It’s time for the annual fundraiser for St. Malachy School. The annual St. Malachy gala and fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday at Supertel Inn and Conference Center, with a cocktail hour at 5 p.m., prime rib dinner at 6 p.m. and auction at 7 p.m. The event, put on by the St. Malachy Foundation, is open to the public and tickets are available for $35 at St. Malachy School or the night of the event. “The event is to raise money. All proceeds are donated directly to St. Malachy Schools,” said Leslie Wurster, organizer. The funds are used for
ers, or school supplies, like books, for the students to use throughout the year. The prime rib dinner is catered by The Windrow, and music during the cocktail hour and dinner will be provided by Dustin Baird. After the dinner hour, West and Frey Auction Services, which has donated the services to the event, will begin the auction portion. “New this year is going to be four University of Iowa football tickets and a parking pass,” Wurster said. “We have miscellaneous things, too, from a Google Chromebook to Little Big Town tickets at the Iowa State Fair.” Other items include a Fitbit Blaze exercise de-
from Wilbur Ellis and Advanced Ag and tickets to a state bull-riding event. There will also be a silent auction and raffles to coincide with the live auction. St. Malachy School will also continue with the Spirit of St. Malachy Award. In 2016, the award was given to the volunteers at the Rectory Rerun. “The award is given to a person in the community who has continuously been involved in the growth of St. Malachy School,” Wurster said. Wurster said the event brings in between 200 and 240 people each year. For more information, there is a Facebook event titled St. Malachy Gala and Auc-
“I’m excited for the event this year. We have a lot of new items this year to kind of mix things up,” Wurster said. “It’s just a whole lot of fun and it’s a great chance to meet families and everyone with the school. It’s just a fun time.”

At least 2 dead after tornadoes touch down in central US LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Tornadoes touched down in the upper Midwest and northern Arkansas on Tuesday, killing at least two people, as a spring-like storm system posed a risk to 45 million people. Compact but strong storms known as supercells raked parts of the central U.S., causing damage from Arkansas to Iowa and Illinois. Wind-whipped wildfires destroyed homes in Texas. At Ottawa, Illinois, state Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Patti Thompson said a tornado victim was killed by an uprooted tree. Minor injuries
were also reported at an Ottawa nursing home, but Thompson said the number of those hurt in the twisters was not known. Meanwhile, one person was killed when an apparent tornado ripped through Perry County, Missouri, about 80 miles south of St. Louis. Eight to 10 homes near the small town of Perryville were badly damaged and winds were so strong that several vehicles were blown off of Interstate 55. Perry County Clerk Jared Kutz said search and rescue crews were going door-to-door and checking the highway to STORMS | 2A
