Religious artifacts found in ashes of Loras College building DUBUQUE (AP) — Maintenance workers cleaning up a Loras College building that was devastated by a fire have found a box filled with religious items dating back more than 50 years. The north building of the Visitation Complex caught fire in March after being struck by lightning, the Telegraph Herald reported. No one was injured in the massive blaze, but the building that is more than 126 years old was deemed a total loss
and is slated for demolition. Loras maintenance workers recently retrieved the cross that long adorned the complex. In it, they found a small copper box filled with religious statuettes, prayer cards, medallions, a rosary and a prayer to St. Agatha to specifically protect the building from burning. Loras Center for Dubuque History archivist Michael Gibson said the prayer was “prophetic.” He said the

“CHEAT MEALS?” Pizza and donuts when I’m dieting. It’s crazy because in off-season, I don’t even crave pizza or donuts.

WEST DES MOINES — Former University of Iowa football teammates Dallas Clark and Kyle McCann have hooked up again 15 years later in a nonprofit venture designed as “Iowans Helping Iowans.” McCann, formerly a shareholding attorney with B r i c k G e n try P.C. of Des Moines, had served McCann as a legal consultant for Clark’s nonprofit venture, The Native Fund, before becoming its fulltime executive director 10 months ago. Clark, an NFL tight end for 11 seasons, created The Native Fund as a nonprofit organization to help Iowans coping with natural disasters, with additional longrange plans of assisting Iowa youths and recent military veterans. The nonprofit’s first large-scale fundraiser was a concert held where Clark and McCann played their home football games as Hawkeyes. The Aug. 27 concert was headlined by country music star Blake Shelton. Also appearing was country musician Tucker Beathard,
brother of current Hawkeye quarterback C.J. Beathard. Clark began working on his idea for such a venture in 2008, when a powerful tornado leveled the town of Parkersburg and floodwaters filled more than 10 square miles of Cedar Rapids and damaged much of the University of Iowa campus in Iowa City. Growing up in Livermore in northwest Iowa, he knew there was a spirit among Iowans of helping each other in a crisis. Clark and actor Ashton Kutcher, also an Iowa native, joined in a partnership to launch The Native Fund. “My hope is that The Native Fund will provide an avenue for Iowans, both near and far, to directly help Iowans in their times of need,” Clark stated on the organization’s website, www.thenativefund.org. When Clark retired from the NFL, he focused on the effort to raise funds and organize resources to assist Iowans in times of need. Programs and financial assistance are also planned for Iowa’s post-9/11 military veterans and Iowa children afflicted with life-threatening illness or disease. As the scope of the organization’s outreach grew and details of the concert as its first big event unfolded, Clark turned to his former quarterback for full-time assistance. “I was working at Brick Gentry and worked closely with them as legal counsel for a period of time,” said McCann, an all-state quarterback, state tournament

A high-scoring basketball team that captured the hearts of an entire community will be honored when Red Oak visits Creston for a varsity doubleheader Saturday, Jan. 7. Creston’s 1997 boys basketball state championship team will be recognized at halftime of the 5 p.m. boys game on the 20th anniversary of their incredible run through the Class 3A competition at Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Also at that time, the 1996-97 Panthers will be the first basketball team to be inducted into the KMA Sports Hall of Fame. Derek Martin of the southwest Iowa radio station based in Shenandoah will lead the induction ceremony. Fans are asked to wear red for a “Red Out” promotion for three local games that day — the Creston-Red Oak girls game at 3:30 p.m., the boys game that follows and a showdown of nationally ranked men’s teams when Southwestern hosts Indian Hills for the first time in 15 years in a 7 p.m. tipoff. “Indian Hills is a pretty big game for SWCC, too, so we’re trying to get as many people involved that night as possible in both venues,” said Taylor Phipps, Creston boys basketball coach. “Last summer we as a staff realized it was 20 years ago that Creston won the championship. So, it’s kind of a special anniversary. We wanted to honor that team as part of the tradition of Creston basketball.” The varsity squad that year consisted of Conor Reed, Ben Gerleman, Jeff Finn, Kyle McCann, Eric Owens,
