MOUNT AYR — Two people died after a fire burned their house this morning in Benton, about 8 miles west of Mount Ayr. Linda Gale Haley, 68, and her husband, Robert Fey Haley, 72, both of Benton, died on scene after the fire 3:02 a.m. today at their home at 205 Main St., in Benton.

Ethan Westphal’s path to become the area’s first major league baseball player since Orient’s Dazzy Vance (1915 to 1935) has taken him to Scottsdale, Arizona, after a pit stop at his alma mater.

Westphal, ace of Central Missouri University’s Division II World Series team last spring, got a mid-summer call from the Colorado Rockies organization last year and pitched 33 innings for the Grand Junction (Colorado) Rockies as a long reliever.

His first spring training appearance begins March 3 at the Rockies complex in Scottsdale. From there, he’ll get his 2017 minor league assignment.

“I really don’t know where they’ll send me. It depends on how I do down there (in spring training),” said the 24-year-old son of Steve and Joyce Westphal of Winterset.

SWCC appearance Last Friday, the former SWCC all-region pitcher joined one of coach Pedro Hernandez’s practices to pitch a simulated game against the current Spartans. In 2015, Westphal was the Spartans’ top pitcher in a run to the regional finals, where they were defeated

“He definitely controls his arsenal more now,” Hernandez said.

“He knows what he’s doing and he has a good feel for all of his pitches now. He was really good for us, but now he locates way better.”

A couple of Spartan hitters shook their head and smiled after being “frozen” by one of Westphal’s patented sidearm sliders that start out coming straight at a righthanded batter’s torso before curving above the edge of the plate. And, that was with Westphal tipping off the batter and catcher what was coming.

“I wanted that for our guys,” Hernandez said.

“For them to have the opportunity to face a pro guy is great. It’s an eye opener.

Those connections led to the recent call from Kyle Vena, Royals director of baseball administration.

“One of my former players in the Kansas City Sluggers (local developmental league) is now one of the Royals directors of scouting and when they were discussing the idea of bringing in guest instructors, he mentioned my name,” Bucklin said. “So Kyle Vena called me and said, ‘I heard you know a little bit about baseball. Would you be interested in coming to spring training?’ I said sure, but I needed to clear it with my (St. James) assistant coaches. As it turns out, I’ll only miss three practices over spring break.”

Bucklin said he isn’t sure of his specific duties, but it seems he’ll be needed at practices for hitting and defensive work with minor league prospects.

Rod Sullivan, a Johnson County supervisor, said he believes the bill represents an infringement by the Iowa Legislature on local government authority.

“It’s such a slap in the face to local control,” Sullivan said.

“We’ll fight every piece of this that we can — everything from calling our legislators to going to court to civil disobedience.”

Westphal spent the winter at his parent’s home while working as a basketball referee for the Indianola Community School’s winter youth league and doing some private pitching lessons. He needed some down time for his arm coming off a busy spring and summer.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound righthander had pitched 100 innings for Central Missouri, compiling an 11-2 record

with 103 strikeouts and 2.60 earned run average. He was pitching in Wisconsin in a summer collegiate league when major league scout Brett Baldwin of Kansas City called him and said the Rockies were interested in signing him.

Westphal joined the Grand Junction Rookie League team on July 7 for $1,100 a month. It’s not a glamorous life, as one road trip was a 12-hour bus trip into Montana for a series before going another two hours for the next, resulting in a 14-hour ride back to Grand Junction.

“You get pretty familiar with the guys, I’ll put it that way,” Westphal said, smiling. He lived with a host family in Grand Junction.

Almost all of the games in the Pioneer League are played at high altitude, like the Colorado Rockies major league team, so pitching statistics aren’t always reflective of performance.

The ball carries farther off the bat than at sea level.

So, Westphal tried to keep a positive attitude about his

pro debut.

He finished 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA, pitching 33 innings in 14 games. He allowed 41 hits, four home runs and only five walks with 32 strikeouts. He had one starting assignment.

“The air is a little thinner, that’s for sure,” Westphal said. “The first time I pitched a bullpen there, nothing was moving. I was like, I finally get the call and now I can’t even pitch anymore! But I think your body starts to compensate and my stuff ended up being just fine.”

Westphal still has his repertoire of pitches, relying on a four-seam fastball over the top that runs 87 to 89 mph, and a sidearm two-seamer a little slower but with more movement; plus a slider and changeup from both arm angles.

