Ethan Westphal’s path to become the area’s first major league baseball player since Orient’s Dazzy Vance (1915 to 1935) has taken him to Scottsdale, Arizona, after a pit stop at his alma mater. Westphal, ace of Central Missouri University’s Division II World Series team last spring, got a mid-summer call from the Colorado Rockies organization last year and pitched 33 innings for the Grand Junction (Colorado) Rockies as a long reliever. His first spring training appearance begins March 3 at the Rockies complex in Scottsdale. From there, he’ll get his 2017 minor league assignment. “I really don’t know where they’ll send me. It depends on how I do down there (in spring training),” said the 24-year-old son of Steve and Joyce Westphal of Winterset.
SWCC appearance Last Friday, the former SWCC all-region pitcher joined one of coach Pedro Hernandez’s practices to pitch a simulated game against the current Spartans. In 2015, Westphal was the Spartans’ top pitcher in a run to the regional finals, where they were defeated by NIACC.
Former SWCC pitcher Ethan Westphal pitches a simulated game against current Spartan players in the Southwestern gym before leaving for spring training in Arizona.
“He definitely controls his arsenal more now,” Hernandez said. “He knows what he’s doing and he has a good feel for all of his pitches now. He was really good for us, but now he locates way better.” A couple of Spartan hitters shook their head and smiled after being “frozen” by one of Westphal’s patented sidearm sliders that start out coming straight at a righthanded batter’s torso before curving above the edge of the plate. And, that was with Westphal tipping off the batter and catcher what was coming. “I wanted that for our guys,” Hernandez said. “For them to have the opportunity to face a pro guy is great. It’s an eye opener.

DES MOINES (AP) — Some of Iowa’s most-populated counties said Thursday they will not quietly accept minimum wage legislation that could result in tens of thousands of workers in the state receiving pay cuts. The House Local Government Committee approved the bill along party lines. It would ban Iowa’s counties and cities from increasing their local minimum hourly wages above the state standard of $7.25 and cancel higher wages already ap-

We have some guys with the talent to play at a high level, and now they see what it takes. We had some guys hit him, and that’s something to use for confidence. But, he was telling them what was coming. To them, I say what’s going to happen when he doesn’t tell you? That’s the level you have to be at to hit a pro guy.” Ethan and his father began their drive to Scottsdale later Friday after the workout, with Steve spending the weekend in Arizona. Ethan said he appreciated the chance to get a good outing in before getting to the Rockies facility. “It was nice of these guys

Westphal, who pitched for a Lenox state runner-up team before his dad retired as Lenox coach, also pitched for state championship teams at Martensdale-St. Marys with a 48-1 high school record. He finally began his SWCC career after surgeries on his back and elbow. Last year was only his second healthy season after Tommy John surgery on his elbow. “He’s finally healthy, and that’s really helped him develop as a pitcher,” said Kenny Namanny, Southwestern pitching coach. Hernandez was impressed with Westphal’s command in his 66-pitch outing against Spartan hitters in the indoor batting cage a week ago.
firefighters arrived at the home to find it engulfed in smoke and fire. Fire crews entered the home and recovered the bodies of Linda and Robert.
