AFTON — The city of Afton plans to upgrade its century-old sidewalk system next spring, thanks to a $10,000 Wellmark Foundation grant it received in mid-November. The grant will cover about half of an estimated $20,000 project to replace damaged or missing pieces of sidewalk on a six-block portion of East Filmore Street. When finished, the sidewalk will connect Highway 169 to the walking trail on the east side of town. Toni L a n d - Landers ers, Afton city clerk, said these particular walkways are badly in need of repair. “There’s some spots where there’s bad cracks and some spots where they’re heaved and some spots where there’s no sidewalk at all,” Landers said. “We just wanted to make that main route safe to the trail.” The Wellmark Foundation’s Community Kickstarter grant funds projects that make communities healthier by encouraging activity or access to healthy food. To receive the money, the city was required to submit an application and then vote during a twoweek voting period, which ended Oct. 7. As part of the application, the city produced a video showing the disrepair of Afton’s sidewalk system and outlining its project. According to the video, the name “J.W. Carter,” which is inscribed in several cement blocks throughout the town, belongs to a man who died in 1914, proving many of the city’s sidewalks are more than 100 years old. Communities around Iowa entered more than 130 projects in the competition. Afton was one of 32 projects selected. This project isn’t the first step Afton has taken to

repair its sidewalk system. For the past two years, the city has offered up to $500 each to residents citywide to put toward repairs of their own sidewalks. This funding had come from local option sales tax money. However, no one has taken the city up on the offer so far. Afton City Council member Mary Hill said that even though maintaining sidewalks is the homeowner’s responsibility, the city is interested in doing what it can to aid them in the process.

bers have already offered to pitch in to rip out their current sidewalks. Hill said cost estimates right now are around $20,000, and the council will further discuss the project and possible additional funding sources at its December meeting.
