According to Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Nathan Ludwig, the bodies of Lauren Barker, 16, Elania Critz, 16, and Jesse Robinson, 19, were found in a car lodged in a deep ravine off

Greater Regional Medical Center has managed to pay off a portion of the debt it’s accrued since 2011, and plans to pay off the entirety of it by 2026. Matt McCutchan, GRMC chief financial officer, said the hospital is refinancing the debt service in order to prevent higher interest rates and cut five years off the payment plan. “Interest rates are really low right now, and they’re forecast to rise for the foreseeable future,” McCutchan said. “So, we’re trying to get things refinanced as quickly as possible so we can reduce the McCutchan interest on our outstanding debt right now.” McCutchan clarified the hospital administration is not issuing any new debt at this time, and a current construction project will be paid for with existing funds. As of fiscal year (FY) 2016, the hospital had $14.2 million in debt compared to

By refinancing the debt, it allows the hospital to cut five years off the total repayment plan and decrease interest to be paid by about $1 million. “Debt costs money to service. Although ‘good’ debt can be used to generate a positive return, it can also increase risk in the event of a downturn. We believe that keeping our debt at reasonable levels is important to taxpayers because it allows us to keep total expenses, and our total tax asking, low,” said Monte Neitzel, GRMC chief executive officer. Administration also plans to maintain the tax asking at $2.34 per $1,000 in valuation, which equals to about $1.1 million per year. “I think Monte is very GRMC | 2A

Branstad’s move to China means Iowa’s first female governor DES MOINES (AP) — The likely departure of the nation’s longest-serving governor to accept an appointment as U.S. ambassador to China means Iowa could soon be led by its first female governor, just as the state shifts to full Republican control of its Legislature. An aide to President-elect Donald Trump confirmed Wednesday that he’d offered to nominate Gov. Terry Branstad as China am-

bassador, and that Branstad was expected to accept. If Branstad accepts and is confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Republican Lt. Branstad Gov. Kim Reynolds
