MOUNT AYR – A new restaurant has opened in Mount Ayr with a style of cuisine stemming from co-owner Mark Roybal’s roots: New Mexico. After spending much of his life in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and later building a career in plumbing and electrical work, including working in Leon, Roybal and his family moved back to Mount Ayr, where his wife, Amy, is from. The couple opened Santa Fe Cafe last week at 115 N. Taylor St. in Mount Ayr. “I love to cook. I watched my mom and grandma cook as a young child,” said Roybal, 41. “I, myself, have been cooking since I was a teenager. No training or anything like that, just watching Mom and Grandma.” The location was previously a breakfast-only restaurant called The Early Bird, owned and run by Jamie

Obama grants commutations for 2 Iowa men in drug cases DES MOINES (AP) — Two Iowa men will serve shorter prison terms after President Barack Obama commuted their sentences. The names of Anthony Dodd, of Davenport, and Aaron Rees, of Pleasantville, were on a list of those who received the commutations Monday. Both men’s life sentences were shortened to 20 years. The Des Moines Register reports Rees was sentenced

in 2005 following his convictions on conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine and using a minor to manufacture meth. Dodd was convicted of conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine and received his sentence in 2006. White House officials say Obama has shortened the sentences of 1,176 people during his presidency, including 395 serving life sentences.

State report says slaying suspect competent to stand trial DUBUQUE (AP) — A report from state experts says a man charged with sexually assaulting and killing a woman in Dubuque is competent to stand trial. Helmon Betwell has been under treatment at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville since August. In June a judge declared Betwell was incompetent and ordered him to undergo treatment. Betwell has pleaded not

guilty to charges of first-degree murder, sexual abuse and burglary. Prosecutors say he attacked 66-year-old Nancy Krapfl on Sept. 1 last year as she was walking in Dubuque. A Betwell attorney said at a hearing Monday that the defense team is arranging an independent competency evaluation for January. The judge said she’ll set a hearing on whether to resume criminal proceedings after she receives the defense expert’s report.