Interstate-35 graduate Brandon Douglas, concluding a career as an infielder in the Detroit Tigers organization in 2014 before becoming a police officer in Winterset, is the only other professional player from this region in recent decades. Westphal said he’ll be patient in his pursuit, as long as he sees progress.

“I always said I’ll stop when they take the ball out of my hand,” Westphal said.

“It will be tough to give up when it’s gone. But, everybody has to stop playing sometime. I’ll say the main thing I’m looking for is to keep moving up, keep getting better and taking advantage of my opportunities.”

Westphal pitched at a high collegiate level in the Division II World Series.

He was asked about the difference as he faced young professional hitters.

“Most of the guys were either straight out of high school or coming out of college like me,” Westphal said. “The difference on the professional side is, the entire lineup is solid. You can’t take one second off. That number nine guy in pro ball

“I was talking to our football coach the other day about it,” Bucklin said. “It really feels like little league again. The enjoyment of being able to put that uniform on. Going to a professional facility and being on the field. It’s like renewed excitement about the game. We have a good team here at St. James and I enjoy coaching them, but this is something different and exciting. As a baseball guy, it will allow me to see things from a different perspective. Most of my time in 12 years of coaching has been spent in my own practices.”

Bucklin is not the only former area player employed by the Royals. “We’re trying to provide a seamless business climate in the state of Iowa,” he said.

Iowa last saw a minimum wage increase in 2009. At the committee meeting Thursday, Democratic Rep. Brian Meyer of Des Moines introduced an amendment to raise the state minimum wage to $11 per hour. Republicans voted it down, calling it a “separate issue” to address.

Adams County Sheriff

Bryan Garcia, 21, of Lenox was charged with carrying weapons 12:25 a.m.

Thursday in Adams County.

According to an Adams County Sheriff report, Adams County Sheriff’s deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Garcia near the intersection of 265th Street and Quince Avenue.

Upon further investigation, deputies located a loaded revolver under the passenger seat of the vehicle.

Garcia was being held on $2,000 bond.

he end of the year is a good time to take a look at your retirement savings situation, and consider whether you’re taking advantage of all applicable tax laws to set yourself up for post-working years.

We asked Melissa Sotudeh, a certified financial planner in the Washington, D.C., area, for some tax-smart tips on retirement savings.

What’s the most important thing about tax planning for retirement accounts?

You can control your income tax bracket to some extent by maximizing salary deferrals — for example, by putting as much as possible toward retirement accounts like 401(k) and IRA plans and thereby lowering your taxable income. Otherwise, you need to be as tax-efficient as possible as you save for college, retirement or other goals.

While you’re in a lower tax bracket, you may be able to take advantage of certain deductions, such as those for job-hunting or moving for employment, and tax credits, such as the child tax credit and the education credit.

You could also contribute to a Roth 401(k), which allows you to pay taxes at a lower rate now and then withdraw your Roth funds tax-free in retirement.

Once you are in a higher tax bracket, then salary deferral might be the best option for reducing taxable income.

Look to maximize contributions to 401(k) or Health Savings Accounts.

You should also approach your investment strategy as tax-efficiently as possible. This isn’t directly related to tax brackets, but to the tax treatment of investments in your portfolio. Strategies include holding the right investments in the right account (for example, holding tax-advantaged investments like municipal bonds in a taxable account), annual tax loss harvesting, and choosing funds with tax-efficient qualities like low turnover ratios.

What is the biggest mistake people make related to their income and tax brackets?

Season comes to end for OrientMacksburg girls STAFF REPORT

Creston/Orient-Macksburg senior Jacob Goodson and junior Cade Vicker have been sparing with each other in the practice room the past couple of weeks.

Each has their particular strengths they use against each other. The other has to fight off those positive things, work on their own skills.

The work they’ve done against each other has started to pay dividends at tournament time.

Now Goodson, Vicker and nine of their Panther teammates stand two wins away from their ultimate

ANITA — The Orient-Macksburg girls basketball team saw its season end in Anita at the hands of CAM Thursday, 69-32 in Class 1A Region 8 tournament action.

Kaela Eslinger’s 13 points led the Bulldogs.

Orient-Macksburg did a decent job offensively in the first half, scoring 20 points.

“We came out ready to play and started the game o f f well.

We just need to realize we can’t t a k e Eslinger a couple of plays off,” O-M coach Kim DeJongh said. “As the season has progressed we’ve had a few more step-up and score for us and we need them to continue that in the offseason and hit the gym. They showed a lot of potential tonight.”

