and March 13, with the 10 restaurants receiving the most nominations being named finalists. More than 9,200 nominations were submitted via paper ballots, online and text. So what makes the Elm’s Club burger so special it’s been named a top 10 finalist five years in a row? “I think probably because it’s handmade,” said Elm’s Club co-owner Donna King. “It’s not a frozen product. It’s never frozen.

Elm’s Club in Creston has turned into a dynasty. The popular local eatery has been named a top 10 finalist in the Iowa’s Best Burger contest for the fifth straight year. The contest, put on by the Iowa Beef Industry Council and Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, tabulated nominations between Feb. 13

We make them fresh every day. We have our secret spices we put on them. Whoever is cooking tries to pay attention to putting out a good product. We really want it to look good and taste good.” King said other comments she’s received about the burger include it’s juicy, it’s fresh and it’s enough to fill a person up. Elm’s Club has become a staple among the top 10 finalists.

“To us, it’s a pretty big deal only because we are such a small unit compared to some of the other restaurants we’re competing against,” King said. “We like to think it’s a pretty big deal. There’s like 487 restaurants statewide that are entered into this thing.” Now that Elm’s Club has been selected as a top 10 finalist again, the restaurant’s famous burger will be ELM’S | 2A

BUCKNER, Kentucky (AP) — One of the House Republican rebels, Kentucky Rep. Tom Massie, wasn’t just “no” on the GOP health care bill to replace Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act. Massie was “hell no.” That won over Mary Broecker, president of the Oldham County Republican Women’s Club and a strong proponent of a full-blown repeal of the 2010 law. “When he came out against this bill, I thought, ‘I trust him so this must be the right way,’” the 76-yearold retired teacher said of Massie this week as she sat at a coffee shop near her La-

Grange home. Defying President Donald Trump on the seven-year Republican Party promise to repeal and replace “Obamacare” sounds like political suicide, especially in the congressional districts Trump won handily. Yet in Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee and Iowa in the bitter aftermath of the GOP’s epic failure, Republicans who blocked the legislation have won praise from constituents for stopping what many saw as a flawed plan, either in the legislation’s substance or strategy. Farmers helping farmers By SCOTT VICKER

SHANNON CITY – On a chilly March afternoon, Tony Allen and his son, James, along with help from Buxton Custom LLC employees, loaded about 30 bales of hay onto a trailer near Shannon City. With wildfires running rampant through parts of Oklahoma and Kansas, many farmers in those areas are in dire need of help. So Tony and Jake decided to help out by donating hay. “I just know how it is when you’re short of feed,” Tony said. “They’re completely broke when this happens. When you lose cows and lose Allen all your feed, it’s pretty tough to get

going again. I know down in Oklahoma, they still haven’t got rain on some of that ground. It’s going to take some moisture to get any grass to grow on it. So, it’s going to be a long summer down there.” Tony has heard reports of more than 650,000 acres being burned in certain areas and said more than 100,000 miles of fence, at about $10,000 to $12,000 per mile of fence, has been lost, as well. The 30 bales Tony and James donated could provide a week’s worth of hay for some farmers. For others, it might only last a day. “This is some pretty decent hay we kept back for us,” Tony said. “We had sold a little hay early and we weren’t going to sell this. When you send hay that far, you want to send the best you’ve got.” There was no hesitation HAY | 2A
