Much of the Creston News Advertiser coverage area is blacked out from watching the State Wrestling Tournament on television this week because of a deal between the Iowa High School Sports Network and Comcast, giving Comcast SportsNet Chicago exclusive television rights to the Iowa boys state championships for football, wrestling and basketball.

Moines. The IHSSN purchased the exclusive rights to state competitions from the IHSAA in 2014 for $730,000 over 10 years. On July 25, 2016, the IHSSN signed a three-year contract with Comcast SportsNet Chicago to be the exclusive home of the boys state championships for football, wrestling and basketball. It means those DISH or DirecTV customers whose providers offer the network can see events such as state wrestling, state basketball and the state football finals. Those in Creston with Mediacom cable, in Lenox with Lenox Municipal Utilities and Communications or other local cable service providers in central and western Iowa, such as Des Moines, Ames, Council Bluffs and Sioux City, are left in the dark when it comes to watching the state wrestling and state basketball on TV. In Lenox, and with Mediacom, it comes to serving the best interests of its customers when adding a channel to the lineup. “The first thing we need on a channel like this (CSN Chicago) is a number of

Changes made by the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa High School Sports Network will leave a majority of central and western Iowa in the dark when it comes to the upcoming state wrestling and basketball tournaments. That includes all of the Creston News Advertiser coverage area for those who do not have DirecTV or DISH. It’s a situation that will not have a resolution until at least 2019. The situation came about due to a partnership between the Iowa High School Athletic Association, headquartered in Boone, and the Iowa High School Sports Network, based in Des

people requesting it,” said John Borland, general manager of Lenox Municipal Utilities and Communications. “As a municipal utility, we have a communications board we would bring it to. They would give us their recommendation. If they said it would be a fit for the community, we would bring it before the board of trustees. We would give them the facts and figures and they would make a decision.” Adding a channel such as CSN Chicago would cost Lenox Municipal Utility customers an average of an extra $4 per month. “It’s not a cheap deal,” Borland said. Lenox offers ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN Classic, Fox Sports 1 and 2, Big 10 Network and Fox Sports Midwest as its sports channels. Cost is a consideration when adding a channel in Lenox. “You hope to be able to do it without raising rates to compensate for it,” Borland said. “We try our best to avoid it at all times, but there’s some times when it becomes necessary.”

Adding a channel such as CSN Chicago isn’t as simple as just adding it. Concerns over cost and the overall greater interest of the subscriber base have to be accounted for. “The price for the channel has to be assessed on a per-household basis regardless if anyone watches it. It costs a certain amount each month,” Borland said. Adding a channel is not as simple as calling one’s cable provider and asking it to be added, said Phyllis Peters, communications director for Mediacom, based in Des Moines. “Most companies have to really assess very carefully which sports channels they put in their lineup,” Peters said. “For most of us as cable operators, we face a very common concern from customers. They don’t want to be paying any more for the programming. We’re at the tipping point where they’re getting too many channels, then there’s all new sports channels.” Sports channels, in particular the RSNs, regional sports networks, such as CSN Chicago, Fox Sports TV | 2A

Creston Police officers have warned about a scam concerning Union County Law Enforcement Center, and for citizens to avoid responding to the call. According to a Creston Police press release sent out Friday, the police department has received reports from citizens who are receiving calls from the law center phone number, 641782-8402, with the person on the other end telling the citizen he or she has a warrant and officers will arrest them if they don’t pay bond over the phone using gift cards.

“First, we don’t notify if they have warrants over the phone,” said Creston Police Chief Paul Ver M e e r . Ver Meer “Secondly, we’re not going to have you pay with some of those cards.” People arrested on warrants are not contacted over the phone, as officers do not release warrant information that way. If people with warrants are not charged elsewhere, officers ask people to go to the law SCAMS | 2A

Rapid response CNA editor undergoes emergency medical procedure ■

Between eating half of his prime rib dinner at the Creston Parks and Recreation Board fundraiser event at the Eagles Lodge, and watching the end of Arizona’s basketball win over California on television, Saturday night was more eventful than Scott Vicker planned on. The Creston News Advertiser managing editor was at the Eagles Lodge to cover the fundraiser that featured comedian Josh Alton. But, Vicker never made it to the show. Seated near retired News Advertiser employee Birdie Sandeman and Cindy McDermott, respiratory ther-

apist at Greater Regional Medical Center, Vicker realized a piece of prime rib was lodged in his throat. This is not necessarily an unusual occurrence, as he had undergone an upper endoscopy, known as EGD, in 2013 to expand part of his esophagus when he was experiencing swallowing and digestive issues. “There is a stricture that causes part of the esophagus to be narrower than it should be,” Vicker explained. “Usually if there is a blockage it eventually works its way down. This time, when I took a Vicker drink of water I noticed it didn’t go all the way down. I could feel it.” Fortunately, Vicker’s RESPONSE | 10A