Riley Rasmussen added six points, Hailey Johnson notched five, Katie Walter scored four and Haylee Gardner had four.

The Bulldogs surrendered a combined 44 points to CAM’s Madison Gettner and Paige McAfee.

“We’ll miss the inside presence of our lone senior (Walter),” DeJongh said.

Orient-Macksburg finished the season 4-17.

Iowa brings back Ken O’Keefe as QB coach.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa has brought back former offensive coordinator Ken O’Keefe as its quarterbacks coach.

Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz announced last Friday that O’Keefe, who was his coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 1999-2011, will return next season to work with Iowa’s signal callers.

O’Keefe spent the past five seasons with the Miami D o l phins in a variety of offensive O’Keefe coaching roles. Before that, he was crucial in the successful careers of Hawkeyes quarterbacks Brad Banks, Drew Tate and Ricky Stanzi.

O’Keefe will work under offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz, who played on Iowa’s offensive line when O’Keefe was coordinator in the mid-2000s.

Creston/Orient-Macksburg’s wrestlers step onto the mat with berths at next week’s state tournament on the line. Wrestling in the Class 2A District 3 Tournament starts at noon Saturday at Harlan High School.

“We go pretty hard in practice. He shows me a lot of things, makes me better,” Goodson said.

Vicker’s size at 126 pounds helps the lighter, more agile Goodson, who weighs in at 113 pounds.

“He’s heavier than me.

That helps build up my strength,” Goodson said.

“He ties me up a lot, which I can’t do. It helps me a lot with that. He’s helping me with my legs.”

“We work pretty well together.”

Goodson’s style has

rubbed off on Vicker.

“Just the way he wrestles — he wrestles hard,” Vicker said. “You learn from it. It makes you better.”

While having certain partners in the room has been nice, Creston/Orient-Macksburg coach Darrell Frain is not afraid to mix it up.

Doing that, has its perks, Frain Frain said.

“We’ve changed everybody. Even (Tuesday) we made (Kadon) Hulett bump up.

Everybody moved around, did something different,” Frain said.

“It makes us better. The fact that you have to move around, do different things.”

Frain was not afraid to bring in other teams. On

Wednesday, Martensdale-St. Marys, Mount Ayr and East Union’s district qualifying wrestlers came over for a workout.

“We’re changing it up a little more,” Frain said.

“Just having different bodies, switching partners — you have to react to different things. That’s the biggest thing.”

Frain wanted to go to Glenwood Wednesday for a workout, but the Rams competed in the Class 3A regional dual meet that night.

“I know a lot of people don’t like to drive that far, but for a two-hour workout, it would’ve been worth it,” Frain said. “Glenwood is who we match up with the most.”

The mission is simple for Creston/Orient-Macksburg’s wrestlers Saturday.

“It’s going to to come down to stepping up and do-

ing what we’ve got to do,” Frain said. “We’ve got a chance.”

The four-man brackets lend themselves to crazy situations occurring.

“I’ve seen it many times.

If you’ve been around wrestling, you’ve watched kids that were huge favorites and they don’t go on,” Frain said. “Hopefully we’re ready to go.”

Jumping out strong will be key for the Panthers.

“Hopefully we get on top. People change their attitudes and abilities to do things if you get behind,” Frain said.

Wrestling well will put all 11 Panthers in position to reach Wells Fargo Arena and the state tournament.

“We need to go out there and take care of ourselves and hopefully we’ll be fine,” Frain said.

Newton nets 20 as Diagonal defeats Lenox

DIAGONAL — Every hour could be Emily Newton takeover hour for Diagonal. Coach Gina Gunsolley just wishes her standout sophomore would take charge earlier in games.

Newton scored 16 points in the second half as Diagonal defeated visiting Lenox 50-29 in the Class 1A Region 8 quarterfinals. Diagonal (15-6) will face CAM (17-6) in Anita, Tuesday at 7 p.m.

CAM advanced by virtue of a 69-32 home victory over Orient-Macksburg Thursday.

“She needs to start out that way at the beginning of the game,” Gunsolley said. “We’ve talked about that. Not waiting until the second half.

Not waiting until the second quarter. First quarter, those post players, not just Emily, need to be getting the ball, telling them to get the ball. Then that opens it up for the guards.”

After exchanging blows with the Tigers in the early going, Diagonal’s Allison Norris made

some critical buckets in the second quarter, scoring the Maroonettes’ last six points of the half as Diagonal led 18-12 going into the locker room.

