U.S. Election Day hasn’t been the only one on Andrea Rivera Rojas’ mind. Her inclination to consider happenings worldwide led her to plan an event for students to discuss the way politics work in their home countries. “Elections are coming up soon, and I wanted to bring cultural awareness to our campus,” said Rivera Rojas, Southwestern C o m munity College multicultural club s p o n sor and Rivera Rojas TRIO advising coach.
Seven of the 20 multicultural club members presented to a large group of SWCC students and employees in the SWCC library Tuesday afternoon about how politics work in their home countries. Students speaking were from Puerto Rico, China, Honduras, Fiji, Dominican Republic and Venezuela. A few spoke glowingly of their home politics; others shared the dim truth of the political state of their countries.
Puerto Rico The 2016 Puerto Rico election to elect the governor of Puerto Rico is the same day as the U.S. election: Nov. 8. Incumbent Democratic Governor Alejandro García Padilla is not running for re-election to a second term in office. Governor is the highest political
position. SWCC exchange students Stephan Soto and Dylan Torres, both from Puerto Rico, talked about the political system. “There are six candidates for the governor position, and there are six Puerto Rican parties,” Soto said. “In the new Progressive party, the ones that are running are (Pedro Pierluisi and Ricky Rosselló). ... That political party was founded in 1967, and the basic idea of them is to be part of the United States as a state and to have more benefits because, now, Puerto Rico is a colony; it’s not a state.” In the older Democratic party, founded in 1938, the candidate running is David Bernier, Soto said. “The third one is the Puerto Rican Independence Party,” he said. “The one
DES MOINES (AP) — Authorities apprehended a man Wednesday suspected in the early morning killings of two Des Moines area police officers who were shot to death while sitting in their patrol cars in what authorities described as separate ambush-style attacks. Officers from the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol took 46-year-old Scott Michael Greene into custody and were taking him to Des Moines, police said. His arrest came about eight hours after the killings to two officers. Des Moines Sgt. Paul Parizek told CNN that he had few details about the circumstances of Greene’s capture, but that Greene was on foot on a roadway at the time and was alone when we
was taken into custody. Police responded to a report of shots fired at 1:06 a.m. and found an Urbandale Police Department officer who had been shot. Authorities from several agencies saturated the area after that shooting, and about 20 minutes later discovered that a Des Moines officer who had responded to the initial killing had been shot in a patrol car at an intersection, Parizek said. The shootings happened less than 2 miles apart and both took place along main streets that cut through residential areas. “There’s somebody out there shooting police officers. We hope to find him before somebody else gets hurt,” Parizek said at an early morning news conference, POLICE | 2A
that’s running is María Santiago. That political party was founded in 1946 and wants to be independent. They want Puerto Rico to be their own country. The other two (candidates) are running as independent.” Rivera Rojas, who is also from Puerto Rico, mentioned Torres will be voting absentee for Puerto Rico’s election while living in the U.S. Torres brought his ballot forms to the event to show attendees. “This year, we have good candidates that are battling,” Rivera Rojas said. “It is going to be an interesting election this year for us.”
