Editor’s note: This story is the second in a series of features on local residents’ fitness transformations. When someone overcomes a life-dominating struggle, others want to know how it happened. Cassie Wilmeth was at work when a co-worker noticed she had lost significant weight. “Did you get that surgery?” Wilmeth remembers her asking. Her co-worker was asking the “how” question before Wilmeth herself had noticed any changes. And, after three years and losing more than 200 pounds, Wilmeth still does not know the science behind her success. Some take a picture before they begin working out. Others weigh themselves daily, make charts and inform all their

er really had a plan to begin with. A friend from work invited her to do workout videos over the weekend, and she agreed. “I thought this might be fun,” Wilmeth said. Once she started seeing results for herself, she decided to keep at it. Then, soon enough, she started adding walks to her weekdays and turning on her home TV to do other video workouts. Fitness was on Wilmeth’s mind for a long time. “I thought about losing weight a lot over the years,” Wilmeth said. “I told myself, ‘It would be great if I could lose weight’.” The temporary mulllings never turned into a decisive moment of resolve or action for her, and there was no moment she considered her weight gain as a life-dominating struggle or called it a disorder.

“I don’t remember looking back and thinking I have a problem,” she said. “I wasn’t thinking, ‘Oh, I’m eating too much’.” In a way, the science behind her weight loss was as mysterious to her as her weigh gain. Wilmeth, 31, was raised in Creston, where she lives with her parents and two younger sisters. Talks of fitness trickled into her days as her dad cut soda out of his diet and started walking on the treadmill to lose what would be around 50 pounds. Her mom also lost weight, and her younger sisters have dabbled in workouts here and there. Growing up, her family made walks a family outing. She also was relatively active as a child, playing volleyball and softball in middle school and taking the occasional trip to the gym in college. “It just all happened gradually,” she said.

Christmas cheer will be back in full force Thursday as the 15th-annual “There’s No Place Like Creston for the Holidays” celebration begins. This year’s celebration takes place Thursday through Sunday and again Dec. 10-11. “That’s one nice thing about the event is it kind of adds to the atmosphere of the holidays,” said Ellen Gerharz, Creston Chamber of Comm e r c e executive Gerharz

director. “After the Thanksgiving holiday and all the shopping, it hopefully gets everybody more in the holiday spirit. It’s a fun event.” The event kicks off with the Comfort and Joy Quilt Show at Quilts & Other Notions Creative Center, located at 201 N. Elm St. in Creston, and the Festival of Trees at American Home Design Center, located at 101 N. Walnut St. Both events begin 9 a.m. Thursday. People have the opportunity to bid on trees, wreaths, centerpieces and other items decorated and donated by various individuals and groups in the community at Festival of Trees. Proceeds from Festival of Trees go toward assisting HOLIDAYS | 2A

CASSIE WILMETH Creston

Wilmeth remembers she would be sitting at home watching TV, and she would think, “I’m hungry. Maybe I’ll go eat.” At Greater Regional Medical Center, where she works preparing and serving food, she would finish preparing something like a batch of cookies and she would think like she did when she was at home and watching TV. “Oh, I made cookies today,” she would tell herself before she indulged in cookies and softserve icecream. “I think I was eating out WILMETH | 2A
