000 bond.

According to a Creston Police report, a female victim called the police for a domestic dispute that was happening. The female said she was in bed when Armstrong came home and started hitting her. The female went to the bathroom, locked herself in and Armstrong began pounding on the bathroom door. Armstrong cracked the bathroom door. The female did not want Armstrong to smash the door so she opened it. Armstrong shoved her outside and locked the door behind the female.

The female then called the police.

Armstrong was released on $300 bond.

Conference champions SWCC men win first ICCAC title, have home court in regional tournament ■

MASON CITY — Mission number one was accomplished for the Southwestern Community College men’s basketball team Saturday.

The NJCAA Division II top-ranked Spartans locked up the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference regular season title and the top seed in the Region XI tournament with a hardfought 83-78 win at North

Iowa Area Community College.

T h e Spartans, 29-1, open the postseason T u e s d a y Lorensen hosting eight seed Little Priest Tribal College at 7 p.m. in Creston.

Tuesday’s winner faces either fourth-seeded Ellsworth or fifth-seeded DMACC Thursday at the higher seed.

Southwestern won its first league title in school history.

“It wasn’t easy, but we found a way to get it done,” said coach Todd Lorensen.

Southwestern now has home court advantage throughout the Region XI

Tournament.

The Spartans had to endure a rough night at the free throw line and an efficient NIACC offense to hold on for win number 29.

Southwestern was an uncharacteristic 15-of-31 at the free throw line, including 10-of-20 in the second half.

It allowed NIACC to gradually work its way back into the game after Southwestern pushed the lead to 13 early in the second half.

“We had a good start to the second half. Unfortunately we were not able to extend that,” Lorensen said.

NIACC capitalized on its possessions. Southwestern was effective in drawing fouls, but could not make enough of their visits to the charity stripe.

The Spartans then picked up a couple of stops and converted a couple more times at the free throw line to hold on.

Having a tough test right ahead of the regional tournament was good for the Spartans.

“In hindsight, it worked out,” Lorensen said. “We had a competitive game.

It had the feel of a tournament-type atmosphere.

Panthers celebrate successful season Strong senior class recognized, underclassmen given motivation for next season ■

MASON CITY — The SWCC women’s basketball

team heads into postseason play in the midst of its first losing streak since early January.

Saturday’s 85-70 loss at North Iowa Area Community College ended Southwestern’s regular season.

Southwestern (16-14, 5-9) struggled in the high-possession game, turning the ball over 32 times. The two

NIACC turned it over 19 times itself and shot just 25of-83 (30.1 percent) in what was a sloppy affair.

medalists, two finalists and one champion. Also, the program qualified for the state dual team tournament for the 13th straight season.

“That’s why we’re here — to celebrate them,” Frain said.

A highlight of the state duals came when senior Jacob Goodson was recognized in front of the Panther faithful gathered at Wells Fargo Arena one final time.

“That was awesome when the whole crowd stands up.

Win or lose, it’s one of the best things about the state duals.”

The senior class, while highlighted by the gaudy achievements of Chase Shiltz and outstanding resume of Kadon Hulett, brought much to the program as a whole, all seven of them.

“That senior class was fairly incredible,” Frain said.

“Over the year in interviews I did, everybody wanted to make it about Chase and Kadon. They had unbelievable years. Everything about them was awesome. If you look at the rest of the group, it was pretty impressive from top to bottom. We’ve had a lot of great seniors.”

Frain pointed out the success the team had at the JV state tournament.

“We try to make that as big as we can,” Frain said.

“People don’t realize how over the years we’ve had a lot of good wrestlers go there and do well. That makes them bigger and better down the road.”

Frain thanked numerous people in and outside of the program for their hard work this season including the News-Advertiser, KSIB radio, parent reps, the coaching staff from Express Wrestling all the way through the high school level, trainer Chris Leonard, volunteers Kevin Webb, Steve Wilson and the coaches’ wives.

