‘Palette of Possibility’ touring in Creston

Iowa Senate Republicans back education funding bill DES MOINES (AP) — Senate Republicans in Iowa approved an education funding bill Thursday, calling it sound budgeting, but some school officials argue it will increase class sizes and lead to teacher layoffs. The GOP-controlled chamber voted 28-21 for the legislation, which would go into effect for the budget year that starts in July. It has support in the Republican-led House, where a vote is scheduled Monday. The bill would add about $40 million to Iowa’s roughly $3 billion kindergarten through 12th grade budget.

“Palette of Possibility,” a low-language, sensory-friendly play developed for those on the autism spectrum and with other developmental delays, is going on a short tour in Iowa. Creston has been chosen as one of just a few stops on the short tour, with the play being offered Friday, Feb. 17. The play, put together by UNI Theatre Professor Gretta Berghammer and several of her students, will be performed once during the day at Creston Community Elementary School, and then in a public performance 6 p.m. in the South-

western Community College Instructional Center, room 180. Families can sign up to attend the free public show by calling The Learning Center of Southwest Iowa at 641-782-3849. Seating is limited, but no one will be turned away. “We were contacted by University of Northern Iowa as a possible host site for a touring theatrical production they’re putting on,” said Kathy Ralston, director of operations of The Learning Center of Southwest Iowa. “They were given our name by the Autism Society of Iowa because we’ve been, over the past few years, doing a lot of work with them and building programs locally through that

work.”

‘Palette of Possibility’ Berghammer said her idea for the play began about 11 years ago while working at an after-school program. “I had the opportunity to meet a young boy on the autism spectrum,” Berghammer said. “When I went to look for resources that could help me better support his talents using theatre and drama, I didn’t find anything that would help me. It begins with my quest to find ways to support him, and it develops into ‘What can I do for more young people?’” “Palette of Possibility” is the third play Berghammer has developed for individuals with developmental

If Democrats all vote against DeVos, they need only one more dissenting Republican to kill the nomination. Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, the Chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, praised DeVos’s work in reforming the school system through charter schools. “Teachers have more freedom and parents have more choices, they are public schools and Betsy Devos is in the forefront of helping create that opportunity for

WASHINGTON (AP) — Betsy DeVos cleared a major hurdle in the Senate to become the next education secretary despite vigorous opposition from Democrats. Senators voted 52-48 to cut off debate at dawn Friday, setting the stage for a final confirmation vote next week on President Donald Trump’s nominee. DeVos, a billionaire Republican donor, has faced fierce criticism from labor unions for her promotion of school choice. Democrats and labor unions have accused her of seeking to dismantle public education and divert funds to charter schools and have criticized her support for taxpayer-funded private school

In June a joint statement from four state health and public safety agencies warned the public about U4 as a response to a nonfatal overdose in eastern Iowa. In November the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration categorized U4 among drugs with the highest potential for abuse or addiction, comparable to methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin.

AMES (AP) — The increasing presence of a deadly synthetic opioid called “pink” or “U4” has prompted warnings from Iowa authorities. Ames police spokesman Geoff Huff told The Des Moines Register that the drug, also called “pinky,” has been identified in a handful of Ames cases since June. But he says there are other cases that police don’t know about.

delays. Berghammer said the play is for everybody, but it uses theatre techniques she feels best support individuals with developmental delays. “Palette of Possibility” explores color – red, blue and yellow. “We use the metaphor of painting the play,” Berghammer said. “Red paints play, blue paints water and yellow paints light. Each of the colors, in a unique way, takes the audience on a journey or adventure, an exploration into movement and sounds and shapes.” The play uses few words and does not tell a sequential story. It is a sensory-minded story that calls for audience participation

That means $73 would be added to what’s spent on each Iowa student, which is currently just less than $6,600. Republicans say the amount is all the state can responsibly afford amid spending constraints. Lawmakers recently cut roughly $117 million in spending from the current budget, a scenario that emerged in part from the Legislature tapping into surplus dollars over several years. The practice has left the state with little spending flexibility despite continued revenue growth.
