MORE ABOUT HIM

“I think he represents all that is good about our community.” That’s how Creston Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Ellen Gerharz described Roger Lanning, who has donated his time and energy to several community functions and organizations over the years. Lanning, a consumer real estate loan officer for Iowa State Savings Bank, said it himself – he never set out to be a community leader. And yet, here he is. Lanning will be recognized as Creston’s Citizen of the Year during the Creston Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Meeting 6 p.m. Thursday at Supertel Inn and Conference Center. “I would say surprised and humbled, I guess. I certainly wasn’t expecting it,” Lanning said about receiving the award. “Obviously, it’s an honor. I feel, I guess, a little

I’m not sure what I’ve done to deserve it. If it’s Balloon Days, the reason I do Balloon Days is I love hot air balloons and I love the event. But, what makes it doable is we have so many great volunteers on the committee.” In fact, Lanning’s work as chairperson of the Southwest Iowa Hot Air Balloon Days for the past 11 years played a key role in him receiving the award. In addition to being the figurehead for Balloon Days for

the past 11 years, Lanning is also involved with the airport commission, the airport zoning board and Creston Kiwanis Club, of which he is a past president and board member. He is also a past president and member of the Creston Chamber of Commerce board and has served as both a deacon and elder for First Presbyterian Church in Creston. “I never set out to be somebody that necessarily was real LANNING | 2A

If you were lucky enough to catch the fifth-annual KSIB Tractor Ride this past June, leading the pack was Creston’s Volunteer of the Year, Richard Wenzig. “He has always been willing to help us out from the inception of the KSIB Tractor Ride,” said KSIB General Manager Chad Rieck. “He goes out with my father, Dave, and together they determine the route to make sure it is safe.” Wenzig, 69, has traveled the nation with his antique tractors in various competitions and rides. He wanted to bring that atmosphere to Creston and show his friends and fellow tractor riders the beauty and hospitality of southwest Iowa. “I got ahold of Dave Rieck and I said, ‘Why doesn’t KSIB put on a tractor ride?’” Wenzig said. “He said I was going to have to be the ramrod because he didn’t know how to get one started.” Wenzig’s main stipulation

was to keep the ride free for the participants so they could enjoy the camaraderie of the event. In the first year, Wenzig said they had 157 tractors and the event has grown to more than 300. His focus is on the community, helping older generations reminisce about their youth and helping youth understand the blood, sweat and pride that went into the tractors that helped shape the place we call home. When the call came that his name was proposed as Creston’s Volunteer of the Year, Wenzig didn’t see it coming. “I was kind of shocked; I guess it caught me off guard more than anything,” Wenzig said. “I’ve always been energetic in helping people and making things happen.”

McKinley Park After his time in the service, Wenzig started working in construction and eventually started his own business which he still runs today, Wenzig Construction. He mainly focuses on soil conservation work and building ponds and terraces. Wenzig has donated his time and equipment to mul-

tiple projects around McKinley Park. He helped level the pad for the shelter house and parking lot at Taylor Park. He also helped clean up the wooded area directly behind the Girl Scout cabin at McKinley Park. “This year, the committee decided on Richard because of all the work he has done out at the park,” Creston Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Ellen Gerharz said. “A lot of people don’t know the magnitude of the time and effort he has put in out there.” Wenzig’s clearing work at McKinley Park created enough space to put in a track to improve Creston’s antique tractor pull during the Fourth of July celebration. The permanent track has added to the appeal for sponsors to contribute to the event, making it more inviting for the competitors as they compete for prize money. “He single-handedly took an area that couldn’t be used and turned it into a nice spot for the Fourth of July event,” said John Kawa, Creston WENZIG | 2A

‘Respect and provide a service to others’

For Rachel Shepherd, providing a service comes naturally. Shepherd, who won Creston Chamber of Commerce Youth of the Year award, is an active volunteer in school and outside. “My whole family is that way, and it’s shown me to give back and provide for others,” Shepherd said. “Even with coaches and teachers, they show how they’re helping others and providing a service and I want to pass that on to others.” Shepherd, 18, is a senior at Creston Community High School. She runs cross country and track and is a member of

America (FBLA). She is also a member of Crest Baptist Church, where she participates in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Crest Baptist youth group. Shepherd received a call last week from Ellen Gerharz, director of Creston Chamber of Commerce, who told Shepherd she received the award. “I didn’t think that of all people that I would be the first person they would nominate,” Shepherd said. “I was really honored that I was the person they would nominate.”

Volunteering Shepherd volunteers in FBLA, which is a school organization that teaches students to be leaders. Her favorite organization to work with was Ronald McDonald House, a

And, from the start in FBLA, she was highly active.” The first year Shepherd became an officer, her sophomore year, she was the youngest officer the Creston chapter had ever had up to that point. “She was very active, and then she got that experience leading people,” Smith said.

She was not the lead in the organizing committee, but she helped organize the event from its infancy to well after it occurred. “It showed me more of what I’m helping and how many people I didn’t know that were helped by Ronald McDonald,” Shepherd said of talking to those from the Creston area who had first-hand experience with the charity. “We reached out to our community and we could show everyone in our community how SHEPHERD | 2A