Three team members were recognized for earning academic All-Hawkeye 10 honors: Wheat, Hulett and manager Alexis Baker.

This year’s crop of freshmen took big steps forward, Frain said.

“The learning curve is steep at the beginning of the year,” Frain said. “I guarantee you it’s not easy to go home and tell how tough practices have been.”

This year’s sophomore class was thin on numbers, with only three participating.

What they lack in volume, they’ll need to make up for in leadership next season.

“I can’t tell you how important for us these two (Trevor Kinyon and Tristan Travis) are for our future,” Frain said. “We’re going to ask a lot out of these guys in the next 12 months. We’re expecting a lot out of them.”

This year’s juniors are a vital piece of the future of Panther wrestling.

“You always lose a great group of seniors,” Frain said. “For the seniors coming back, we have to make

sure we’re ready. We need to make progress with this group. No doubt, that’s going to happen next year.”

Frain noted how many steps the class took this season, led by state placewinner Mitchel Swank.

Senior recollections Frain spoke about each one of the seniors.

He credited Carson Wheat for overcoming physical adversity and sticking with the sport.

“He loved being a part of the program,” Frain said.

“He’s why we succeed.

We’ve got that kid that will do whatever it takes. .... We have those kids that want to be here.”

Frain talked about how much Goodson matured this season, even after a heartbreaking loss at districts.

“Anybody who knows Jacob knows how proud they (seniors and coaches) were of him,” Frain said. “The kid grew up so much. I’ve never been more proud of a kid, his attitude, behavior, progress he’s made. This senior group helped him. It was unbelievable.”

Frain credited Trevor Marlin with making his own way, even if it wasn’t easy being the little brother of former Panther great Jake Marlin.

“Sometimes it’s not easy being the little brother,” Frain said. “He paved his own way. He’s a different kid, has a different attitude.”

Frain thanked the future Graceland University wrestler for sticking with it.

“He never missed a practice, did the extra stuff,” Frain said. “He likes wrestling. He had a great career. We’re proud of him.

Now he has an opportunity to go wrestle in college (at Graceland).”

Frain noted how wrestling was not always Cody Tanner’s favorite activity.

But Tanner stuck with it, becoming a varsity regular his past two seasons.

“Wrestling definitely was not his favorite thing to do,” Frain said. “He wasn’t here to be a great wrestler, but to be a great football player. I totally respect that.”

Tanner’s growth this season left Frain wishing he could have Tanner back for another year.

“With heavyweight, that’s the one weight class when they’re seniors, you need them one more year. Physically they’re wrestling bigger guys. Cody was on the edge of being a really good heavyweight and now we’re losing him.”

Frain knows Tanner will do well in Maryville as a member of the Northwest Missouri State football team.

“He will have a great career. They will love having him on the team,” Frain said.

Jackson Mikkelsen left a legacy of hard work and determination.

That showed this season at the state tournament. A tough quarterfinal round loss could’ve left Mikkelsen down, but he rallied back to place third at 195 pounds in Class 2A. “That’s impressive. He

fought all the way back, got some pins along the way, scored a lot of team points for us,” Frain said. “Having Jack on the team was a blast.

I’m so proud we had him here. He’s a fighter. He’s a kid you want on the team.”

Hulett’s character on and off the mat, through some amazing highs and devastating lows will leave an impact on the program for years to come.

“When you start talking about quality kids, hard workers, willing to do anything that’s asked, that’s Kadon,” Frain said. “He helped Jacob along, that’s a perfect example.”

Hulett’s selfless attitude became something Frain was accustom to seeing.

“Sometimes you almost take it for granted all the

things he does,” Frain said.

“Wrestling aside and he’s a great wrestler, he does everything you ask and thensome. It doesn’t matter if it’s in the classroom, the hall, picking up dirty towels, from day one.”

How Hulett handled himself this season was a lesson to all.

