After a two-month hiatus, potato oles are about to be back on the menu. Creston Taco John’s will be reopening its drive-thru Friday, with a grand reopening of the restaurant’s dining room to follow within the next few weeks. The building, located at 708 S. Walnut St., is nearing the final stages of a major renovation project that began Sept. 14. Winterst-
ien Construction of Creston has been the general contractor for the Driskell project. Melissa Driskell, Winterstien’s owner, said the building, which was originally constructed in the mid-1960s, will be basically all-new when it fully reopens. “We put in a new ad-
dition on the front of the building and pretty much gutted the entire inside — basically took it down to about two existing walls,” Driskell said. “Now, we are building it back to be one of their new prototype stores.” Driskell said the store’s front is now pushed out 12 more feet, which allows for a larger dining room and relocation of the front counter. Among the other upgrades are larger restrooms, a new hood over the fryers and added freezer, cooler and dry storage
space. Bill Byrne, owner of Taco Johns of Iowa, which acquired the store a year ago, has said in a press release this new store will be “among the most technologically advanced Taco John’s restaurants in America.” The drive-thru will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday. Further hours are: Saturday: 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday: 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Egg production improves but remains below last year DES MOINES (AP) — Iowa egg farms are gradually recovering from the bird flu that destroyed 25 million of the state’s egg-laying hens this spring. The U.S. Department of Agriculture
says in a report Monday that Iowa egg production during October was 753 million eggs. That’s up 2 percent from September but down 47 percent from a year ago. Iowa, typically by far
the nation’s leading egg producer, fell behind Ohio where hens laid 18 million more eggs last month. Nationally, nearly 7.8 billion eggs were produced in October. That’s down 9 percent from a

National gas price average projected to hit $1.99 GasBuddy projects fuel prices this Thanksgiving will be the lowest since March 2009. ■
Americans hitting the road for Thanksgiving will certainly have something to be extra thankful for – the cheapest gasoline prices since March 2009. The low prices are showing up just in time for millions of motorists who are heading out and saving them $1.5 billion over the five days that GasBuddy’s recent survey found most motorists will be traveling. GasBuddy projects that by Thanksgiving Day the national average will be $1.99 per gallon, nearly 80 cents per gallon cheaper than last year and $1.29 per gallon cheaper than 2013. As prices at the pump have plunged, the number of states seeing average prices under $2 per gallon has more than tripled in the last two weeks, rising to 19 states, with nearly 60 percent of all U.S. gas stations now selling below $2 per gallon. Lower gas prices could be a reason why more people will be spending more time on the

road this holiday weekend. According to GasBuddy’s 2015 Thanksgiving travel survey, 25 percent of more than 100,000 travelers surveyed nationwide say their travel will begin on Thanksgiving Day; while nearly 30 percent say travel begins the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and another 23 percent say they’ll hit the road two to three days ahead. That’s an 11 percent decrease in the number of people who say they’re heading out on Thanksgiving Day. In 2014, 36 percent said they’d travel on Thanksgiving Day; 30 percent said they’d travel the day before; and only 18 percent said they’d hit the road two to three days earlier. “With gas prices plunging under $2 just in time for Thanksgiving Day, it’s a perfect reminder – some folks automatically expect gas prices to rise in advance of a major travel holiday,” said Patrick DeHaan, a senior petroleum analyst with GasBuddy. “That’s become a popular misconception, and this holiday exemplifies the point. November gas prices have slid significantly lower and holiday travelers will certainly be the beneficiaries.
