Andrew Holly of Bristol, England, may drift into the Guinness World Records with the help of a few Crestonians. On an average day, Holly, chief pilot and operations director of Exclusive Ballooning, operates branded hot air balloons for high profile clients from around the world. But, in February, Holly and his team temporarily closed shop and set out to crush a hot air ballooning record. Their goal:
to fly all 48 contiguous U.S. states in the fastest time during a calendar month. “I’ve always wanted to roam America with a balloon in the truck,” the 42-year-old Holly said in a blog. “Road trips in the U.S. are so much fun and the option to stop off and meet up with balloonists along the route and see as much as we can from the air is fabulous.” Holly’s adventure started Feb. 6 with the team taking their first flight from Louisville, Kentucky. Their route was completely dependent upon weather, launching and landing
their balloon daily from different locations — such as Cadillac Ranch, Texas, Meteor Crater, Arizona, Temecula, California, Las Vegas, Nevada and Billings, Montana — the American landscape showcased it’s diverse terrain and weather. On March 13, Iowa became the 47th state for Holly and his team to check off the list when Holly fllew in Creston. Roger Saxton of Creston was at McDonald’s when he saw the large red balloon in the distance as it was preparing for take off from Creston Municipal Airport.
He decided to check out the launch for himself. They asked Saxton to be a witness for the Iowa leg of their record attempt. “It was just a really neat experience,” Saxton said. “We talked and they were so professional ... friendly.” Saxton joined the chase crew and followed Holly’s team as they flew across Creston, landing on a the farm of Greg and Stacey Buxton. “One of the most enjoyable flights of the whole trip tonight,” Holly wrote on his HOLLY | 2A

Southwestern Community College will be the main campground when an estimated 20,000 RAGBRAI cyclists invade Creston July 25. That decision was made this morning by the Creston RAGBRAI committee. The other two campgrounds will be McKinley Park and Creston high school and middle school. In all, these three have more than 80 acres of camping space. “They will be coming into town on Highway 25 and going right by the college. So, that made it an easy choice (as Gerharz the main c a m p ground),” said Ellen Gerharz, spokesperson for the Creston RAGBRAI committee. Jo Duckworth, emergency management coordinator in Union County, did express concern this morning regarding available shelter near McKinley Park if severe weather were to strike July 25 or July 26. The newest restroom in the park does
double as a storm shelter, but only has an occupancy of 50 people. “There might be a little more room in there (the restroom), but it would be like stacking cordwood,” D u c k worth said. Theref o r e , D u c k worth is Duckworth requesting that those who live near McKinley Park and even those west of McKinley Lake make their basements available to cyclists. Contact Duckworth at 641-782-1622 if you are willing to provide that shelter. “I will just need to know the capacity of their basement when they call,” Duckworth said. “Then we would assign their residence as a storm shelter. They will be given a sign to place outside their house.” Duckworth said Southwestern Community College and Creston Schools have larger storm shelters for cyclists to find cover, if needed, that day. Duckworth said she does plan to have a meteorologist in Creston that day and will be “very proactive” if RAGBRAI | 2A
Obama to back Belgium after attacks HAVANA (AP) — President Barack Obama pledged to “do whatever is necessary” to help Belgian authorities seek justice for the more than two dozen people who were killed Tuesday in explosions at the Brussels airport and the subway system. “We stand in solidarity with them in condemning these outrageous attacks against innocent people,” Obama said in H a v a n a , Obama where he was closing a historic three-day visit. He commented on the events in Brussels at the top of a keynote address to the Cuban
people. “We will do whatever is necessary to support our friend and ally Belgium in bringing to justice those who are responsible,” Obama said. He said America’s thoughts and prayers are with the people of Belgium. Obama said Tuesday’s attacks provided yet another reminder “that the world must unite,” regardless of nationality, race or faith in “fighting against the scourge of terrorism.” “We can and we will defeat those who threaten the safety and security of people all around the world,” he said. Obama was briefed earlier Tuesday on the attacks. He also telephoned Prime Minister Charles Michel to offer OBAMA | 2A