“He wanted it, we wanted it. It didn’t happen. It’s one of those deals,” Frain said.

“Things aren’t fair. When someone has good character, you want it for them.”

Frain looks forward to what Hulett will do in Maryville with the Northwest Missouri State football team.

“I’ll have fun going to Maryville the next four years watching Creston wrestlers,” Frain said. “It was great hav-

ing him here. He made it easy as a coach.”

At times, Frain noted it was hard not to get caught up in expecting that Shiltz would win and win big every time out.

“My biggest regret as a coach is that we took Chase for granted, that he was going to win,” Frain said. “As a coach, you know he’s going to win. We should enjoy every win. Sometimes in wrestling you don’t do that.”

On and off the mat, like Hulett, Shiltz was a role model.

“You’ve got that wrestler here with character that stands here — what he’s done with the youth, the whole team, Chase led the way. Chase has been the leader.

“I’m blessed to be his

coach.”

Frain knows Shiltz will enjoy a successful football career in Maryville.

“I don’t think they realize the talent they are getting. I think they know what they’re getting,” Frain said.

“I can’t wait to see how great he’s going to be.”

While Frain normally touches on the season’s disappointments, he noted there weren’t much this year.

“There was nothing I was disappointed in in our kids,” Frain said. “They brought what they had every day. No matter how hard we were on them, how tough we were on them, mentally sometimes they getting low, they gave us everything they had this year.”

Brodric Thomas stepped up with a game-high 28 points on 10-of18 shoot- Johnson ing, including 5-of-9 from three-point range. He added five steals and three assists. Johnson had 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting, with three assists and three steals.

KeShawn Wilson had nine points, but five of those came at key points in the second half. Jamil Maddred added nine points.

Jason Gumm led NIACC with 20 points. Ben Moss had 18 points, while Tim Trousell added 15 points.

UP NEXT —Now Southwestern prepares for the Region XI Tournament.

Being at home will be good for the Spartans.

“It’s a great feeling to know we play at home as long as we keep surviving and advancing,” Lorensen said. “We’ve been really good on our home court the last three years. It’s been a really good place for us.”

Lorensen looks for a big crowd this week.

“It will be great to have a good atmosphere,” Lorensen said. “During the week, we’ll have the students here. It will be an exciting time for the students, community and the community of Creston as a whole.”

Southwestern defeated Little Priest (2-23) twice in early December.

Lorensen expects the Bears have improved since those games in Nebraska.

“We’ll scour some film, see how they’ve evolved,” Lorensen said. “I’m sure they’ve added some wrinkles, some offensive and defensive schemes. I’m sure we have too.”

Practices will be key before the game.

“It’s a situation where we don’t have a lot of time. We have to rely on habits we’ve built during the course of the season,” Lorensen said.

Southwestern’s players and coaches are ready for the second season to begin.

“The guys are excited,” Lorensen said. “I know they will keep the positive energy going into the game.”

Iowa State backs plan to give up key energy research center IOWA CITY (AP) — Iowa State University is supporting a plan to transfer the state’s 27-year-old center for energy research to Gov. Terry Branstad’s administration.

The university confirmed Monday that the Iowa Energy Center is expected to move to the Iowa Economic Development Authority, which has an energy office that works to assist the private sector.

A state energy plan recently unveiled by Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds recommended those two agencies collaborate closely. A university spokesman says the transfer will give the center a “new and expanded role.�

Ralph Rosenberg of the Iowa Environmental Council says he sees no reason for the shift and worries the center will lose its research independence.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst’s (RIA) regional directors will hold traveling office hours throughout the month of March in all 99 counties in Iowa. Representatives from Ernst’s office will be available in counties throughout the state to assist Iowans with problems or questions about eligibility involving issues like Social Security, veterans’ benefits, military affairs, passports, immigration issues and other federal programs. Ernst will not be at the traveling office hours.
