Sanders, Fiorina win Creston’s youth caucus Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina were the most popular candidates among Creston students at Union County’s Iowa Youth Caucus held Thursday at Creston High School. This was the first year for the free, bipartisan event,

which teaches Iowa teenagers about the importance and formats of the Iowa caucuses. The event was launched by Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate in conjunction with the state’s Democratic and Republican parties. Twenty-two counties are participating statewide,

and nearly 1,000 Iowa students have cast their votes for a Republican and Democratic candidate so far, with one county yet to vote. In Creston, 15 students voted at the event. Statewide, Sanders is the highest vote-getter overall with 52.7 percent of the Democratic vote. Retired

neurosurgeon Ben Carson leads all Republican candidates with 22.3 percent. See the infographic, right, for how Creston’s students voted, compared to statewide results and the latest nationwide Bloomberg poll. Also, see photos of the event on page 2A.

ndrew Heaton didn’t grow up working on cars or come from a family who did. His father is a banker, and people often ask Heaton why he didn’t choose that route, too. “I like getting dirty,” he said. “I hate sitting behind a desk, and I hate wearing a tie. I always said I’d never have a job where I have to wear a button-up shirt.” He looked down at his Creston Automotive shirt: a short-sleeved button-up. “OK, I failed at that part,” he said with a laugh. Heaton has a degree in automotive repair from Southwestern Community College (SWCC). He’s been an automotive technician at Creston Automotive for five years and has been trained extensively. He is committed to, and capable of, solving nearly any issue that comes through the door. But he tries not to take it all too seriously.

Andrew Heaton and Brian Andreasen, both automotive technicians at Creston Automotive, listen to a client’s concerns about his vehicle Tuesday morning.

One time, Heaton was given an estimate ticket, which is supposed to detail the issue a client is having with his or her vehicle. But the ticket just said “missing” and had no other information. “I hit the panic button on the key fob and said, ‘There it is. Tell the customer not to lose his car again,’” he said. Heaton, 25, of Corning, began the SWCC automotive program during

his senior year at Corning High School. After graduating from SWCC, he took the job at Creston Automotive, a Ford dealership. While Heaton’s education has equipped him to work on any brand of vehicle, being at a Ford dealership has brought him to prefer Fords. Plus, his ongoing training the past five years has been Ford-focused. “Just because it’s a car doesn’t mean it does

things the same way as another car,” Heaton said. “Being Ford-certified, I know how Ford does things and how to diagnose that system. If you give me a car from another company, and it does things differently, it gets confusing.” On Tuesday morning, Heaton tried to work on a car, but the part he had for it wouldn’t fit. HEATON | 2A

The 2015 Union County Christmas Basket Fund campaign is underway. This year’s fund goal is $19,000 and organizers are gearing up for another successful campaign. To date, $1,279 has been contributed. Last year, 550 baskets serving more than 1,200 people were distributed. Residents of care centers in Creston and Afton received fruit and Kleenex. Baskets include meat, canned goods donated through efforts of Boy Scouts and school and community projects and certificates redeemable at local supermarkets for perishable foods. Nominations for Union County residents will be taken until Nov. 24. Each child 18 and younger will also receive a gift certificate for clothing items. Along with providing food baskets and certificates to those in need at Christmas, monetary and food donations are used by The Christmas Basket Fund to provide assistance throughout the year. Those organizations are MATURA, Food for Life, Ministerial Alliance, open table and the food pantry. The Christmas Basket Fund board is assisted in packing and distributing baskets by the local BASKET | 2A
