More than 20 students and staff from area high schools participated in a Southwestern Community College tour of Cardinal Glass in Greenfield and Ferrara Candy Company in Creston. The event showcased the dire need to replace an aging, skilled workforce and diminish any negative connotations commonly associated with construction and electrical work. “I just think it’s a good opportunity for educating the kids,” said Southwest Valley Industrial Technology Instructor Tracy King. “I think that it is the way to go for the future. There is a great need for these jobs in the area, and the kids are interested in it, so it would be a waste not to bring them over.” S W C C Career and Technical Recruiter Bill Huntington led the tour. The event was a Huntington prelude to a workforce summit in Osceola Tuesday at Lakeside Casino, which includes keynote speaker and gold medalist wrestler Dan Gable. “I was thoroughly impressed with the sophistication of the automation of the machines at Cardinal Glass and Ferrara Candy Company,” Huntington said. “These are highly technical and professional jobs, and they are hurting for

Southwestern Community College will be part of the second annual southwest Iowa workforce summit “Where are the Skilled Workers?” at Lakeside Casino in Osceola. The conference is scheduled 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday. The event’s keynote speaker is Olympic gold medalist wrestler Dan Gable. His presentation — Believe, Gable Style! — focuses on hard work, focus, commitment and dedication.

A Creston man was charged Wednesday with attempted murder and going armed with intent Wednesday stemming from an incident earlier this week in Adams County. Peter James Wiley, 32, 908 W. Adair St., Creston, allegedly shot at a woman’s vehicle in Casey’s General Store in Corning Tuesday then took off in an unknown direction. The woman reported this to law enforcement. Law enforcement in Adams County immediately broadcasted information about Wiley and at about Wiley 5:15 Wednesday morning This man Creston Police Sgt. Eric allegedly Shawler identified Wiley’s shot at a woman at vehicle in Creston. Casey’s in Shawler pursued Wiley Corning until Wiley’s car slid into a ditch on 160th Street west of Creston city limits. As Shawler approached the car, it caught fire rapidly. “The driver got out (of the vehicle) and took off on foot while (he was) partially on fire,” Creston Police Chief Paul Ver Meer told the Creston News Advertiser.

Christmas Basket Fund works toward $19,000 goal The 2013 Union County Christmas Basket Fund is underway. Donations totaling $13,193.05 have been received to date. This year’s fund goal is $19,000 and organizers are gearing up for another successful campaign. Last year, 219 baskets serving 854 people and nursing home baskets were distributed. Residents of care centers in Creston and Afton received fruit and Kleenex. Baskets include meat, canned goods donated through efforts of
Boy Scouts and school and community projects and certificates redeemable at local supermarkets for perishable foods. Each child 18 and younger will also receive a gift certificate for clothing items. The Christmas Basket Fund board is assisted in packing and distributing baskets by local service club volunteers, Boy Scouts and FFA students from Creston Schools.