Newton scored the first bucket of the second half. Cassidy Becker scored on a follow-up of a missed shot, and Kasydi Klommhaus hit a shot in the lane that bounced high off the rim and slipped through the net for a 12-point Diagonal lead.

Lenox began inching back in the fourth when starters Jacy Stoaks, Katelyn Belding and Halee Wallace were inserted back into the game after battling some foul trouble.

But Newton was ruthless in the end, scoring on numerous drives to the bucket as she exuded a calm and collected manner.

Back on the mat, hungry for more ■ McMillin returns, two wins from state

SHENANDOAH — Bedford/Lenox senior Sam McMillin had been a part of the wrestling program his

freshman and sophomore seasons.

His junior year, he decided to pursue basketball instead.

But deep down, a passion for wrestling was yearning.

He wanted to come back this year.

First, he needed the approval of coach Derek Weller and the team.

Once the team said yes, Weller gave McMillin a list of tasks to complete before he could be back on the mat, such as conditioning workouts.

McMillin completed those effectively.

Now he stands two wins away from the state tournament.

McMillin and teammates Jared Hensley and Drew Venteicher will look to punch tickets to next week’s state tournament Saturday in the Class 2A District 3 Tournament.

Wrestling starts at noon in Harlan.

McMillin lost, then rediscovered his passion for wrestling.

“I just didn’t like it. I hadn’t been wrestling very good, I didn’t like it,” McMillin said. “Then I quit basketball. I didn’t want to regret not wrestling.”

It was Hensley who approached Weller about McMillin rejoining the team.

This was after Weller had tried with no success to have McMillin on the team “We tried and tried and tried and tried to get him to come out before wrestling season began,” Weller said. “He said no, he was going out for basketball.”

“Jared had been talking to him,” Weller said. “I don’t know what happened there. He talked to Jared and Jared came and talked to me.”

The coaching staff discussed among themselves. They let the team vote on McMillin returning.

The team voted yes.

“We decided it was OK under certain conditions and if the team was OK then we were OK with it. The team voted on it and it was what it was,” Weller said.

Once that was completed, McMil-

lin had a checklist from Weller to accomplish.

“I told him he had to put in just as much time before he got to wrestle as everyone else did,” Weller said.

McMillin return to the mat after Christmas break.

He started out well, winning 13 straight matches.

Conditioning was not easy at first.

“The first couple of weeks was a lot of conditioning,” McMillin said.

“It was a lot different than basketball.”

Once McMillin started wrestling again, the feeling on the mat came back. Moves that he did in the past returned to him.

“Once I got back into a rhythm, it came back to me,” McMillin said.

Missing a season-plus stuck with McMillin.

“At times, I wish I wouldn’t have quit, wish I would’ve stuck it out,” McMillin said.

He’s back though, wrestling at a high level.

“I just keep continuing to grow,” McMillin said. “I’ll come back (Saturday) and hopefully on to state.”

McMillin’s natural athleticism has shined.

“He’s very talented, strong, quick.

His technique is very good,” Weller said.

Saturday has the potential to be a big day for McMillin.

“We’re excited to see what happens (Saturday), see where he goes,” Weller said.

PANTHER GIRLS BASKETBALL Solid segments lead Creston to road win ■ Panthers open tournament trail Saturday at Red Oak

CLARINDA — Creston’s girls basketball team clicked on all cylinders in a pair of quarters during Thursday’s regular season finale at Clarinda.

The Panthers had enough to overcome moments of rough play, downing the Cardinals 47-34 in Hawkeye 10 Conference play.

Creston outscored Clarinda 18-10 in the first quarter.

While Clarinda scored 11 to Creston’s eight in the second quarter, cutting the Panthers lead to 26-21 at halftime, Creston responded with a dominant third quarter. The Panthers outscored the Cardinals 19-7

and took a 45-28 lead into the fourth quarter.

Neither offense found much success in the fourth quarter as the Cardinals outscored the Panthers 6-2.

“We were great in the first quarter and equally not so great in the second and fourth quarters,” said Creston coach Ryan McKim. When Creston was clicking, all areas were working.

“We played pretty good defense. We got out in transition,” McKim said. “When we were in the half court, we moved the ball. We got some open looks.”

Keeping that going will be important in Saturday’s Class 3A Region 2 opener at Red Oak. “When we’re at our best, we’re playing defense and rebounding, getting out and running and getting easy buckets in transition,” McKim said.

Brielle Baker led the Panthers with 17 points, includ-

ing four three-point baskets.

