On Wednesday, Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, visited Union County as part of a 99-county tour. In Creston, she stopped at the Southern Prairie YMCA for a public tour and discussion on health, and then she visited Wellman Dynamics for a private tour. “There is a huge push for health and wellness initiatives now and really focusing on preventative measures, so I wanted to hear from the folks on the ground here – the things they think are exciting and the things we can do better,” Ernst said. “At Wellman Dynam- Sen. Iowa House, Senate pass legislation on education DES MOINES (AP) — Lawmakers in the Iowa Legislature have approved legislation that would increase K-12 education spending for the upcoming fiscal year. The Democratic-controlled Senate and the Republican-majority House both voted Wednesday in support of the legislation, which would increase basic aid for K-12 schools by 2.25 percent for the next academic year. A special committee tasked with reaching a funding agreement announced a deal Tuesday, but it needed formal approval in the chambers. It now heads to Gov.

T e r r y Branstad. A spokesman says the governor believes the compromise is Branstad “reasonable and responsible.” Educators say the funding deal won’t provide enough money and school districts will be forced to make financial cuts. Some lawmakers in both chambers acknowledged the criticism but said there’s limited funding in the fiscal year that begins in July.
