Recently, the Union County Law Enforcement Center became host to a permanent medication drop box. The box, a white container that looks similar to a mailbox, was installed about a week ago in the front lobby to the left as you walk in the second set of doors and was purchased through a Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy grant for about $900. In the state of Iowa, the average number of painkiller prescriptions per 100 people are between 72 and 82, according to 2014 statistics from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Many people become addicted to prescription drugs because they started using a family member’s leftover prescriptions,” said Paul Ver Meer, Creston Police chief. “Once addicted, some of these individuals may then eventually move to heroin to fulfill that addiction.” The most common types of medications to be abused include opioids or pain relievers such as Vicodin and

Union County Law Enforcement Center is now hosting a drug drop box, labeled with the words “Iowa Take Back Prescription Drug Drop Box,” to help prevent prescription drug and heroin abuse. Previously, the closest drop boxes were located in Cass, Decatur, Page and Warren counties.

working for his dad. He was about 19 years old then, and he has worked for his dad full-time for 17 years. Grant said working with his dad over the years gives him confidence taking on his new role. While the business end of contracting homes will be new for him, he looks forward to the new opportunity. “It’s an exciting challenge,” he said.