Saige Rice had nine points, all coming from downtown, along with seven assists.

Lexie Little had five points and 12 rebounds, all while defending Clarinda’s top play- Little er, Maddie Hartley.

“She was great,” McKim said. “She keeps getting better and better. If we had an MVP tonight I’d give it to Lexie Little.”

Cayla Maitlen and Kesia Stewart each added five points.

UP NEXT — Creston (9-11, 3-7) now begins the tournament trail against Red Oak (17-4, 8-2) Saturday. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. at Red Oak High School.

Friday will be the most important practice of the

season.

“We’ve got to get focused in, understand what the plan is and be ready to go for it,” McKim said.

Red Oak swept the season series, winning 54-46 in Creston and 39-17 in Red Oak on Feb. 3.

The Panthers know what needs to change.

“It will not be anything different than what we emphasizing all year,” McKim said. “We need to play good defense. Rebounding is critical. We’ve got to guard them, rebound. Offensively, we need to take care of the ball, be in control and good things will happen.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL Offense picks up for Murray girls in tournament win EU’s season ends at 4-18 ■

MURRAY — It was easy for Murray sophomore point guard Kayla Wookey and her teammates to become flustered early in Thursday’s Class 1A Region 7 tournament opener against East Union.

Wookey was giving her teammates the ball in positions to score, but the shots simply were not dropping for approximately the first 12 minutes.

Wookey kept giving her teammates the ball.

Eventually the shots started dropping consistently as the Lady Mustangs rolled to a 52-33 win.

Murray (18-5) hosts Bluegrass Conference rival Lamoni Tuesday in a quarterfinal round matchup. The Demons (15-6) advanced with a 43-27 win over Southeast Warren.

Tip on Tuesday is set for 7 p.m. in Murray.

Murray’s missed opportunities cost it an opportunity to take control early. The score was tied at 9-9 after one quarter.

“It’s very frustrating, especially if you’re the one passing them the ball and then you’re trying to rebound,” Wookey said.

“Things don’t work your way.”

While the shots weren’t falling for the Lady Mustangs, they were being fouled on them. East Union reached the 10-foul mark

early in the second quarter.

Several key Eagle contributors were forced to the bench with multiple fouls.

“We still missed a lot of bunny shots inside,” said Murray coach Jerry Shields.

“The good thing about it was they were fouling us a lot. It helped us get to the free throw line.”

Murray was 13-of-20 at the line in the opening half.

“I still say we need to get better, but 65 percent isn’t bad,” Shields said.

East Union’s defense was stymieing Murray’s offense well.

“Our defense has been there for most of the year,” said East Union coach Mike Cooley.

The Eagles could not generate enough offense consistently.

East Union had a 13-11 lead early in the second quarter, but Murray outscored them 12-0 to end the half to lead 23-13 at halftime.

“If we could shoot — shooting’s been our big bugaboo all year,” Cooley said.

The Eagles have one task between now and the start of next season, Cooley noted.

“We’re going to be in the gym all summer shooting,” Cooley said. “Hopefully the outcomes will be a little different in some of these games where we play so hard.”

Wookey and the Murray offense steadily picked apart East Union’s defense in the second half. Backdoor cuts to the basket led to numerous open looks the Lady Mustangs were able to

capitalize on.

“Their 2-3 (zone) was up higher,” Wookey said.

“More back door cuts were easier to score on. That’s how we got our scoring going. We had more passes down low. We were hitting more shots down low.”

East Union’s defense had to go away from the 2-3 and more to a man because of the fouls.

“They started getting the back door. I could see it, but I couldn’t get the kids to see it,” Cooley said. “Especially with not wanting to foul out, it was pretty hard to control them. Jerry (Shields) does a nice job with them.”

Murray’s basketball savvy showed in extending the lead to 38-21 after three quarters.

“Their girls have played a lot more basketball than our girls,” Cooley said.

Katie Otto had 18 points, nine rebounds, six steals and four assists to lead Murray.

Brandi Gilbert had nine points and seven rebounds.

Wookey had seven points, nine rebounds and four assists. Bre Klein added seven points.

Callie Gossman had nine points to lead East Union.

Sidney McFee and Olivia Eckels each had eight points.

East Union’s season ends at 4-18. The Eagles bid farewell to two seniors: Ashley Malone and Mara Weis.

“Our two seniors will be missed,” Cooley said. “They were a big part of what they did this year.”

This year’s seniors will hopefully be able to look at the program with pride in the years to come.

“I told the seniors to remember that you were a part of the change when things started turning the other way,” Cooley said.

Cooley noted the team’s effort could not be questioned this season.

“They give 110 percent all the time. I’m proud of them,” Cooley said. “As far as being committed, the top 10-12 have been there every time I’ve asked them. They were at shootarounds on morning’s of game days.”

For the returnees, the Eagles have work to do.

“They’re multiple sport athletes. They’ll do track,” Cooley said. “This summer, we’ll do some morning stuff, see what happens.”

Murray now has its fourth meeting of the season with Lamoni.

The Lady Mustangs won 48-39 on Nov. 29 in Lamoni.

Murray won 55-30 in Murray on Jan. 6 in Murray. The Lady Mustangs won 42-29 in the Bluegrass Conference Tournament quarterfinals at Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny.

Shields expects the Demons’ best effort.

“They’re going to come up here looking for blood,” Shields said. “They’re going to be wanting a victory pretty bad.”

their final home game, then got to spin the victory bell so that the loud gong rang out through the cold Ringgold County night.

“It just feels great to me,” Haidsiak said. “Our freshmen year we just started out with six (players) and it was a struggle for us so our senior year having a winning season feels pretty good.”

It was a good feeling for Gunsolley to reflect upon as well.

“We’ve talked multiple times with where we’ve started with them of having a team of six and having those guys having started as freshmen,” Gunsolley said. “They battled and got their butts kicked for several games for the first two years.”

“Now it’s fun to watch their confidence and get the success that they’ve had this year.”

The 15 wins that Diagonal has this season is a number that instills pride throughout the roster, and out beyond the confines of Diagonal’s gym. Working over the years, and the summer leading into this season has paid big dividends.

“It’s great to represent the town of Diagonal,” Becker said. “We’re so proud of our school because we’re so small and we’re so much like a family. It’s an amazing feeling.”

The feeling was bittersweet for Lenox’s two seniors, who were pulled to the applause of the Lenox faithful late in the fourth quarter, emotion weighing on the faces of both.

“It started off rough (with a loss to Clarinda). We got better and we just improved the whole season,” Jacy Stoaks said.

Stoaks will jump right into track and field for the spring.

Hannah Mitchell, who played her last two games with a mask to protect what was believed to be a broken nose, recalled fondly the times she has shared with her teammates.

“Been through a lot,” Mitchell said. “Before every game, we always go to someone’s house and eat supper and watch a movie or something like that.”

She is optimistic about what the future holds for this young team, its relatively new coaching staff, and for the impact she leaves.

“It takes a lot of leadership,” Mitchell said. “The seniors I had when I was a freshman taught me leadership skills. It’s always nice to have a good leader out there so I just try my best.”

Lenox’s season ends at 3-19.

“The whole team was tough all year. injuries, they just played through everything,” Lenox coach Clay Arnold said. “They got better every day and they did everything I asked. Made my job easy, just wish we could have gotten a few more wins.”

The Tigers were already thinking about upcoming open gym sessions after the game.

“There’s a lot of girls that got better all year,” Nelson said. “I only suited 10 to start the year. Beginning of the year I was playing six or seven. They’re all 10 playing now and they’re playing good. It’s exciting for the future.”

CLUB NEWS Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, at the Windrow meeting room with 21 members and two guests. President Chris Eaton presided, Lori Harvey gave the prayer and Jim Morris was the finemaster.

The program was given by Skip Kenyon and Kim Baker from Iowa State Savings Bank. They discussed setting up trust accounts at the bank and the many types

and functions of trusts. ISSB can even be the executor or trustee for families.

The annual pancake day for Kiwanis will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 14 at Creston First United Methodist Church, on the corner of North Elm and West Howard streets. The club members will be doing all the cooking of the regular and blueberry pancakes once again.

Chapter LG P.E.O. met Feb. 7 at the home of Jennifer Hoyt with Alice Bowers assisting as co-hostess. Thirteen members responded to roll call.

The new slate of officers was presented by the nominating committee and was voted upon favorably. Annette Rice reported on the progress of plans for the annual P.E.O. omelet buffet to be held Tuesday, March 7, at Creston First United

Methodist Church. Ticket sales will begin and can be purchased in advance from any member of Chapter AZ or LG. The scholarship committee was pleased to announce that Courtney Dake has received a scholarship from P.E.O. International Scholarship Fund in the amount of $1,800. She is attending Garrett Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois.
